I saw these for $9 on the clearance aisle at Walmart back when going to Walmart was a thing. Did a little research and passed.
These are good for a bug out bag, but not like a cool water powered flashlight you could just break out for fun. If you’re using this, it’s because the s has htf.
There is an electrode inside the cell that is activated by water to produce a current. The electrode is depleted by usage so you rather quickly have a “fuel cell” that can no longer generate a current.
Reviews on Amazon not so good several people saying they only work three times should then you need a refill part one person said there are 12 year old dogs brighter than this light. It doesn’t run on water it’s activated by water.

Unless you’re in the Navy, you can’t plan on being around water when you have your next emergency situation. Can you pee on the batteries to activate them?
@unksol not necessarily. it could be as simple as getting a flat in the middle of nowhere at night, and AAA says it’ll be a few hours and the batteries to your usual latern have died. obv given what some have said this certainly won’t be useful for such a task but i can think of a few scenarios where you might not have water but wouldn’t be in dire straits. maybe there’s a power outage while my landlord has the water shut off for maintenance, but he waited until the last possible second like always to tell anyone so we were out of the house and didn’t fill up a “just in case” vessel beforehand, etc.

But I’m pretty sure you’re an adult and can make your own choices about water storage.

This is a really niche product that obviously doesn’t compete in the same space as your average flash light.
It’s not your daily driver; you’ll probably always have a better light and fresh batteries in your house.
Is it the light you stash in your trunk? Maybe. Here in TX, your average AA won’t last more than a few summers in a light in my trunk before it dies an oozy death. Still, easier to diligently check and replace those batteries once a year than to get this.
This is a real emergency light, for a situation where you won’t have access to mains power or alkaline batteries, and it’s too onerous to keep replacing fresh batteries.
Good for a stash in a summerhouse or cabin. Or in a boat your keep in storage. Or in a bug-out bag.
There are lots of crank flashlights that will perform better, but this meets a need for those who may be unable to crank one out, er, up.
@rabbidpanda That’s why here in the [often] frozen NE, mine are all in my door pockets for easy grabbing to use for whatever reason, and also to remind me to check the batteries [NiMH- usually], and recharge them as necessary.
Although we’re rocking some LiPO rechargeables [via mini-usb ?altho I always get the micro vs mini ? wrong] now, courtesy of Tractor Supply Co’s clearance deals.
They’re werry werry bright, and hold their charge relatively well compared to all the rest- or at least I hope they do…
A while back I picked up a solar/handcrank flashlight on meh. Its battery had failed, so it only worked while being cranked.
And I still think I would choose it over these water-activated lights that are barely more useful than a glowstick. At least mine gives me exercise and will have indefinite uses.
@PhysAssist Oh yeah! I have a few more and they sit in the window to stay charged up. They’re quite handy and I considered them a good buy. The one with a bad battery came that way, so it might just be a manufacturing defect, or maybe a wire came loose.

These seem interesting. But then you actually learn the details. The first issue is that once the power cell gets wet, it has a very limited life span, AND NO OFF SWITCH! I believe you can turn the light off. But the power cell will still be generating and using up it’s limited life span. So if you wanted to use these for say camping, by the second night, you will likely need to use a second power cell. So these can be useful if you want to keep them in the package until a true emergency where you lose power without warning to prep a normal flashlight. But there are better flashlights available to handle that case scenario as well.
Read the reviews and comments about these. They are NOT water “powered”, they are water ACTIVATED and have a very short lifespan. Some people only used it three times before the internal metal used in the chemical reaction burned itself completely out.
Still…a great idea made into a working product. I’d have guessed it’d be dimmer actually
I think I’d buy if the cell could be used more than three times, the price was quite a bit lower, of if I cared more about ‘doomsday’ preparation/had that bug-out bag I keep saying I’ll put together.

If these are as dim as the reviews say, it sounds like you would be better served by some cyalume lightsticks. Similar one time use.
