Kuhn Rikon stuff is usually pretty good. I have one of the can openers which came with a jar opener. The jar opener is great for my mom and the occasional jar from Aldi that was put on with more force than any container should need.
@brennyn Yeah that’s how I’d describe them as well. We have one of these, and despite it seeming like a gimmick it actually works surprisingly well. It’s definitely the cleaning aspect that stops us reaching for it more often. But in general it’s much better than I thought it was going to be.
@brennyn I had been considering this exact thing recently and I assumed it would be easy enough to clean. So I appreciate your review, saved me 20 bucks.
@fuzzmanmatt I have long resisted acquiring one of these. Fortunately, Meh isn’t selling them, at least not today. (But I can probably pass on it, if they find some in the future.)
@fuzzmanmatt@werehatrack I have a different version of the slap chop and its a hassle to clean, which is also what I see people saying about this pull cord dude.
@fuzzmanmatt I had an off brand version of this that worked great, but eventually was put out of rotation for being a b*tch to clean. I’m worried the same will happen with today’s deal based on some of the comments.
Meh knows that you don’t want these, that’s why they come with gift boxes. Just have them ready in case you forget someone’s birthday. Maybe MEH could provide 2 gift boxes, so the next person could regift it?
I have one of these as well, I’ve had mine for years. I use it to make egg salad, deviled eggs, and any time I need to chop up veggies. I find it easy to clean and I try to make sure to not get the rope wet. The blades are super sharp, so be careful when handling. Usually a friend will see it and think it is the best thing since sliced bread so I have bought them as gifts, so I just picked up a set. punitive-unwilling-pollution
I’ve had to do a lot of chopping for various gigs, and I’ve noticed that if you put any of these devices to the test, they will break eventually. Sure the blades will be fine but the plastic surrounding it cracks under pressure.
The only tool you should ever buy for chopping and dicing are these restaurant quality full metal stands where you slam the hell out of the food, and it drops into a pan underneath.
Those are usually around 80 dollars, but you’ll never have to replace it.
I pretty much only use it to dice onions, peppers, celery, etc. Much, much faster than doing it by hand.
Cleaning is the only caveat. The top part which pushes items through the chopping grate - bits of veg end up wedged between the “fingers” and have to be scraped out. Takes about 5 minutes, particularly when chopping celery.
If someone made one of these where the fingers could be separated from the top plate I’d buy it instantly
@PhysAssist Sure, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09PQWGJCS?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1
Very expensive but it will never break.
As far as cleaning goes, you might want to buy one of those thin brush tools, I just use a butter knife and floss the non-bladed teeth. For the blades, I just use one of those dollar store palm brushes that you’re supposed to fill with soap.
That’s the worst part of using a chopper, but you have to do that will every chopper, putting it in the dishwasher, even if it’s safe, will do nothing.
As far as I know, Kuhn-Ricon is/was a Swiss company known for quality. Also other Swiss products like Victorinox knives and pocket knives are well-known.
But pretty sure this product is made in China. I don’t have one, but based on this I’d agree with the review that the blades are good and sharp but the Chinese plastic parts and cord will fail after even a moderate amount of use.
@blaineg@Trinityscrew yep I have tried that several times, a few time the person runs into issues & can’t finish/ run out of money or will take he Money & run! Due to that simple fact I WILL NOT “invest” into any thing that is $25 us or more.
Mostly it is 3d models I can print on my 3d printer when it decides to work!
@Bumplepimp SPOILER ALERT:
I winced and got goosebumps and nausea when the finger got whacked off [and not in a good way].
It hit too close to home to the time I was demonstrating the safe cutting technique for our new kitchen mandolin with the ceramic blade to SWMBO and ended up having sliced the tip of my index finger completely off [thereby creating an approx. 10 x4-mm-thick ‘finger chip’], which in my professional opinion was not re-attachable, especially after it landed in the potatoes we were slicing.
The blade was so sharp, it took a few seconds before I even felt it, so initially it was the bloody potatoes that triggered our recognition of the injury.
SWMBO [despite being an RN] became nauseated and lightheaded from looking at the open [missing] tip of my finger.
No, we did not fry the finger chip with the sliced potatoes, it was given a decent burial in the trash- in a small red bag.
I’d definitely look towards the small electric food processor over on SideDeal today. Way more utility & much less waste. Of course, I’d say “Gimme a good knife & watch me smoke…” but that’s just me.

QVC sells Kuhn Rikon stuff on their cooking show. This looks to me like something that is a PITA to use and will fall apart shortly. Heckuva price if you disagree.
I got a version of this a few months ago and it didn’t take too long for me to break it. The cord no longer retracted back into the lid. It worked well for the time I used it but it was enough of tease to “food processing” that I broke down and got a formal food processor. I don’t use it a ton but it definitely comes in hand when you need the right tool for the job.
I am obviously not saying that these will break and/or lead you to a more expensive purchase. But based on my journey, THAT WILL ABSOLUTELY HAPPEN.
You guys are funny: “it’s cheap ~ it’s plastic ~ it’s gonna break sooner or later!” Doesn’t this apply to 99.3% of the c̶r̶a̶p̶ stuff that is sold here?
@bee1doll It really depends on the item. Choppers in particular break all the time due to you applying a lot of force onto a device that is just made of cheap plastic and metal blades.
It’s a problem that is larger than Meh. Most customer grade choppers use plastic, and they all break very quickly when you actually bother to use them often.

