I just honestly don’t care anymore. The cancer is getting the best of me, who knows how long I’ll have to live. Staying up until midnight for “fun” hoping for a chance at a bag of, ahem, random ‘stuff’ just isn’t worth it.
May the mehrethon gods smile upon all of you, because he certainly hasn’t smiled upon me.
@mexicantacos Thanks for checking! I’m okay. Just overwhelmed. This was my fun outlet, but I don’t exactly have a lot of free cash to spend these days. It’s all good, though!
Do you like to pretend like your phone is ice cream in a cone? Well this will help fulfill your weirdly specific fetish?? What the hell?! Sorry, I try not to judge.
They better have mass quantities of IRKs for making us wait this long since the last one. The bad news is that they sold damaged boxes of cookware yesterday that they would usually put in IRKs so that is a bad sign.
These are cool and I’m not hating, but I wonder if anyone uses these for directions, cause that seems dangerous to me (looking right and down to my cup holders). I realize some cup holders might be a little better positioned.
I bring this up in part because we are low-key looking for a good phone mount (but want it for the gps for sure).
@joelmw I actually have one of these and love it. I used to just plop my phone in the console, and it would roll around. I don’t like the air vent ones because I like my actual air vent to vent. I don’t look at directions as much as I listen, as I don’t like to take my eyes off the road. A few quick glances here and there, but I find this placement no more dangerous than any other phone holder.
We got the open box one to save an extra dollar or so from the Amazon Warehouse. My old vent clip would occasionally send the phone flying, this has never lost track of my phone. Easy to use, stays in place.
Also, y’all, in ancient days there might be months between the rando bags of shit, and we had one shot at midnight.
Not to mention that even with how frequent and relatively easy (not trivializing folks’ pain who have various obstacles; they’re not guaranteed and the struggle is real, but relatively easy) the IRKs have been, folks stay complaining about this or that. If I were the head octopus in charge, I’d have slowed up long ago.
I have one of these in black and I like it. The clasps (which are are easy to move if you want to readjust your phone) do not interfere with the charging port so I can easily charge my phone while I use the device to listen to podcasts and videos on the way to and from work. Easy to remove with the press of a button underneath and my phone stays in place with the lower bracket. Two years later and it still works.
This is like driving on hard mode; you have to look completely away from the road to see your nav app. Use both cup holders / no drinks for expert mode.
My older 4Runner has one of those pop out drink holder tray thingies that sits just below the dash level, so these would work pretty well for that, as the phone would be at lower windshield level as opposed to down next to your leg.
Does the IRK navigation advisor come with it? Not buying unless it is …
@stolicat Things sure have changed in the decades since I was a traffic reporter over Rugvillage. Back then, there weren’t traffic circles or satellite navigation systems.
There was a lot to report. When 3 year olds were driving, the rules of the road were always changing. The only constant rule, was that cats always had the right of way. It wasn’t uncommon for dinosaurs as big as cars to just appear at an intersection.
Sometimes, I flew the helicopter that took the cars to the hospital. One time, one of the drivers had left to do something with mommy. This left only one driver, yet the accident rate was insane. As soon as one car was on its way to the hospital, another car zoomed out of the Hot Wheels box and ran into a building.
I don’t think that even well designed roundabouts would have cut down on the accident rate. The roundabouts behind Irk are obviously not well designed.
We tried a cup-holder-mounted-phone-thing, but it was pretty useless. As noted by someone else, having to look that far away from the safe line of sight for that long is just not on. After a couple of other unsuccessful gadgets also didn’t do the trick, I bought one of the type that has a long bendable stem and a floor mount tab, replaced the long bendy part with an even longer bendy stem, and got the phone’s position up just above the backup camera’s screen, just barely below and a bit to the side of the normal driving line-of-sight. That’s perfect.
I got a similar product that works well on my Honda Fit. There are no other phone holders that I’ve found that work. The windshield holders work but reduce line-of-sight & they love to fall off when I need them most
There is a drink holder on the left side of the dash that is nearly a perfect location other than it blocks the vent.
The other drink holders, that I use to hold drinks, are too low for a phone but work very well for beverages.
My car is getting old, it’s a 2016, but it has built in GPS with a 9" screen in the dash and delivers turn by turn instructions to the HUD (Heads Up Display) including miles to the next turn. And my phone synchs via bluetooth so I can make calls or take calls and it reads text messages to me so I don’t have to take my phone out of my pocket, let alone use up a cup holder to hold it. It’s old but I think I’ll keep it for a few more years.
I actually think these are a great idea but the sit so low. I’d gladly pay double if the phone gripper was on a telescoping extension that enabled positioning it a bit higher. I’ve seen them on Amazon with 6 to 8 inch extensions, maybe I’ll try one of those.
Without the extra height, the viewing angle is better than viewing the phone in your lap, but not by a lot.
Anybody try the super cheap Dollar Tree vent holders? (the vent is in a great position in my car, but I’m in the Northeast and run the heat a lot, which isn’t great for the phone battery).
I am over the moon with these. Finally, a phone holder that works, stays in place and is actually at a sight level that won’t get me killed. I drive a 1998 Honda Odyessy, BY CHOICE! ( I don’t care for 1 minute , what you think)
I have been searching for a few years for a phone holder that stays put. Thank you MEH, from the bottom of my nonconformist heart

