You know, my good friend’s father is actually the Imagineer mentioned in today’s meh scrawl. Really cool guy, continued inventing dope shit since then and he’s still out there being a G. Doug Patton is swag, and his son is absolutely wonderful too we do a lot of fun stuff outdoors.
I love the idea, but I wonder if since they’re real paraffin wax on the outside, they’d be a pain to clean?
Paraffin can be sort of sticky (for lack of a better word), and dust might really stick to them since they don’t burn away like a regular candle would (unless it’s coated with something). I’ve had decorative candles collect dust, and they didn’t wipe clean easily…so I just replaced them when they got gross (‘cause getting around to dusting a candle is very, very low on my chore list, lol! )
@k4evryng@unksol If the candle’s been sitting for a very long time, the dust is extremely difficult to get out of the bowl. With regular candles you can light them and let it burn until it’s melted the wax in the whole bowl area. Then you can scoop off any dust. Can’t do that with these.
So I got one in an IRK, it is really nice. It has a function to come on for a period every day. So I have that setup and every day I have this neat flickering candle in my room. It looks real, but it’s not. I may get more for gifts.
I have 10 of Luminara’s smaller non-wax candles — bought all the clearance stock at a craft store — and the flame effect is extremely good. The mechanism is a stationary LED aimed at a flame-shaped white reflector with a random magnetically-driven motion. From across a room, it simply looks like a candle flame. They do have a fairly active flicker, as if there’s always a little bit of a draft, but the look of the flame and the moving light that’s cast on the walls are strikingly like a real candle. These are fascinating to watch, and they really do lend a proper candlelit atmosphere.
I do have a remote, and the fun thing about that is that you can turn multiple candles on or off at once. You can freak out your guests by pointing across the room and spontaneously extinguishing all the candles that they thought were real.
@Achromatter I don’t know what it does on these, but on a similar pair that we bought from the same brand, that is the charging port for the two 18650 batteries that will run it for something like a week at a time. Perhaps these have an option for an external power brick to supplant the AA cells.
@Euniceandrich The remote works ok, but is rather directional. We’ve got 4-5 of them in the same area, but it frequently won’t get all of them at the same time.
@batness Some relatives got a 6-pack of this type of fake candle this last holiday, and they looked similar, and worked quite well, but were not actually made of wax for the outer shell. Are you sure that’s not the product you are thinking of? And those did come with a little remote control. But again, not waxy waxy but plasticky plastic.
So the writeup tells us not only are these nice (fake) candles, but come in nice (real) boxes. So even if you don’t like the candles that much, you also get candleboxes.
So it’s interesting that there’s not much difference between those that want the 4.5" and the 6.5", though the 6.5" has a slight advantage. But does this mean that size doesn’t really matter that much?
On the other hand, some seem to want both, which raises all sorts of questions. We are talking about candle size, right?

I’d going to bed. Too tired to burn the candle at both ends.
@Kidsandliz
Sweet dreams!

But…these do look neat.
@k4evryng That was what I was thinking too.
@k4evryng Parafin is pretty hard/smooth. I wouldn’t think of it as “sticky”. If you were just dustin a candle. But I’ve never tried.
@k4evryng @unksol Yeah, maybe it’s got a harder finish than traditional candles.
@k4evryng @Kyeh @unksol No problem here after several years of use. They collect more dust than hard plastic, but dusting them off is no trouble.
@k4evryng I recommend when they become too dirty or damaged then the best thing to do is…
It’s just that easy! I know, I thought it would have been a lot harder but it was way easier than I thought it would have been.
Have a great day,
Michael Edward - CEO MEH inc.

These make really shitty margaritas.
why do I get the feeling these were made from Glen’s ear scrapings?
Hey Steve (CEO OF MEH) I think you screwed up. Supposed to be 24 for $2
@bugger Wrong Steve.
@werehatrack Steve was holding Michael Edward hostage at the time. Apparently, S.W.A.T. took Steve down. Michael Edward is safe and sound now.
Sheesh, these don’t even change colors or react to music.
I really like how these can be set to turn on and off every day, just like a real candle.

If you place these at the points of your pentagram, can you summon a Linux demon?
@werehatrack Yes, but it’s a fake wax demon that flickers.
@werehatrack It’d be be a daemon or maybe a cron job since these have timers.
@werehatrack Or maybe an Arduino or ESP32 demon since they have an integrated circuit or maybe even a micro controller.

These suck for “Fifty Shades” kinda stuff. It takes forever
to get the wax to drip…
@Bumplepimp Moar flame!
What’s the connector, next to the on/off switch for? Can these be hard-wired?

If you spend more than five bucks for an LED candle, you are wrong.
@lowlypeon
But these are made of real wax!
And the ersatz flame wiggles!
WIGGLES!
@lowlypeon @Narwalt FUCKING WIGGLES DAMN IT!!!
YOU HEAR ME!!!
W I G G L E S !!!
I see them pictured with a remote, are you sure it isn’t included?
How would one go about locating a remote with only an on and an off button? And, couldn’t you use a single button remote and just let it toggle?
Man, I’m hung up on that remote.
Wow, the remote is sold out. https://luminara.com/products/2-feature-remote-control
@Euniceandrich Get the remote from Jeff for 8 denars.

But they do offer a 10 feature remote, which isn’t sold out!
Yay!
https://luminara.com/collections/accessories/products/10-feature-remote-control?variant=42590404411570
@Euniceandrich But will these candles support the additional features of this remote, specifically around flame brightness and speed?
@Euniceandrich The remote works ok, but is rather directional. We’ve got 4-5 of them in the same area, but it frequently won’t get all of them at the same time.
@Euniceandrich The 10 feature remote is interesting. But I’m not paying $15 shipping on a $13 remote.
Don’t be caught in the middle. Choose one or the other.
Heh! SideDeal has two similar units for $20 with the remote.
@werehatrack they’re actually better - they are rechargeable and can do a red laser light show on your ceiling!
I’m gonna fake purchase these
@brochenzo Better idea to fake purchase. If you “real purchase” with fake money, you might be getting into more serious trouble.

@MrNews Not the same. They flicker, but hey don’t have the dancing flame.
@MrNews @Trinityscrew They do often have this kind as well, but usually around the winter holidays.
I’m happy with the Luminara brand, but mostly because the larger candles use 2 D cells, and they last forever.
These have a constant LED, with a wobbling piece of plastic shaped like a flame. The effect is quite convincing.
Eh, I got a 6 pack of these for about the same price at Costco during winter holidays…They are super nice but at this price not worth getting 2 more.
@batness Some relatives got a 6-pack of this type of fake candle this last holiday, and they looked similar, and worked quite well, but were not actually made of wax for the outer shell. @pmarin 100% the ones I got are real wax. I accidentally scratched them and melted one that was too close to a real candle.
So the writeup tells us not only are these nice (fake) candles, but come in nice (real) boxes. So even if you don’t like the candles that much, you also get candleboxes.