These work but they take long enough to clean that it only saves time over just using a knife if you are chopping like 90 onions.
@brennyn base and blade are dishwasher safe
@brennyn I’ve never noticed that. I’m usually just chopping veggies so I typically just give it a quick rinse when done.
@brennyn Yeah that’s how I’d describe them as well. We have one of these, and despite it seeming like a gimmick it actually works surprisingly well. It’s definitely the cleaning aspect that stops us reaching for it more often. But in general it’s much better than I thought it was going to be.

@fuzzmanmatt My thought exactly, you beat me to it!
So would you rather spank it, or yank it?
@fuzzmanmatt @werehatrack don’t ever get one they’re actually terrible and a waste of plastic and metal
@fuzzmanmatt @werehatrack I have a different version of the slap chop and its a hassle to clean, which is also what I see people saying about this pull cord dude.
@fuzzmanmatt Are you getting this, camera guy?
@bobthenormal @fuzzmanmatt @werehatrack
My experience with them [and similar devices] was similar.
@fuzzmanmatt I had an off brand version of this that worked great, but eventually was put out of rotation for being a b*tch to clean. I’m worried the same will happen with today’s deal based on some of the comments.
Good thing you get two because all my pull chops ended up breaking. They’re neat when they work, though.
@goldnectar Thank you for confirming my guess about the robustness of the product.
Meh knows that you don’t want these, that’s why they come with gift boxes. Just have them ready in case you forget someone’s birthday. Maybe MEH could provide 2 gift boxes, so the next person could regift it?
@Num1Zero It should come in nested gift boxes so that the regifting does not even require a full unpack/repack cycle.
@Num1Zero @werehatrack It would take quite a few to fill an IRK bag. Oh, wait, it says Regret right on it so maybe not the ideal gift package.
I really don’t need them, but… these are so cute
@agnesnutter They ARE - a bit dangerous, maybe, because they look like toys!
Too late to request a couple of these in my irk
?
@scilynt Too early to request in your next Irk?

Linkage to one or more that you would recommend, pretty please?

@mediocrebot Stuff of nightmares….
@mediocrebot @pmarin i think he got chopped by the pull chop

@pmarin
IDK… See comment from @tinkertime above. As usual YMMV.
These things are HORRIBLE, straight out of the box. I must have pulled that cord 100 times. I could never get it to start. I gave up and tossed it.
@Trinityscrew

@Trinityscrew I much prefer kickstarting.
@Trinityscrew Did you forget to fill the little gas tank?
@blaineg @Trinityscrew yep I have tried that several times, a few time the person runs into issues & can’t finish/ run out of money or will take he Money & run! Due to that simple fact I WILL NOT “invest” into any thing that is $25 us or more.

@Trinityscrew Did you fill it with butane first? Oh, wait, I’m thinking of those fuelless rechargeable plasma lighters that are banned on Amazon and cost $65 after the 70% discount…
https://www.amazon.com/Brightfire-Lighter-Windproof-Resistant-refillable
What prevents the spring loaded cord winder from getting gunked up when you wash the lid? And if you have one and never wash the lid, eeewwwww.
@Jonas4321 I hand wash the lid, I wipe it down and I don’t submerge it, which is how I avoid getting the string wet. It’s worked for me for 5+ years.

@thru_hiker
Fakespot says that the 4.8/5 stars by 88% of their reviewers gets a Grade B rating, as does the company- for what it’s worth, if anything…
The Cuisinart Mini-Prep 3-Cup Food Processor
currently being sold on Side Deal has almost exactly the same rating- except 77% instead of 88%.
But, I’d guess it might last a bit longer than the plastic one based on our experience with their products.
Just saying.
We need a demo
@skip demo-lition?
Those are always fun.

@ACraigL It’s widely known that Meh is the “starter drug” of compulsive shopping.
@ACraigL @pmarin Sometimes even the gateway drug to the hardcore stuff like MorningSave
@ACraigL @pmarin @werehatrack And in addition to that Morning Save some days you find you need a little Side Deal to go along with it.
You guys are funny: “it’s cheap ~ it’s plastic ~ it’s gonna break sooner or later!” Doesn’t this apply to 99.3% of the c̶r̶a̶p̶ stuff that is sold here?

Looks too much like a kid’s toy. Not a good look when blades involved.
@edsa

@mediocrebot Still looks kind of hearniful and ferrenful to me.
I don’t know what you all are chopping. I pulled my order history from QVC and I bought mine in October 2019. Nothing on mine has cracked or broken.
@tinkertime So I’m not supposed to use it for chipping tree branches? Should explicitly say that in the instructions.
@macromeh @tinkertime So, it won’t reduce worn-out brake discs down to a fine powder that I can use as feed stock for my laser-based 3D metal printer?
/image ratty-mighty-seahorse

These things still work better than “AI”.
@DrunkCat This statement pretty much applies to anything now. Except “liver detox” crap.
I feel like another disappointing AI last picture. Here’s my suggestion

@ybmuG Needs more blood.
