@Euniceandrich Where did Amazon say it used batteries? I know my eyesight is going, but I’ve looked over the entire linked page multiple times and don’t see that.
@shahnm Yes. The inner motor is still turning, but the clutch is disengaged so the blades don’t rotate. I thought that was obvious, so I guess I have to ask where you got your perpetual motion Ph. D.?

I did find one listing that did mention that they use BATTERIES. Nothing about what kind of batteries. But . . . a tad bit more informative than every other single instance I’ve found.
It’s honestly kind of impressive this can exist with so little practical information extant.
@ZealotOnAStick The NewEgg page lists the following features:

Oh Yes. THIS. This is hysterically funny. I Must Buy. Bwahahahahahaaaa!! (I think the batteries cost more than the fans, but WTH do I still have VMP for, really?)
I don’t know what shows a poorer level of judgment,
a) the fact that I bought these, or
b) the fact that I posted the the giphy for the order number.
/giphy memorable-scandalous-flesh
Allot of questions as to what batteries, I found something that says it’s 2 AA batteries, but apparently it could be 2 AAA batteries from what somebody else found. Here is what I found. https://portablfa.com/q1084 As long as it’s not C or D I think we are good. Plus really cheap price and summer is around the corner, so all the backyard bbqs, etc. These will be good. I am assuming they are also better quality than anything you find in your dollar stores.
Probably gonna be another unopened box in the garage, but what the hell, it’s only two bucks… half the price of that TV standby mode killer from a couple days and probably just about as useless…
I’m pleasantly surprised at how well these work. No problems with either of mine. Sensitivity is fine. They push more air than expected for little flexible plastic blades. Only real complaint is they’re somewhat noisy. But that’s more reason to use them and drown out the gf.
@cinoclav As am I! For $1 I expected something truly meh and these are not! I like the touch feature, should be awesome when doing stuff outdoors, plus they have some heft to them…not cheap lightweight plastic like I expected.
@cinoclav Mine only work in the stand. If I squeeze the rubber strips on the side one of them will work without the stand, the other will not. I don’t think I’ll use it around my neck, but it would be awkward doing that with the stand on the fan.
@heartny You shouldn’t have to squeeze them. They’re not pressure sensitive, they appear to work by connecting a circuit. If they work in the stand they should work when touching the sides. Maybe you’re dead?
@heartny You had numerous opportunities to buy blood pressure monitors here. Might want to check the junk drawer. If you’re actually dead, can I have your working fan?
@cinoclav@heartny LOL just tried one of mine and it only works in the stand. The stand has ridges on it that push against the sides of the fan and then it works. If I take the fan out of the stand and push on the sides of it then the fan works. Guess mine will be in the stand man !
So what is the record for the lowest $ sales on a single deal here?
I think this might set a new lower money total.
You’d think Meh would try to encourage VMP members to buy more than one to lower the per item shipping hit to them. VMP shipping must be costing them close to the $2 price when you factor in the handling.
Must be one of their famous “experiments” in on-line commerce. Does that make us the Guinea pigs?
@phendrick@PooltoyWolf Distinctly not tragic. No humans died. (Only fatality; one very freaked out dog.)
From a Michigander’s point of view, it was incredibly well timed. It failed early enough in the planning process of the much larger Mackinaw Bridge that the Mackinaw was redesigned to be safe in almost all wind conditions, for almost all cars. (A single Volkswagen Beetle was blown off the bridge under very unusual conditions a couple of decades ago.)
I’d consider a seriously defective and expensive bridge “tragic” from a taxpayer financial perspective.
Two vehicles have “inappropriately exited” the Mackinac bridge (at Mackinaw City) - a Yugo (a less than wise decision for a Mac bridge comprising by the owner in the first place) and a Bronco. There was debate whether either of those were due to wind.
@hamjudo@phendrick@PooltoyWolf@RedOak
My truck driver Uncle said he was instructed by his company to take off his seatbelt while crossing the Mackinac bridge. This was so he could possibly jump out the door if he’s blown off.
Haha, it can be a pretty exciting and spectacular drive.
I get grief from my spouse if I don’t drive in the inside lane.
Beautifully scenic.
A friend’s company gets contracts to paint the underside of the bridge. The bridge authority used to say as soon as they finish painting it, they start again painting it.
@phendrick@PooltoyWolf@RedOak Yup, thanks for the correction. I misremembered the Yugo as a different light weight European car.
If I recall, the high winds may have assisted the Yugo over the rail, but the only reason it had a chance of Yugo ejection was because the Yugo was traveling sideways after bouncing off something.
Wow! I excited to see these things for $1/piece… and that you had an abundance of them (bath? Neoprene sleeves??). I need 40-50 of them for a beach wedding end of May. I thought perfect! Meh comes through for me! Only to find out I can only order 2 fans… . If you have any left over… I let me know… i still have neoprene sleeves is anyone wants to trade …
@wildmomo Well that makes me feel a little better. I was plain ole kicking myself because the first time in forever there’s something I really wanted to buy, not that I dont buy often…lol… but I was really excited about these because I’m taking several of my grandkids on vacation in July. We will be outside in the heat a lot. I fell asleep and slept through the midnight “reveal “ but saw them about 630am. I was going to order some when I got to work but work was…insane is the only lady like word I can think of and by the time I could breath and check, they were gone. Two would have just caused problems with the little ones…but they sure would have been nice. I’m sorry you couldn’t get any more, but congratulations!
Got mine today. They seem to push more air than I expected. Also, one appeared to be DOA, but after I took out the batteries and reinstalled them, it worked. Definitely $2 worth.
@elpepe Good question, and amazon doesn’t have the answer either. I found 2 AA batteries, but somebody else said they found 2 AAA so as long as its not C or D, it should be ok. https://portablfa.com/q1084
If you just aim the fans at each other, one will power the other via windpower. So you save on half the batteries to start, and then the “wind-sharing” perpetual motion effect takes over. But your fans will only be cooling each other. If only we could buy 4 or 6 to get a perpetual polar vortex going.
In for 2. If y’all could have this delivered to my house no later than April 7th, that’d be great. Family trip to Disney in hot-ass Florida on the 8th.
Yeah, dont be bummed. First I thought big ass box of Lucas batteries was bad, so I tried refrigerated Energizers. 1 at least is DOA. hate that this becoming a trend. Too late at night to check 2nd one. Will try tomorrow
@Mandamm The first one I unpacked was not very sensitive to touch at first (even after I switched on the stealth power switch on the back of the motor). After using it briefly it got much more sensitive.
It looked very much like an electrical contact issue, specifically, my dry hands immediately after I came inside the building.
My free Harbor Freight voltmeter measured 1.8 volts between the two rubber contacts. It passed enough current to get the fan to run at full speed when the meter was on the two volt scale. Set to measure current it registered 450 microamps. Current measurements are inherently low impedance, so it isn’t surprising that that also caused the fan to go full speed.
@hamjudo@Mandamm First one seemed to be DOA. After opening and resetting the batteries a couple of times and some finger licking contact checking, it now works; in fact its almost too sensitive. Maybe there’s a coating on the touch strips, or its just oxidized (these are 2005 vintage if the dates on the box and docs are relevant).
Kinda noisy in operation. Barely worth the Meh price at most (and only because I already got my VMP payments worth of free shipping).
The shit I buy just because of the damn VMP curse…

