I’m so conflicted. I know these are fake and don’t have near the right frequency or power to actually disinfect anything…but it’s the best price I’ve ever seen!
@CatsAreGods@ELJAY They are trying to figure what they can “Cell” it for, which is apparently way too much, vs what it actually “Cost” them, which is probably very small because they are probably leftovers found in a warehouse so it’s either sell them here or e-recycle them, or dump unsafely offshore as happens to a lot of e-waste.
In other words they are “fishin” to “cell” these at a high price while knowing they “cost” nearly nuttin.
Again with the Covid junk that has not been needed. If eye did want to sanitize and my fat ass was to lazy physically clean items or devices. Than this might be a somewhat useful investment. Although eye question a cardboard box from Carrollton used; with placing a much bigger uv light inside it placed on a timer wouldn’t sanitize the mere particles of diseases. Which brings me to. Why not carry disinfecting wipes or aerosol spray? Not sanitizer alcohol wipes or disinfecting spray; that shit is not the same neither or what people want. Put either of those 2 items up at even a pre-covid normal price that meh patrons could determine if they would choose to buy or not. Eye for one would buy such items. Not some no name fucking brands either. Kirkland, Members Mark, AZBasic, Clorox, Lysol. Any of them damn it and I would buy. You keep tagging me on junk. Please stop!
Functional UV light sterilizers generate enough ozone to create the distinct smell. If these don’t smell like ozone after being run for a few minutes, they’re no good.
These have been sold before. Could a previous buyer do the sniff test for us?
@willcollier Super unlikely. EEPROMs are usually packaged in glass filled plastic that not even real UV light can penetrate. Fortunately, they can be electrically erased pretty quickly - check the data sheet for instructions. If you still have some windowed-package EPROMs lying around, that haven’t hit their erase cycle limit, then this light is probably just too weak to erase them.
@willcollier The EE in EEPROM stands for electrically erasable, so no UV light won’t do it. The old EPROMs with a window are the ones that can be erased with light.
This is a UVB light. In terms of the coronavirus, this is a placebo. Effective disinfectant lights use UVC. None of the devices are well-regulated, so look to see if there has been any testing before buying any UV sanitizer.
@snapster@stuckigs@Thumperchick Not 100% accurate, but UVC is the only one reported to be effective at killing COVID (which is realistically why anyone is even interested in this). UVB is also a more dangerous-to-humans form of UV Light.

Description
The ➜ UV-C Sanitizer multifunctional disinfecting box is an easy was to disinfect your phone, wallet, keys, airpods, or any other item small enough to fit in the box! Using ultraviolet rays, this box causes cell cost fission, destroying the molecular structure of DNA or RNA and causing the growing cell to die. Along with aromatherapy, this sanitizer provides up to 99% sterilization rate in just 5 minutes!
Bought this last time. Yes, there is a slight ozone odor at the end of the cycle. Be warned that the beeping signal that announces the end of cycle is alarm-clock LOUD.
The link to the Amazon comparison product is a different item, at least in terms of the physical box itself and its light source. The Amazon version was reviewed here:
tl;dr: over the two video series, the Amazon model is demonstrated to be a UVC product and the contact time of 15 minutes is in the realm of adequate for sanitization. From that review, though, this doesn’t look like it has nearly the same UVC output potential.
After suffering through an hour with Gabba Golda’s Bluetooth sleep headphones, with their gigantic sharp edged cubiform speakers and their piercing carrier whine, I am done with that company forever.
You don’t fuck up that badly, on that many levels, if you give one solitary shit about what you’re selling. I certainly wouldn’t trust these assholes to make a health product.
@jrubin I just opened one. It is incredibly difficult until you know the trick. Natural instinct is to puss in on the tab on the side as you pull it open. This will keep it sealed tight. If you apply a slight outward pulling pressure to the tab as you lift, it comes right open.
Total garbage. Can’t open the box without a pry bar and the alarm is obnoxiously loud and beeps continually until you press and HOLD the button for 2 seconds. WTAF? This thing belongs on the island of misfit toys, not out in the real world.

