As a personal trainer, I typically advise against protein supplements for multiple reasons. As a human being who enjoys food, I typically advise against ingesting flavors that induce projectile vomiting.
@Lazarpandar Capitalism 101. Just like big pharma doesnt “cure” anything. They only “treat” it. Why would anyone provide a service that will end their income stream? Just look at congress. If they passed laws that were simple, made sense, weren’t full of pork and lobbyist gifts and just steaming piles of legislation, they wouldn’t need to get re-elected to fix, undo, and make more of the shit they created.
@araczynski@mike808 I am an idiot, I guess, because the best client that I can have (and one that would represent my services best) is the client I see once. Personal training as a business is as cutthroat as any, but one on one physical education is about making self sufficient and efficient people. By the way, I’m not a nutritionist, I garner no authority over what people shove into their mouths, so w/e. UGANDAN KNUCKLES GIF
@mike808 because it’s the right thing to do.
You’re very cynical if you think every personal trainer thinks this way— they’re not all the same person.
Pharma companies though, I do agree with you on.
An American military camp posted deep in the desert of the Middle East was running low on supplies, due to their “hearts and minds” efforts which were some at building support locally for the troops.
Food and medical shipments were often distributed first to the local population then to the soliders.
However last winter was a bad one with supplies running low all around, including basic foodstuffs. Finally after a few tense weeks the base commander received word that they would be getting a drop; from the nearby village. He told the watchmen to alert him immediately when they saw the visitors.
Just after 10pm local time that day, the front guard ran into the commander’s tent, shouting, “the Kurds and whey are here!”
The nutrition facts for each flavor are different, but you can’t tell which facts belong to which flavor from the pictures. Which one has the least sugar?
So it arrived. My very teenage son wanted to taste the campfire marshmallow immediately. So he proceeded to take a scoop and eat it as is. Tasty, he said. Mmmm this is really good, he said. So, I give it 5 out of 5 stars even without mixing with water.
@cengland0 WTF? People, please do not listen to this garbage. That being said, the people who can really use this product already know what they need to know.
Anyway, never tried this brand but I’m in for four pounds of each flavor. Good deal but too nervous to get more in case I don’t like it.
@cengland0 Hey, the sky is purple! Prove me wrong!
I have zero motivation to waste time proving you wrong. If people want to believe that soy is better than whey it doesn’t affect me. Their loss. And to be honest, if they don’t already know whey is better they probably aren’t someone who needs protein powder anyway, nor will they benefit from whey over soy.
People who can benefit from whey are surely using it already and sure as heck aren’t switching to soy.
@uscpsycho Your incentive is that you told people to not listen to me as if my comment was wrong. If you think it is wrong, back it up or shut up.
In the comment you replied to, I did not say soy was better than whey. I said it was a byproduct after creating cheese and it has a higher profit margin than soy. What part do you want people to not know and why are you trying to hide the truth from these nice people?
Proving wrong is exactly the wrong attitude. You should present your argument with facts and citations to back up your claim.
Look up burden of proof.
It says “it is the obligation on somebody presenting a new idea to provide evidence to support its truth. Once evidence has been presented, it is up to any opposing “side” to prove the evidence presented is not adequate.”
Basically, if you make a statement, you gotta give some proof that it is right. Then it is up to the other people to prove you wrong. You can’t just say something and expect others to prove you wrong, you have to put some effort in.
@cengland0 Young have seriously short term memory. An exact quote from you “Soy protein is better. Period.”
Presumably people here are adults. If they want to take supplement advice from someone like you (or me) on Meh they do so at their peril. Not my job to educate people here, but I do feel compelled to at least warn them you are wrong. Now if they are so inclined they can do their own due diligence. Or they can believe you. Or believe me. All at their peril if they don’t do their own research.
But again, the people who can really use this are already using whey and aren’t switching to soy. I’d be preaching to the choir.
@alphaspark You got it wrong. I made a simple comment and he acted like I was wrong. Then he should prove it. I didn’t make an extraordinary claim so that does not require extraordinary proof.
Anyway. You asked for it. Watch this video. Pay special attention to the cheese manufacturing component.
@uscpsycho Then you are the one that made the mistake. Look at the comment you replied to. I never made any claims that soy was better than whey. Perhaps if you knew how to use a computer better, you would have responded to the correct message and then there wouldn’t have been any confusion.
@cengland0 Nobody is disagreeing about where whey comes from. Where it comes from and how it benefits people have nothing to do with each other.
But you definitely said “Soy protein is better. Period.” I’m one of the very first posts if this thread. Anyone can see it. Perhaps the soy protein is adversely affecting your brain.
