Nice! So cool! I can put these in da meats on my outdoor grill, close da lid, and they won’t melt? Doesn’t seem possible.
I still have to buy a cell phone, but that’s just a formality.
How did you like that rack of lamb? I had mutton as a kid and hated it, and had lamb chops as an adult and loved it. That’s my total lamb experience, so i need some schoolin’.
@wew Not quite; the probes are NOT flame resistant.
From the user manual:
When using the Standard Meat Probe, be sure to route the probe wire where it will not be exposed to flames or temperatures exceeding 572°F (300°C). Probes should avoid temperatures below -22°F (-30°C).
• When using Pro Meat Probes, sold separately, be sure to route the probe wire where it will not be exposed to flames or temperatures exceeding 620°F (326°C). Probes should avoid temperatures below -22°F (-30°C).
• The Pro Ambient Probe, sold separately, should be clipped between two grates inside your grill, smoker or oven. Ensure the tip of
the probe does not touch the grates. Also, be sure to route the probe wire where it will not be exposed to flames or temperatures exceeding 620°F (326°C), and avoid temperatures below -22°F (-30°C).
@MrGlass there are also 2018 reviews that say it works with the iGrill app. The changes appear to be purely cosmetic but there’s a chance it might not work.
The older version of the app (which Amazon reviews say can still be found) was easier to use anyway.
@djslack@MrGlass I’m sure this works with the new iOS version of the app. It’s only the original rectangular iGrill that isn’t supported. I wouldn’t trust a random Amazon reviewer on this one.
@SSteve Its a “verified purchase” review so I doubt they had a different model. Perhaps its an issue with the android app? That would make sense, considering the fix seems to be loading an old app version - its rather hard to install an old app version on iOS but easy on android.
Either way, just trying to give people a heads up. If you want it go ahead and buy it, but I (and I’m sure plenty of others) would be pissed if I bought it and found out I needed to sideload an old unsupported app version to use this.
@MrGlass@SSteve@thismyusername I set two of them up with the Weber iGrill android app yesterday and it worked fine. There is and old app, but the new one exists and I didn’t have any problems with it
I have this, wearing the clothes of the iGrill Mini (this means it’s red).
Pros: accurate temperature compared to Thermapen spot reads, cool graph of your cook on your phone
Cons: Spotty Bluetooth if I go into my kitchen (literally one window and one wall from the grill), new version of app isn’t that awesome and doesn’t alert you if it’s disconnected.
For this price, it’s well worth it if you do any kind of long cook on the grill (long enough to want to walk away from). If you just do burgers and steaks, get yourself an instant read instead.
I just ordered the bigger one with two probes and the readout on the body from Morningsave, but I’m probably in for a pair of these as gifts.
@The_Tim “improvements” to the app are suspect. Lots of prettier looking but shittier to use interface “enhancements” like only bring able to set temperatures with a stupid dial. I wrote and complained when they did it, and they said thanks for the feedback and sent me a nice set of tongs for free. Whether they’ll listen or not I don’t know, but I got over it and still use my iGrill mini.
@The_Tim The old (iOS—I don’t know nothin’ ’bout no Android) app was actually much more functional. The new app was an obvious case of someone with no clue about software being put in charge of a software product. They’ve been steadily improving it but they’ve dug themselves such a deep PR hole that I’m not sure they’ll ever get out.
@Kerig3 I was being serious the whole time. I don’t own a baster but I like multi function kitchen items. Like my rice cooker/vegetable steamer. And since this is a thermometer I was trying to come up with some other use other than a kitchen thermometer. Multi use rules, think of your wife, girlfriend, husband, boyfriend, alien (maybe not), or whatever significant other you have, they are multi use and they rule. Thus multi use rules and things that only have a single use suck.
@craigthom which task doesn’t require it is a better question. It could be Stormy Daniels new video where she is the White House Chef and she does all kinds of things with the iDevices Mini Kitchen Bluetooth Thermometer with the President. Think is the probe bigger than his … tiny hands, or … well you get the picture.
@bleedmichigan at the risk of totally embarrassing myself I have used my kitchen probe taking my temperature when I couldn’t find my “real” thermometer. I have to say it was very accurate. (I compared later)
@Woody1 lol THAT’s your response? Being derogatory and snide because someone tells the truth about how lazy this generation is? I laugh my rear off at the ad on tv because the poor kid had to be rescued to change a tire. Can’t even change a tire. lol You all will die on the side of the road if there’s no cell tower. lol
Oh…and I’m a GIRL!
@AiraCobra how is using a thermometer lazy? i use a probe whenever i cook large pieces of chicken or lean pork and it’s great. rather than be lazy and just blindly cooking it until it’s inevitably overdone and having to cut it open several times to check, i’ve learned about the science behind why food tastes good and a probe allows me to cook meat to the perfect temperature, including resting it so it can be juicy and flavorful. using tools isn’t lazy, it’s smart.