UV FTW!!
@yakkoTDI Oh wait, this isn’t a reference to A Clockwork Orange so it probably means ultra violet.
Size?
@sixfootgeek Dimensions on this page: https://www.nordstromrack.com/s/gabba-goods-tech-accessories-phone-and-accessory-uv-sanitizer-box/n3279096?color=WHITE
Inside dimensions?
@bwiderski Smaller than the outside dimensions.
How do I know it’s not just a box with some blue lights in it?
@awk put The back of your hand under the light for a few seconds and then smell it. If it smells like burnt pork then it’s UVC light
@atherrien95 @awk what a mixed message. Ouch yet yum bacon!
@awk @hchavers yeah. Uvc starts burning the skin immediately. Same with the eyes. It’s pretty potent stuff.
@atherrien95 @awk
The model name has “UVB” in it. So I’m pretty sure it gives off UV-B light.
@awk @Narwalt we’ve been bamboozled
If we really need this, we’re all dead anyway.
Can I use this to get a tan?
@Superllama7 Are you related to Thumbelina?
@Superllama7 Yes, but only once.
I’m so conflicted. I know these are fake and don’t have near the right frequency or power to actually disinfect anything…but it’s the best price I’ve ever seen!
@CatsAreGods I think you explained the cheap price in your conflict
@hchavers thatwasthejoke.jpg
@CatsAreGods An article explaining that they maybe work on some pathogens but maybe not Covid: https://www.pcmag.com/news/do-uv-light-phone-sanitizers-really-work
So maybe.
@medonsw /r/maybemaybemaybe
@CatsAreGods @hchavers And how many of my Meh purchases were made under similar reasoning?
What the heck is “cell cost fission”?
(I’m almost certain it’s a typo, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out what was intended…)
@ELJAY That’s what happens when physicists or biologists mate with accountants.
@CatsAreGods @ELJAY Sounds painful

Cell COAT fission
UV light can’t be seen by the human eye, so how do know the UV light is on?
@hchavers You can never know for sure. So you put a mouse in the box.
Schrödinger’s mouse.
@hchavers I have a similar problem with the light in my refrigerator - every time I open the door to check, the light is on!
@hchavers @macromeh The light goes out in the refrigerator otherwise it would destroy the ambiance of the campfire.
@hchavers @macromeh @yakkoTDI The light goes out in the refrigerator, otherwise the batteries wouldn’t be able to sleep.

@whomeyesu I think your dictation keeps using the wrong word.
@whomeyesu
@AROAH What are you talking about? Eye do not quite understand your comment refers to.
Remember what happened to the Golgafrinchans, may they rest in peace:
@Trillian Uh oh. Douglas Adams had 2020 foresight.
@Trillian I came here to say “telephone sanitizer? A dead telephone sanitizer‽”
“Best kind.”
@merichmond @Trillian First thing I thought of when I saw today’s meh.

@hamjudo Bought this last time. Yes, there is a slight ozone odor at the end of the cycle.
I wonder (seriously) if these could be used to erase EEPROMS.

For the biologically paranoid and chronically overfunded among us…
UVB light does not kill germs. It has to be UVC.

This says UV-C: https://www.nordstromrack.com/s/gabba-goods-tech-accessories-phone-and-accessory-uv-sanitizer-box/n3279096?color=WHITE
Can we get an official weigh-in from Meh Product Management with regard to what we’re actually getting?
CC: @thumperchick @snapster
@corrado @thumperchick @snapster is it really UVC since that is the only light that kills germs…
@snapster @stuckigs @Thumperchick Not 100% accurate, but UVC is the only one reported to be effective at killing COVID (which is realistically why anyone is even interested in this). UVB is also a more dangerous-to-humans form of UV Light.
ref: https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/coronavirus-covid-19-and-medical-devices/uv-lights-and-lamps-ultraviolet-c-radiation-disinfection-and-coronavirus
I would say its UV-B since thats the model

@whogots Gabba Golda? Seriously? I have got to get new glasses so I can keep a closer eye on autocarrot.
Judging from the airpods shown in the sanitizer it doesn’t look like a large phone will fit in this unit.
@mehrrychristmas Bold of you to assume their product image artist can photoshop his way out of a very small paper bag.
How do I start a return
@mspink36 go to meh.com/orders, find the item, and click I need help with this.
If I had known that I can’t get these to open, I would not have bought 6 of them. I can’t give presents that are unusable
@jrubin did you write in to support?

What is up with the shipping? I live in VA; it shipped from Texas to NJ, to Maryland to NJ. It has been 13 days, and no indication of being delivered.
I’m having shipping issues too. It been nearly 2 weeks and the last shipping update was nov 24 and says it hasn’t even left the facility yet??
Total garbage. Can’t open the box without a pry bar and the alarm is obnoxiously loud and beeps continually until you press and HOLD the button for 2 seconds. WTAF? This thing belongs on the island of misfit toys, not out in the real world.
One item did not work at all. No cord included. Box had been retaped. Was a gift. Would like another item.