@uscpsycho like I said previously, respond to the correct damn message so you don’t look like a fool because, by responding to my second message, you made it sound like you disagreed about my comment on where whey comes from. You went so far as to tell people to not listen to me.
Yes I did say soy is better than whey but in a completely different message. Soy is better for me and you can drown yourself in all the whey you want.
Get your act together because it looks like you were accusing me of stating incorrect information in the message you replied to.
@uscpsycho
Soy protein is better because it doesn’t involve raping cows. However, most soy is not for people. It’s for cattle, pigs, and chicken feed, and grown on clearcut rainforest.
That said, pea/lentil protein is an even better option than soy. Non-GMO availability and lentils/peas grow in far more diverse climate, soil, and growing conditions.
@cengland0 Bro, you’re the one with the burden of proof. If you don’t understand the concept, please look it up. You can’t go making claims like that and then tell everyone else they have to prove you wrong.
Also, soy is not good for you. But as someone who uses the term “raping cows”, I’m assuming you aren’t interested in that. I think we all know the real reason you’re pushing soy.
@mike808 Better is relative. Most people who use whey protein use it to support a weight training program. And for that whey is not only better it is the best protein supplement. That is why so many whey proteins are geared towards the fitness market and other types of protein not so much.
If you want a slower digesting protein then casein protein is better than whey.
If you say that other prtoeins are more humane or environmentally friendly or whatever else, then that can be valid as well. But for most users of whey supplements there isn’t a better alternative for building muscle.
If you are a vegetarian and take protein supplements to increase your protein intake, I would argue whey is still better but other sources of protein will serve you well. If you are vegan then whey isn’t even an option.
The bottom line is that there is no one answer for what is best. But for that other chum to say that soy is unilaterally better than whey just shows how little he knows about protein and it’s very misleading to people who also don’t know but don’t pretend to be experts.
@cengland0 I disagree with your premise that whey is cheap worthless garbage and your conclusion that it is pushed because of its higher profit margins. It is widely considered the best type of protein supplement.
The only accurate thing you’ve said so far is how whey is produced and I never disagreed with that.
By the way, let me explain to you how products are priced. If a company manufactures both whey protein and soy protein they’re both marked up by the same percentage so the margin is the same. They don’t sell both at the same price regardless of cost to produce and make less money on one than the other. Where do you get these crazy ideas???
both whey protein and soy protein they’re both marked up by the same percentage so the margin is the same
Having worked as a senior manager in retail for 8 years and having to place hundreds of thousands of dollars in yearly orders for a variety of products, I can assure you that different products have a different markup percentages. A TV, for example, is marked up very little percentage wise while small components like a phone case is marked up a lot.
If you ever go to college, they will probably make you take both micro and macro economics to get your Associates degree. In those classes, they will discuss the supply and demand curves and how companies determine prices. It’s not a flat percentage markup around the board for all products.
@cengland0 Burden of proof doesn’t apply when something is widely accepted and scientific. I asked you to look up what it means, and you couldn’t even do that. But whatever…
Also, your video only tells us what whey is. We know what it is… again, because that’s fact. The problem we have is regarding your wild claims that it’s useless and only used because it’s cheaper. It can be profitable AND better, you know.
Again, using terms like “raping cows” shows your true colors here. Using dairy products isn’t “rape”, and it’s painfully obvious you just have a problem with animal byproducts.
@TBoneZeOriginal I think you have me confused with someone else. Please be sure to respond to the correct person as I never said anything about raping cows.
Anyway, like all female mammals, milk is produced after a pregnancy and a simple google search resulted in this tidbit: “Dairy cows must give birth to one calf per year in order to continue producing milk. Typically they are artificially inseminated within three months of giving birth.”
Also, your video only tells us what whey is.
It is the proof that was requested about my claim that it is a byproduct of the cheese making process. Do you agree with the comment that all these replies are under now? Hopefully you learned something from that video.
Burden of proof doesn’t apply when something is widely accepted and scientific.
Until it becomes a theory, then it is only a hypothesis. Show me “The theory of whey protein is better than soy” and I will then say you don’t need more proof. And, even after it becomes a theory, it must hold up to scrutiny. It’s sort of like the “Theory of Evolution” being tested by religious people all the time. To remain a theory, it must hold up to all their questioning.
wild claims that it’s useless
Where did I claim whey is useless?
and only used because it’s cheaper.
I did not say that. In fact, it’s not necessarily cheaper, retail wise. I said it was a byproduct of cheese and has a higher profit margin so that’s why it is pushed.
It can be profitable AND better, you know.