My reply was not about the termometer itself as it’s actually useful but in part of the Bluetooth as in How hard is it to actually get up and go look at it or inside the fridge instead of sitting on the couch and looking at an app
@Woody1 I’ve had to do all three so you snide comment is more or less pointless as you seem to think you’re the only one who ever had it hard and had to do that.
@AiraCobra i didn’t miss your point at all. as i mentioned elsewhere in the comments (not expecting you to have read every comment, just reiterating) a major feature of this product is so you don’t have to keep checking it. i have one that beeps when it reaches the temperature i’ve set (it’s not used with an app). i’m not just “sitting on the couch” (although sometimes after being on my feet literally all day i do like to be able to sit down for fifteen minutes without having to stand by the oven watching a thermometer) i’m usually preparing the other parts of dinner, putting groceries away, sorting laundry, finishing up a project or some other thing. why waste time when you could be getting other stuff done?
as for the fridge thing, i don’t personally have a fridge like that or feel that i “need” one but there are times when i’m at the store and it would be nice to see if i already have something at home. (i do meal plan and clean out the fridge weekly, write a shopping list, etc, but sometimes humans forget to check something, or the store is out of whatever and you have to think up another meal to make on the fly.) not to mention i’m sure my mom or dad would have loved something like this when i was growing up for all the times we were told to stop staring into the fridge “deciding” - letting the cold air out and blocking the entry to the kitchen
So are these iDevices which sold it’s thermostat business to Weber or are these the Weber version? The iDevices version works great but the Weber app blows. They do work together but Weber is a grill company not a tech company.
@bleedmichigan you’re pretty much spot on. These are the idevices version. Seems like Weber bought idevices’ thermometer business, made them red instead of white and put out their own version of the app. They are definitely better at making grills than apps.
@bleedmichigan@djslackWeber screwed all the original Ducane grill owners when they bought the brand.
Those original grills had lifetime warranties. Weber was simply Brand collecting and killed the lifetime warranty for existing owners.
Thankfully there’s a third party parts supply. Our original grill still looks almost new but we did have to replace the briquet/flame deflector rack. Almost 30 years and running…
Weber: "We simply cannot alllow that kind of non-obsolescence to exist!"
@craigthom Ribs and Brisket are, well, Ribs and Brisket. Meat = Porterhouse, T-Bone, Rib-eye, Sirloin (sort-of), and any other steak that must be served with a charred exterior.
@djslack Ribs, Pork, Turkey, and Chicken are, well, Ribs, Pork, Turkey, and Chicken. Meat = Porterhouse, T-Bone, Rib-eye, Sirloin (sort-of), and any other steak that must be served with a charred exterior. A 165 degree steak = trash or shoe leather.
@j8048188 definitely yes as a smoker thermometer. It has the range for a candy thermometer but you’re on your own figuring out a way to clip the probe to a pot and have the probe reach down into the sugar. The probe is maybe 4" long.
@djslack … and that’s the thing that keeps this gadget from functioning as a camping hot water for showers kettle over the fire temp probe. Had hoped… it wouldn’t survive the fire heat surrounding the kettle.
@djslack@j8048188 The probe is on a cable, though, right? Couldn’t you use one of those black clamp paper clip things and hang the probe into the liquid, looping it for the right depth?
I almost forgot the biggest tip for this thing: do not submerge the probe in water. Wash the tip where you insert it into the meat, but do not get water in the back end where the wire enters the probe. This is the likely cause for erratic temperature readings that people complain about - the probe is not sealed well on the back end.
I have the original iGrill thermometer and love it. No overcooked meat on the grill.
After Weber bought the thermometer division from iDevices and came out with the terrible new app, they dropped support for the original iGrill. Luckily, I was able to restore the old version from my Time Machine backup. I left a review on the App Store expressing my disappointment in Weber for dropping support for a perfectly functional product and how it reflected badly on a brand I’ve respected for decades. They responded to my review and told me to contact support. I did and they sent me two new thermometers (because the original had two probes). So even though they aren’t good at software, I have to give them credit for supporting their customers.
The one they sent me is the version of this one that has a built-in display. They work great. For me the Bluetooth connectivity works perfectly fine even with my 3+ year old iPhone 6. I don’t think I’d miss the built-in display at all. I always use my phone to monitor the temperature anyway. I’d highly recommend these for the grill or the oven.
