I feel like the nature of a ceramic mug’s construction (i.e., the bottom is concave so you’re basically getting a warm rim and whatever heat is able to transfer through an airgapped bottom) is such that these warmers never really work unless they get so fucking hot you’re not even comfortable plugging them in anymore. Someone needs to make one using material that conforms to the bottom of the mug while still facilitating heat transfer.
@dvermilion In fact, the last time I tried to use one of these mug warmers, the glass plate got so hot it cracked right down the middle…and the liquid within the mug was barely warm at all. Perhaps I got a lemon, but I dunno.
@dvermilion@PooltoyWolf Odd - I’ve been using the basic plug-in versions of these for decades. Metal heater plate, not glass, but with the same flat-to-convex interface - and I’ve been enjoying hot coffee for more years than I can recall.
@dvermilion@rpstrong No idea what I could have done wrong lol. The warmer is a Sharper Image branded one I picked up from Goodwill for $5, and the mug I was using is a very basic concave base ceramic coffee mug. Is it possible the USB power supply I was using provided too much current? (I didn’t think that was possible, or that electricity worked that way)
These ain’t Dr. Seuss mugs!! They’re just characters that he created on mugs!! This here though is a Jen-You-Win actualDr. Seuss Mug(on a mug, no less)!!
@MrGoodGuy When I was a child my mother would go with me to the library and ask for DrSeuss books for me. But being native Swiss-German speaking, she would ask for something that sounded like “Doktor Soiss” because that would be proper original pronunciation of the “eu,” at least according to her. The librarian would be very confused.
@Mandamm I also don’t get why the “warming” portion would be from the bottom and not the sides so the drink stays more uniformly-ish warm (like a thermos or cozy).
@Mandamm@pakopako@Mandamm@pakopako It’s like having a pot on an electric stove, the heat from the bottom does just fine.
My coffee sitting on my vintage Mr. Coffee mug warmer right now. The only drawback is it cooks the coffee onto the mug if you leave it sitting too long. But this one also turns itself off if there’s no motion for 30 minutes.
So, if not some higher current USB, the 16 W specified above is after conversion by an internal transformer (or worse, an unpictured external brick/transformer) from 110 VAC to some VDC.
meh,
What is the current/A or power/VA draw from the line?
@UncleVinny There are no wires pictured either. I think these disks pull warmth from quantum vacuum fluctuations. That’s the only answer I can think of if there’s no wires or batteries.
because if you think about it, George Clooney, who casually makes every character he plays George Clooney, has found himself in just as many (if not more) great works of cinema as Daniel Day Lewis, who painstakingly becomes every character he plays

@pakopako@rpstrong@werehatrack Not here. In Texas small towns, they don’t bother to get driver’s licenses. In the medium-size towns, I guess they still get them out of Cracker Jack boxes. In the larger metroplexes, most come out of mugging victims’ wallets.
And “what”? I guess Gooogle quit being your friend.
Among other things, DMV = Department of Motor Vehicles in most states.
This is one of the finest examples of what Meh is all about. It’s something you don’t need and might not really even want, but you see it and you have to have it. Exhibit A: me.

@Vee19 Nope. Mediocrebot beat you.
@Vee19 @yakkoTDI I ordered mine at 12:02, but didn’t bother to post anything about it.

I love having warm mugs.

ÌDK about this deal.
I’ve been told by several places that they don’t want to see my mug in there again.

Not me, someone else.

Maybe you’re doing it wrong?
@dvermilion I was going to say much the same. No photo of the mug bottom? So it’s probably not flat. And all of 6 reviews on Amazon? Meh.
@dvermilion @rpstrong No idea what I could have done wrong lol. @pmarin Seuss is an anglicization of süß [sooss, German for sweet], but I von’t say Mütter vas falsch.
@MrGoodGuy @pmarin As a math person, I was disappointed to learn the Houston Eulers were a football team.
@phendrick And now I am tempted to suggest that as a Chess Club team name for one of the local high schools…
“Can it make a margarita: No, but it can keep one warm! You know, for all those hot winter margs you make!”
I already have a factory original margarita warmer- all I need do is drink them.
Godsdamnit, meh, how am I supposed to not buy this? I’m trying to be more responsible here. JFC

I do not want a fire
UL listed these are not
Wait… What?!?
I just presumed some kind of safety testing, since, well, it’s electrical. Possibly incorrectly on my part.
Any other NRTL cert mark, e.g. ETL, CSA, TÜV SÜD, etc.?
@mcanavino According to the manual, here, it’s ETL listed.

So once again, even though they never show a cord or mention one, this warmer DOES have to be plugged in with a cord.

meh,

TIA.
How is there no USB battery charger built into these? What site am I on?!?!
@UncleVinny but it will make your phone nice and toasty just like it’s on a real charger.
@UncleVinny There are no wires pictured either. I think these disks pull warmth from quantum vacuum fluctuations. That’s the only answer I can think of if there’s no wires or batteries.
@gwrankin @UncleVinny Zero Point Modules (ZPM).
@blaineg @gwrankin @UncleVinny (they use wires)

“They”? ZPMs ?
@chienfou how else do they suspend your disbelief?