Absolutely agree that it can be very profitable and better for the retailer. I used to buy my soy protein at GNC for decades but GNC stopped selling their brand of soy protein and only have whey protein now. They would not have discontinued the product if it was profitable. Even if it was profitable, whey is more profitable and you do not want to sell a product that cuts into your profit margins of a more profitable product.
Regarding your links:
There was a study that said soy protein lowers testosterone but was later debunked by another study. I think you may have linked one of the older studies because it’s talking about the isoflavones and how it can cause breast cancer in lab rats but your second link says that isoflavones help fight heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer, and other diseases.
Some people don’t handle milk products very well especially those people who are lactose intolerant and whey does contain lactose. Only the whey isolate part has the lactose taken out because it is heavily processed.
Whey contains cholesterol at about 1% and soy does not contain any. Whey protein contains a high amount of saturated fat and may increase your cholesterol count.
Soy has a higher concentration of the amino acids arginine and glutamine than whey does.
When increased amounts of whey protein are taken over an extended period of time, there is a risk of developing kidney disorders, including kidney stones.
With all that said, you’re welcome to have all the whey you want and I will continue buying soy protein instead. I’m not trying to sway you away from the products you want and I’m not going to complain if you want to take up smoking or any other harmful practice because, frankly, I don’t know who you are and don’t care about you.
@cengland0 I’m comparing two different kinds of proteins that are the same type of product which are relatively close in price and you’re comparing a TV to a cell phone case. OK buddy.
@uscpsycho Then take a single product type of vehicles sold by a single manufacturer Ford. Ford makes more money off F-series trucks from $8k to 13k each. Compare that to all their vehicles combined at an average of $1,863.
There continues to be more demand for F-series vehicles that they raise the price $3,400 just because of the demand. Direct from Ford’s December 2017 financials: “For F-150, it was impressive story as well. Average F-150 ATP in December was $43,300 for the month. That’s a $3,400 increase over a year ago. Both were driven, as I mentioned, by very high-series of mix.”
Ford makes so much profit off their F-series trucks that they do not want to bring back the popular Ranger series because those sales will cut into the sales of the more profitable F-series vehicles.
@uscpsycho Here’s another pricing example. I picked this one because they sell both models simultaneously. These are products in the same category manufactured by the same company and sold by the same company.
“Apple’s iPhone X has higher margin than iPhone 8”
“Apple’s new flagship iPhone X makes the company more money per phone than its iPhone 8 model, according to an analysis, which found the iPhone X’s flashier parts cost Apple 25 percent more than the iPhone 8, but that it retailed 43 percent higher.”
“The iPhone X smartphone costs $357.50 to make and sells for $999, giving it a gross margin of 64 percent, according to TechInsights, a firm that tears down technology devices and analyzes the parts inside. The iPhone 8 sells for $699 and has a gross margin of 59 percent.” (Calculated cost of iPhone 8 is 286.59.)
Gross Profit on iPhone 8 = $412.41
Gross Profit on iPhone X = $641.50
There can be many more of these examples but most companies keep their cost prices secret. I told you about my experience working in retail and I did know the cost of every product I sold. I gave you my expert conclusion based upon facts. If you want more examples, ask someone who is still in the retail business.
@cengland0 Bravo to both of you for one of the strangest and most entertaining internet arguments I’ve ever read! At least it was more civil than the majority of them. If you ever want to see a real shitshow of internet arguments, google whether or not to defoliate marijuana plants.
I assume this stuff has an expiration date. Can anyone clue us in to its remaining shelf life?
No persobally interested, I like food too much to use something like this, but I also don’t want someone stuck with pounds and pounds of this and a month or two to use it.
@mike808 I agree about the cow factory. But I Don’t see a problem with GMO. They have been approved by the FDA and, in some cases, the GMO version has health benefits like golden rice with extra vitamin A to help blindness in 3rd world countries.
@cengland0 I was pointing out attributes of the other options, and really, the only thing whey has going for it is that it is cheap - because it is subsidized by the environmental damage costs being dumped into the planet. Its not sustainable, its not low-carbon, it’s not animal-slave-free.
But its cheap. Just like that other extraction commodity: dino-juice, aka big oil.
So the blowhards that have no criteria other than “it’s the cheapest”, leave out that the real costs everyone else has no choice but to be stuck with.
Cheapest != “best” or “better”. At least for the intelligent consumer making a considered choice when they vote with their dollars. It doesn’t have to be a race to the bottom.
Suggested use: Consume approximately 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day through a combination of high protein foods and protein supplements. For the best results, consume your daily protein allotment over several small meals spread evenly throughout the day