@shahnm EVIL incarnate.
@MrJazz Mehvil incarnate!
@shahnm I’m about to (finally) eliminate that temptation.
How are these powered? Magic?
@FsFalcon My question, also. I presume they are a new perpetual motion device that can be started and stopped at will.
@FsFalcon touch, which I assume means manually spinning with your finger, which explains the price
@FsFalcon I think they’re wind powered.
@andyw Is it still a perpetual motion device if it’s stopped?
@FsFalcon The Amazon link does say it requires batteries, but doesn’t say which ones.
@Euniceandrich @FsFalcon Just make sure your refrigerator is well stocked with all of the popular battery models, and you’ll be all set.
@Euniceandrich Where did Amazon say it used batteries? I know my eyesight is going, but I’ve looked over the entire linked page multiple times and don’t see that.
@FsFalcon You know those times Meh sells 96 batteries. Well, you’re going to need them.
@shahnm Yes. The inner motor is still turning, but the clutch is disengaged so the blades don’t rotate. I thought that was obvious, so I guess I have to ask where you got your perpetual motion Ph. D.?
@andyw Oh it was at one of the super fancy schools! My parents paid top dollar to buy me a spot there.
@FsFalcon They’re powered by Unicorn Rainbow Farts™.
@shahnm Ah-they were ahead of their time. And I see you earned a good sense of humor along with the other degree.
@FsFalcon Thats what I asked myself, and finally found the answer after searching for a while, it’s 2 aa batteries, https://portablfa.com/q1084

@cengland0 A prime number of C cells, probably.
@cengland0 2 aa batteries, it took forever for me to find the info, but I did https://portablfa.com/q1084
@Armando @cengland0 They are AAA batteries
I’m glad I’m not alone in wanting to know what the hell powers these things. Chipmunks? Sorcery? A really long cord?
@Pony All three, my friend. All three…
@Pony You sneak, late at night, into @shahnm’s fridge and help your self…
@Kidsandliz @Pony You can sneak in any time you want, but you can never leave…

THIS. This is the kind of weird crap that I don’t need that I come here to buy.

@Kenbo try editing your post and saving to see if you get a new one
@Kenbo Imagine calling your insurance company and trying to explain that your car was just hit by a plane.
@Kenbo Umm. Maybe a little too soon…?

I’m so bummed I missed these!
@hamjudo @Mandamm First one seemed to be DOA.
Ah… mine is still somewhere on the back of a truck. No expected date of delivery yet.
Sadly, won’t be getting mine… Inventory issues? bah humbug “We have so many fans, we’re willing to sell you some!”
These things SUCK!!! The touch sensitivity is all messed up, they don’t work half the time. Never again will we buy these!
THESE ARE GARBAGE. I can’t even give them as gifts, because they’re both in the trash.
Don’t bother with these, you will toss them after first attempt in using them.
