They aren’t washable. You can’t remove the lighting for cleaning. This goes for both the ball caps and the beanies.
The ball caps have dim and poorly aimed output, and there is more than one design with differing misfeatures. The black ball caps appear to have been intended for the promo-merch logo-gimme-cap market, as they lack a UPC.
The fleece beanies are thin, and the lighting has three levels; Very Dim, Even Dimmer, and Is This Thing On?
Looking at the source’s website, they only list rechargeables now, while these require either CR2032 (x4) or AAA (x2). I can’t say for sure, but it looks like this bunch was v1.0 stuff.
Fleece?
Thin knit cover over a thin layer of a clone of Thinsulate?
Mystery neoprene-foam-like stuff?
Actual quilted interior with a decent knit cover?
The specs say many things about the LEDs, but next to nothing about the warming characteristics of the headwear, which is kind of important.
@werehatrack The beanies are made of near-fleece knit fabric that is thin enough for lightweight gloves; if you’re bald, they’re mostly going to be sunblock.
Before anyone (including me) lampoons the puny light output of these, I will point out that not so long ago, a multiple-D-cell Maglite only produced about 35 lumens, and we thought that was pretty neat. And the pocket two-AA Maglite was a standard tool for mechanics and others, with lumens output in the single digits.
That said, my pocket EDC 14500-cell lights are over 100 lumens, but not by much, with a more focused area of illumination that makes them a lot more useful than something that diffuses more widely. But for a hike down to the minimart to grab a couple of things, the caps or beanies leave hands free for whatever needs might arise. I’d call these seasonal; the ball cap version seems oriented toward warm weather, but is the beanie warm enough to aspire to winter utility? Inquiring minds want to know.
@therealjrn@werehatrack Never “had to” hit anybody, he says…. I’m tempted to put in a laugh emoji as I mean that as a kind-hearted, neighborly joke, but given the current events, I can’t joke in this manner. Still, I’m heartened to hear that civility was maintained in your situation. I’ll keep the rest of my discourse out of this thread.
@werehatrack
Oh, @mehvid1, no need to explain lol. It was a half-way house, meaning half-way in and half-way out. No fences, no handcuffs, no belly chains, none of that. I didn’t carry a gun or a tazer. Just a big ass flashlight.
Just me and about 300 of my closest felonious friends. Our typical inmate was in for non-violent drug offenses. This was their last stop in the system before getting out. Most of them worked outside jobs, and signed in and out. They were highly motivated not to fuck this up.
I worked the overnight shift mostly. We were out in the country underneath God’s beautiful Oklahoma sky. It was nice. I liked it out there.
@cfg83 No flame war I’ve seen has ever reached the length of the Existential Flame War on the old alt.callahans Usenet newsgroup. And none has ever been as much fun, either.
@cfg83@werehatrack yes, now instead of flame wars we have one-upping posts about how the flame wars we knew were better than the flame wars anyone else knew. smh
@Jonas4321@werehatrack For me the irony is that back then, the “normals” could chuckle at us silly little nerds arguing about nipples on Batman costumes.
Fast forward to today, and the quality of argument may be low, but it turns out we are ALL NERDS now.
/showme nerd typing argument furiously on PC while jock taps argument furiously on smart phone.
I’ve had the orange and camo ballcaps for over a decade and I love them. Two for $18 is an amazing price, so I’m in for a set of white and navy to replace my aging ones.
48 lumens are not very bright, but i’m not very bright & i do just fine + i need those 8 dic batteries!! But JSYK, the light would Not shine anywhere like d brightness as dipicted & thoe photos!! None of us are dumb enough to believe that!!
@1DisabledWarVet@MrNews Ah, but remember the old two-AA incandescent pocket lights that were so dim that you needed to strike a match to see enough to know if they were on? (And the batteries lasted about an hour if you were lucky.)
I thought I remembered getting a thing similar to the beanie in an IRK once, so I dug around in one of my not-used-yet StuffPiles™ and there it was. Except it’s different. The one I’ve got has four less-bright dimmable LEDs that are pointed straight out from the beanie instead of ahead and down, and it’s a regular knit toque with a rubber flange to hold the removable-on-laundry-day light puck. I think the light on the ones in this offer might be more useful. I dunno about the beanie itself, since nothing’s been said about the qualities of the material involved.
That said, I need to haul the trash and recycling bins out to the curb, so the light on the one I have is going to get tested now.
@therealjrn Huh. That approximate amount of light is actually pretty useful for walking around outside in the dark. I might be in for a pair of the beanies.
Anyone wanna order 2 beanies and I’ll order 2 ball caps and we can trade one for one? Why the geniuses at MEH.COM figure out that we’d want one for this frozen hell we are occupying rn and one for the far off future where we welcome spring? (Northern NY)
@admiralpoopants Bingo. I was just thinking this too. Unfortunately shipping would make it pointless for us. I’d like one of each but really don’t need 4.
Give us more camouflage - we’re not at war with enough countries and ourselves yet. More guns. More violence. More oil. Definitely love shooting muh deer I fed for months in a constrained fenced areas because they are pests and out of control. Or is this also on the immigrants? Are they spreading deer around me. Manggggg — I forget, let me turn on NASCAR for moral guidance. I need to know what the party says is to blame today.
I got a pair of the lighted beanies a while back. My initial thought was that they’d be great for when I’m crawling under a vehicle to work on something as (a) the beanie will keep my hair free of dirt & (b) light!
sadly the light part doesn’t work for me. the beanie’s LED is angled in such a way that it illuminates the item that I’m trying to work on but its light also reflects off the inside of my glasses, resulting in a glare effect which makes it difficult to see the item I’m trying to work on
TL,DR : the beanies are probably not a good choice for glasses-wearers
@visioneer_one These may not be the same, or it may be wearer-dependent. The very dim light from these beanies did not reflect inside my glasses. YMMV, but see also the comment much farther up concerning the light output.