What’s in the Box?
1x, 2x, or 6x 2lb containers of ProSupps PS Whey Protein
Can I lose weight on this stuff? I see it being sold everywhere,(walmart center aisles), and I don’t think my America has gone from sedentary fat cows to everyone excersizing. Therefore, I concluded this must be some kinda weight loss ‘supplement’ I don’t know about.
And I’m not talking wallet weight.
@wew I can’t tell if you’re being serious or sarcastic but the answer is that this is not a weight loss supplement. However, you can lose weight while taking this. If weight loss is your goal you probably won’t be aided by protein powder.
so what! The banana arrived here and I tried everything to get it to mix but it won’t. It keeps clumping, I even used my blender. Who wants to try to drink this crap with clumpy lumps in it, plus it tastes awful!!! And MEH won’t let me return it—they finally answered my email today and said “food isn’t returnable” FOOD! this isn’t food, it’s clump–it belongs in the kitty litter box! I am waiting for another email from MEH before I contact my credit card company and start making waves. MEH, so far you suck.

@truestalpaca as a personal trainer, your job is to keep them fat, so they keep coming back to you so you can sell them special diets and meal plans.

Whey is a leftover byproduct from making cheese. It’s so cheap because it would be thrown away if they didn’t put it in protein shakes.
Soy protein, on the other hand, has to be grown for that specific purpose. Much higher profit margins for whey so everyone pushes it over soy.

@cengland0 You are correct. That was mike808. Sorry about that.
“Apple’s iPhone X has higher margin than iPhone 8”
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple-iphone/apples-iphone-x-has-higher-margin-than-iphone-8-analysis-idUSKBN1D62RZ
@cengland0 @uscpsycho @jaypeeh
Gym rat egos, yikers
I assume this stuff has an expiration date. Can anyone clue us in to its remaining shelf life?
No persobally interested, I like food too much to use something like this, but I also don’t want someone stuck with pounds and pounds of this and a month or two to use it.
@shampshire Whey protein can be used loooong past any printed expiration date. Same benefit to you and no harm to you.
@shampshire It’s no ever-lasting candy corn but does have an expiration date of 1/2019. signed: meh-dude
Does the banana pudding whey taste anything like circus peanuts? I bet it does.
/giphy I am going to pump you up
As I’m currently making my whey through 5.5lbs of a “summer fruit” flavor, I am less inclined to buy flavors that are very likely disgusting.
I’m lactose intolerant. Consuming whey leads to weight loss for me. So, am I forever cursed to be a 98 lb weakling?
Where’s the Saturday bundle of crap?
The banana was just awful. Gag worthy. Promptly threw it away. Haven’t tried the marshmallow yet…
@vjnexus I am glad it was sold out then.
@mfladd don’t know why anyone would ever think banana powder would actually taste good.
@RiotDemon Especially banana flavored whey powder- just the name is gag worthy.
@RiotDemon @sammydog01 I like putting a banana in my vanilla protein shake…so why not?
And don’t shake your head just because you are surprised I drink a protein shake…pfft!
@mfladd unless it’s a real banana, it’s usually artificial banana flavoring. Might as well eat some circus peanuts.
@RiotDemon You had to go to the circus peanuts, didn’t you? Damn you! I HATE circus peanuts.
@vjnexus it’s real bad
@mfladd @RiotDemon I love circus peanuts.
@sammydog01 Then you probably should of bought this!
No, it’s not settled. Soy protein is better. Period.
@cengland0 No whey, dude.
@cengland0 You’re drunk.
@cengland0 Lentil/Pea protein rules.
Whey protein comes from cow rape factories. Gotta keep 'em knocked up to make milk for the veal.
Pea milk can be non-GMO. Almost no soy is. Its all GMO soy, mostly grown on deforested rain forest. 90% of the soy grown goes to cattle feed.
Ripple. Available at Target.

@mike808 I agree about the cow factory. But I Don’t see a problem with GMO. They have been approved by the FDA and, in some cases, the GMO version has health benefits like golden rice with extra vitamin A to help blindness in 3rd world countries.
@mike808 crypto (coin) food

Geez med-whey-ocrebot is slow tonight.
I love s’mores! Two pounds for me.
@wew this is something you take before and after a workout, usually one that involves resistance like weight lifting.
@uscpsycho I was being serious, and thanks for the answer
@wew Buy a case and make some DIY Soylent with it.

I couldn’t even make my whey down the comments without someone tooting their own horn…
@sp3ar That’s just the whey it is.
Can anyone comment on how these actually taste?
Is $4/lb a decent price for whey? Seems like it?
Does anyone know how much of it is whey protein concentrate and how much is isolate?
That’s arguably the biggest difference maker as far as quality.
Hey! It’s Popeye! I love Popeye!
/giphy Popeye spinach