Seriously, for something that takes a long time to cook to a desired temperature (say, smoking anything or roasting a turkey) having a notification of the temperature with you allows you to go do something else and not worry over it.
Sure, there are other ways to do it, both higher tech and lower tech than this. There are even thermometers with WiFi connectivity so you can leave your cook completely and still monitor its progress.
@djslack Well, ok. I guess that I can see it if you have to leave it and can still monitor it, but still… I have one that I can just look at and it tells the temp. and for me, checking it is part of the fun. But, hey… to each his own! (thanks for the explanation)
@Tadlem43 i would prefer this work without having to use the app, as my probe is finally on its way out and just last night i was thinking of getting a new one. my current one is app-free and just beeps when it reaches whatever temp you set, which is great because i can do other things without constantly checking it. i’d say that’s the main point of devices like these, otherwise get one of the pens that doesn’t stay in the meat as it cooks and you can take readings as many times as you like
@jerk_nugget the last time my probes failed I bought a couple of thermometers from ebay shipped from China that cost about this much. I have been using the probes in my other thermometers. (yes, I have several… they’re sort of like earbuds… once you start buying them it’s hard to stop…)
@jerk_nugget the probes on this connect with a 1/8" tip and sleeve connection (only one black line on the connector–visible in the product photos). If that’s how yours are the probes should work.
I got a good probe thermometer on MassDrop because I’m currently too poor to justify a Thermapen, but this is still tempting. I’ve had bad luck with leave-in thermometers over the years, though. Also my iphone takes 25 seconds to load facebook messenger, so i don’t know if i want to have to wait 30 seconds to see my meat heat.
@andrd Instant read and this kind of leave in thermometers serve different needs.
If you check the Thermoworks site or subscribe to their newsletter you’ll see that they often have Thermapens on sale, especially on the original model now that the Mk II is out. Often open boxes or unpopular colors can be had for a third off.
@craigthom I’ve gone through a few leave-in ones before, and they were OK, but I don’t roast a lot of things and mainly use it to make sure my bread is at the right temp before I pull it out of the oven, which a leave-in probe is worthless for.
I have tried to read the threads to find a reason to trust Weber… I have an older I devices mini that used to be great. Then Weber showed up. Useless now. Nope.
I’ve been using the igrill mini for over a year and it’s been pretty great. Better would be a device that connects to wifi and thus doesn’t need to stay within range of one’s phone. But it does work.
I tend to stuff the igrill probe in a piece of meat, put it on the grill, put my phone on the counter in the kitchen, and then bring up the iGrill app on my Apple Watch. It displays the temperature updates it gets from the phone (possibly over wifi if they’re on the same network – am not positive), and thus a longer range and greater convenience is achieved.
Do keep some extra batteries around, it’s no fun to have it run out when you need to measure something that takes a while. When cold-smoking salmon I install a new battery and then tell the app I’m using an ambient probe (I’m not, but this enables a lower temperature range in app). I set an alarm if it registers over 90ºF, that way I make sure I’m not cooking the fish.
As far as I can tell, these look like the iGrill Mini with a different color housing.
@eonfifty If your batteries are properly stored in the refrigerator, you have no need to monitor their temperature. Anyway, it’s very hard to insert the probe deep into a battery without also causing a caustic leak and sometimes a fire.
Based on the kitchen thermometers from the same product line, I expect these will work fine with the current iGrill app.
Chicken thighs on the smoker for a gumbo cookoff in the morning. The skins are up top to see if they make good dog treats because they were all interested when I was skinning and seasoning them.
@wicksta Yeah, actually tried that one first. They give a little compatibility issue alert in that app for phones running Oreo, but I just realized that I’m a little behind on Android updates, that MAY have something to do with it?
@vdeogmer I want to take this time to publicly advise installing updates when they’re available. Connected immediately as soon as I finished rebooting my phone from installing Android 8.1.0.
Look for Weber iGrill. I had 30 minutes of my life taken away reading the instructions and I’m not certain the iDevices Connected app is legit when searching Play Store.
Looked at product on Meh, downloaded Weber iGrill, instantly detected thermometer. Works no problem at all.
One hint on iphones: if the igrill app refuses to see the bluetooth is actually on just toggle it off then back on and the app should pick up on the fact that it’s actually on.
I ordered the ‘two-fer’ and while I may be able to give them both away to people with “other / supported” cell-phones, they do NOT work with my particular Android device. “Yes” I spoke with Weber customer support, and they were apologetic, but confirmed “these don’t work with all devices - sorry”. Bummer; would have been the ticket for my back-yard smoker…