This is not a bright idea. More like a blight idea.
@yakkoTDI Agreed. This is one of the stupider items Meh has inflicted on us…
@robson @yakkoTDI Can confirm.

Very, very Meh.
To the buyer for this deal,

@phendrick Younger folks here can just scratch their pates and wonder.
@phendrick
Like my pappy told me: “The pants do all the work, but the vest gets all the gravy”
…Pappy liked to drink, now and then…
@phendrick @therealjrn- yeah,… the glass does all the work, but the booze gets all the credit!!

@phendrick
Cheers, @1DisabledWarVet!
i feel like a cap and beanie 2 pack would make more sense
@omally Me too.
@omally
Me three.
@omally i only came here to say this. Thank you for your service
@omally Based on what I received, “not buying them” would make more sense.
So…
Fleece?
Thin knit cover over a thin layer of a clone of Thinsulate?
Mystery neoprene-foam-like stuff?
Actual quilted interior with a decent knit cover?

OH GOOD LORD!!! HOW MUCH SNOW IS THERE???

@therealjrn There is only one quantity of snow that requires shovelling, and that is “too much.”
“whole town is covered. better start here on this remote logging road.”

@werehatrack
I carried one on rounds when I worked at the DOC half-way house. Never had to hit anybody with it, but it was reassuring.
They should have put together a cap and beanie combo. I don’t “need” either one, but I’d be more tempted.
@therealjrn @werehatrack Never “had to” hit anybody, he says…. And with the caps and beanies in hand, I say “lampoon away!” (Further remarks above.)
Must resist the nerd urge. Snap out of it. This will not make me look cool.
@hchavers Orange is the new black, or so I’ve heard. Camo with a bright light in it seems kind of oxymoronic…
@hchavers @werehatrack Hidden by day, highly targetable by night…
@hchavers @werehatrack
Also just plain moronic.
@hchavers @werehatrack-Yeah, + if some goon, or ICE thug shoots at the light in their eyes, they’re gonna shoot you in the face! 🫣
I have a specific reason for not needing these that’s slightly less compelling than I had hoped it would be, so I failed to not purchase them. Dammit.

@RDeichsel You love them as hats, or because of the lights?
@Kyeh They’re great hats and I love that whenever I need a little illumination I just click the button and I have light.
@RDeichsel Good to know, thanks!
@RDeichsel If yours have arrived, how do they compare to the previous ones?
48 lumens are not very bright, but i’m not very bright & i do just fine + i need those 8 dic batteries!!
But JSYK, the light would Not shine anywhere like d brightness as dipicted & thoe photos!! None of us are dumb enough to believe that!!
@1DisabledWarVet it wouldn’t even show up on the weird snow that guy is shoveling with that inappropriate shovel
@1DisabledWarVet It’s barely enough light to see your hand in front of your face!
@1DisabledWarVet @MrNews Ah, but remember the old two-AA incandescent pocket lights that were so dim that you needed to strike a match to see enough to know if they were on? (And the batteries lasted about an hour if you were lucky.)
@1DisabledWarVet With them in hand, I can say that the beanies (in particular) are very, very dim.
You heard the lady! THRILL to a live-action rubber-meets-the-road test!!
We’ll all stand by here!
@therealjrn Huh. That approximate amount of light is actually pretty useful for walking around outside in the dark. I might be in for a pair of the beanies.
@werehatrack And with the beanies from this sale in hand, that old one from the IRK was MUCH more useful. These new ones are … pitiful.

@admiralpoopants
Brilliant! hatmates.com eh?
I’ve already decided against these because I already have some goofy forehead lights already, and can add my own hat.
But your idea is Cheshire!
@admiralpoopants Bingo. I was just thinking this too. Unfortunately shipping would make it pointless for us. I’d like one of each but really don’t need 4.
Nope, not for me, this is what my mind goes to.
@Wollyhop
@aetris Oops. Looks like my obscure refrence was too obscure.
Every time I see a cap with LED lights in the brim I can’t help but think of the guy Mark in the TV Moonshiners series. He was pretty cool.
I’d be in if there was a deer stalker option

@user87647985 Well, as @werehatrack pointed out,
@user87647985 The sarcasm force is strong with this one.

Combo of one baseball hat and one beanie would have been ideal.
@AgentJay came here to say that!
Welp, guess I’ll keep searching for the “light of my life”!!
@bigjl98 Is this one of those confusing quests where you carry a lantern around all day?