Doesn’t hold my beer very well.
@yakkoTDI That’s what the cup holders are for. You’re making it unnecessarily complicated.
I just honestly don’t care anymore. The cancer is getting the best of me, who knows how long I’ll have to live. Staying up until midnight for “fun” hoping for a chance at a bag of, ahem, random ‘stuff’ just isn’t worth it.

@guybrush01 is everything okay?
@mexicantacos Thanks for checking! I’m okay. Just overwhelmed. This was my fun outlet, but I don’t exactly have a lot of free cash to spend these days. It’s all good, though!
@guybrush01
I have major chronic health issues, and it sucks. If you need someone to talk to, feel free to whisper /reach out. Really.
You wanna see a Mehathon? Here, hold my phone.

But now where will I put my beer?

@joelmw you could get a cup holder attachment and place it ina more practical spot in your car, then put this in that.
@joelmw The magnetic air vent type ones work well for me. The one I got from Walmart (“Auto Drive Magnetic Air Vent Mount Phone Holder”) is $6.26.
@joelmw I actually have one of these and love it. I used to just plop my phone in the console, and it would roll around. I don’t like the air vent ones because I like my actual air vent to vent. @joelmw I have been pleasantly surprised by this Silicone Car Pad Mat / Slip Free Phone Stand https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07TZSC1P3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apan_glt_i_dl_PCVTT2HBXW2Z8Z87XYWS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

A headless Mr. Krabs.
Great something else to take my eyes off the road and look at.

@JT954 You had me sold, except that i don’t like red. Maybe someday they’ll sell them in a better color.
@JT954 I love mine too. It’s the only phone holder I’ve liked.
This is like driving on hard mode; you have to look completely away from the road to see your nav app. Use both cup holders / no drinks for expert mode.
I need a phone holder that comes with a cup holder.

Cuppa!
Will you sell vent mounted cup holders to even things out?
Wait the cars drive themselves everything is okay.
Next meh will be selling the old school cup holders that mounted in the window slot, to make up for one’s phone occupying the cup holder. Progress.

Excellence in Meh.
@curtw4 outstanding writeup!
Come play with us…
Honestly this might be my favorite write-up of all time!
Are these made from Bakelite? Or did you hire a guy to crank these out on a 3D printer?
My favorite line from the Details: “No installation is required” so I buy it and then-n-n throw it away!

@brasscupcakes
A friend broke the vent on his minivan with one of those. Your experience may vary.
These appear to still be buyable for some reason, in case anyone thought they missed out.