How accurate would this be orally? I only like kitchen tools that are multi purpose
@bleedmichigan I really think it would be hard to swallow. Maybe try a different orifice?
(I know, I know… TWSS.)
@bleedmichigan I can only imagine what other purposes you use a turkey baster for.
@Kerig3 I don’t own a baster no reason to suck Turkey juice up and stick it back on the Turkey. That’s what silicone brushes are for.
@bleedmichigan Now you’re being serious???
@bleedmichigan What kitchen task requires oral temperature to be taken?
@Kerig3 I was being serious the whole time. I don’t own a baster but I like multi function kitchen items. Like my rice cooker/vegetable steamer. You didn’t mention Bluetooth or not getting up at all; you only mentioned seeing what was in the refrigerator without opening the door.
If we interpreted that as an analogy for checking the temperature without opening the oven, it’s because that’s what you wrote.

@hchavers brisket and pulled pork aren’t worth a damn until 190, 195 or more. Dark meat turkey should be about 165, and so should chicken.
Steaks are way past done by 165 but they don’t take long enough to cook to need a leave in thermometer.
@hchavers I’ve definitely had ribs and brisket cooked to over 165° in Texas. Where do you live that they aren’t?

@j8048188 yes to the smoker and if you want you can dip it in water and it reads the temp pretty quickly.
@craigthom @djslack @j8048188 Aha - now I’m interested again - didn’t realize the plastic thingy was remote from the probe.
If that probe wire is 48 inches long then it might work nicely for our camping fire-heated shower water setup…

@SSteve our experience with Weber legacy product support is not in agreement: (they refused to send us a new grill)

Maybe it’s just because I’m, you know…old… but why do you need bluetooth for a thermometer??? You can’t just look down and read the number??
@Tadlem43 Not on this one you can’t.
@Tadlem43 What percentage of your Meh purchases have been things you need?
@Tadlem43 i would prefer this work without having to use the app, as my probe is finally on its way out and just last night i was thinking of getting a new one. my current one is app-free and just beeps when it reaches whatever temp you set, which is great because i can do other things without constantly checking it. i’d say that’s the main point of devices like these, otherwise get one of the pens that doesn’t stay in the meat as it cooks and you can take readings as many times as you like
@jerk_nugget there’s a good chance these probes would work in your other unit… All mine seem to be “universal”
@chienfou never thought about that! hm…now i’m tempted. (don’t worry, i know neither you nor meh is guaranteeing such a thing :))
@djslack oh awesome. i wasn’t aware it was that easy to tell they’re the same. thanks!

I’d be in for this if it connected to the bluetooth on an Echo. “Alexa, how hot is my meat?”
@borisgoodenough ignoring the obvious responses… even better,
@borisgoodenough

I’ve been monitoring the temperature of my feces.
Are these easy to clean?
@Bumplepimp Yep - a quick lick and you’ll be ready for the next round.
By the time it is on the plate, isn’t it too late to make sure your chicken was cooked to the right temperature?
“Weber iDevices Mini Kitchen Bluetooth Thermometer” This can be called a kitchen thermometer only if you keep your grill in the kitchen.
@dishee Where do you keep your oven?
Weber iDevices Mini Kitchen Bluetooth Thermometer. If there is a problem. I know a guy.
I would like a pony.
If these were also combination Thermometer/Stereo Speakers I would buy them…

Educational!
I have tried to read the threads to find a reason to trust Weber… I have an older I devices mini that used to be great. Then Weber showed up. Useless now. Nope.
I’m in…

As far as I can tell, these look like the iGrill Mini with a different color housing.

look this poor lady knows that its multi use.
Can I use these to monitor the temperature of my batteries?
/image batteries freezer temperature
@eonfifty If your batteries are properly stored in the refrigerator, you have no need to monitor their temperature. Anyway, it’s very hard to insert the probe deep into a battery without also causing a caustic leak and sometimes a fire.
FINALLY, something I actually wanted… woot woot!
@gwbaker If you set your bar low enough, Meh will eventually deliver…
Wtf, meh? These arrived today.
Based on the kitchen thermometers from the same product line, I expect these will work fine with the current iGrill app.
Chicken thighs on the smoker for a gumbo cookoff in the morning. The skins are up top to see if they make good dog treats because they were all interested when I was skinning and seasoning them.
won’t pair with my Google Pixel on Oreo.
@vdeogmer are you trying to pair through the app or just via Bluetooth settings?
If it’s through the app use the support link under the more menu to file a ticket, their customer service is usually pretty responsive.
@djslack Both. Went ahead and emailed them though, we’ll see what they say.
@vdeogmer I had a problem trying to use the iDevices app, but it connected fine with the Weber iGrill app. MIght be worth a shot…
@vdeogmer That’s if 8.10 is available - Verizon hasn’t released it for the S8 yet.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE IDEVICES CONNECTED APP!!!
Look for Weber iGrill. I had 30 minutes of my life taken away reading the instructions and I’m not certain the iDevices Connected app is legit when searching Play Store.
Looked at product on Meh, downloaded Weber iGrill, instantly detected thermometer. Works no problem at all.
Good catch on the app. Thanks for doing the legwork. I downloaded Weber iGrill and am happily using the thermometer to monitor my mash.
The one I opened works well.
