@RedOak You're kidding? I reconnected my modem 5 times, almost crying because I was gonna have to buy a new modem, and was about to call the cable company.
Fucking finally...waited 16 minutes to post this shit...dedication.
Welp here we are again...Tuesday. Again we find ourselves at the corner of impulsivity and temptation as we near that janky ass pawn shop on the wrong end of town. As we turn the corner our pocket begins to vibrate. The phone is ringing with an unfamiliar number. "Hello?" The voice on the phone is muffled but you can hear a faint yet familiar voice...."I see you...I see you." You begin to glance around and out of the corner of your eye you notice Twofer Tuesday sneakily peering out from her alley. You then notice that she has these fucking cameras set up everywhere. You pretend not to notice but very carefully reposition all of them so they are all staring at each other forming some sort of mystical fucking paradox. Twofer Tuesday emerges from the shadows and looks quite bewildered. Yo Twofer...don't try to fucking eagle eye us anymore...the government does enough of that bullshit. Buying cameras just gives them more of a reason to tap into our privacy. But...night vision is pretty bad ass...welp fuck in for a set for no fucking reason.
@legendornothing Speaking from experience, you may want to reconsider. One folly of youth is the desire to know what happens when you're not present with others - when actually there's a good reason certain shit happens when you're not around.
@lxlx they are pretty nice for quick to setup camera monitoring on a local LAN ... that is if you are on the same local network they let you have continuous streams... if you are using them remote they give you 5 min viewing sessions and then time out.
if you are using them as triggered monitors (that is on motion detection etc) they are not as good as say a dropcam... there seems to be a daily limit as to how many 'triggers' you can hit (i've never hit the limit as I am careful to set them up to not get false triggers) so that is a downside... an upside compared to dropcam is they are not constantly sending data (well I guess it's an upside if you are on a metered connection). There is no way to download the 'triggered' events... so you would need to record your tablet or phone screen with another video device to "save" the video. You have to monitor via the app, there is no web portal or local web page to monitor from.
Basically if you are using them as a 'baby monitor' type situation they are pretty decent... if you are trying to replace a dropcam or foscam they are not quite up to the same standards, but for the price not that bad.
@lxlx the router(s) I use them with only go up to 802.11n, so can't say really... sorry :(
Here is the thing... if you are considering these for a real security situation... stop now and switch to wired. Wireless security anything can be defeated with a handful of electronics and some leaky fuji batteries. :)
@thismyusername oh yeah 802.11n is plenty, from Amazon reviews it was hard to deduce whether by "modern" they meant anything over 802.11b, or anything with security higher than WEP, etc.
@lxlx I will say this... if the "easy" setup (aim the izon at a QR code in the app) fails once, just do the manual setup... it will save you much frustration and time.
@lxlx I have them all over my house and they work great. I use them for motion detection. No real limit as long as you narrow focus fields using the really good (and free) iOS app. I have never used the android app.
The setup is fine if you follow directions.
No problem with wifi. I used them with 802.11g, n, a, and now ac. All have worked fine.
Be careful with this IoT stuff -- especially audio/visual things. There are search engines that are built to find web-cameras that aren't locked down properly. Lot'sa perverts out there.
@us like that "nanny watcher" Canary thing? Pass. Just wait until your refrigerator is hosting isis videos and sending Nigerian Prince spam and auto-ordering crap from Meh.com and sending 5-year subscriptions of Modern Bride to your exes.
Yes IoT is a risk, yes you need to be smart about anything you put on your network... but to single out nest for a physical access attack seems odd to me.
Reading up on this sorta makes me happy, in my mind it allows for a path to get a custom firmware (well a pointer to an alternative at least) on a nest past its supported period. :)
I agree that security should be more well tested than it is now on all these products.
Regarding the NEST thermostat, the hack referred to in those articles appears to require physical access to your NEST.
Unless one makes a habit of letting untrustworthy folks into their home, not a likely scenario. But certainly good enough reason not to buy a used NEST.
@RedOak The hack referred to in those articles does not imply nor prove that physical access is required for all other hacks, especially the unknown ones, and control of the device is not required to observe data leakage/privacy security problems.
Just look at all of the apps that send passwords, IMEIs, GPS coordinates, camera access, screen shot, microphone access (Hello Google/Siri/Alexa) and more info in the clear on your mobile back to ephemerally resolved cloud services and distirbuted/exfiltrated to who know where.
Some of you sound like you work for Nest (google) doing brand reputation PR work. Nest is not immune from nor exempt from IoT problems. I used them as a popular amd familiar example. Apparently I was right.
@mike808 not a fan of Nest (don't like it making decisions for us) and definitely not a fan of Google. Simply observing what the couple articles I read above said.
BTW, I believe you were the one to bring up Nest and post a link that did not refer to Nest.
@caffeineguy those have supposedly been fixed... also noticed some oddness with their password reset but that seems to have been cleared up as well.
Of course with any of these "cloud"/server based cameras you have to assume anything sent up will become public record due to the way our govt currently ignores certain amendments. :)
@mike808 Don't freak out people on IMEI, that is no more than the hardware code (exactly like a MAC id - the hardware element). And it is broadcast, not hidden. It in no way has anything to do with the ICCD, CTN or the encryption of your data or voice going over a network.
What you should be concerned about is the permissions YOU give the apps on the devices you use. It's not a leak from any carrier, it is you taking a leak.
@mike808 we sound like we work for nest? You bring up nest on an article that has nothing to do with nest... sounds like you work for honeywell :)
Any system can be compromised when you have physical access.
Nest is the worst example you could have given here... they, unlike many companies these days, actually did think about security when designing their products... and reacts rapidly (these days anyway) to known issues.
It if fine if you hate google/nest, apple, microsoft or others... just when pushing an agenda don't go telling others they are pushing an agenda. :)
Got this one. I have FOSCAM and these are WAY easier and smaller. I agree the 10fps are low but hey... I'm not shooting a movie dorks just trying to see who keeps stalking me. Catch the guy and his dog poopin in me yard. See the person who keeps dropping dead bodies on my grass. Maybe catch that damn UFO that is always evading me.. DAMN IT ALIENS!!! YOU SO SNEAKIE POO
I was driving to the grocery store (don't ask) so it has to have been MY fault. I didn't check from my phone until about 15-18 minutes after midnight. DOH!
Got this last time it was up. When they work not bad, but they seem to reset, lose the picture .you have to reset them all the time. Fun to play with, but not to reliable if your using them for a serious reason. Like watching my cats sleep.
Okay, who has an electrical outlet on the ceiling of their front porch to plug this camera into? Who is going to spend the hundreds of dollars to have a proper GFI outlet installed for a $30 security camera?
@sjk3 Don't want to burst the pretty bubble but all cameras need power, however, you don't need 120v, GFI and a 15amp circuit breaker for these.
You can get low voltage 1A 5V to these any number of ways. Consider POE with a USB adapter. Can go 328ft that way.
Although I wired my system myself with audio, you can call SWANN and ask for local camera guy to wire them for you. They hook you up with professionals that will fish the wire through walls.
Question. I have senior parent who is starting down the road of dementia. long story short : They let some people in house they should not of. ( I was sleeping) Talked to parent, and for now he gets it.... not sure how long that will last.
Cops said full security overkill for where we live. suggest monitors and light changes.( we are in sm. town where many doors still unlocked and not much happens. the ones that came in are well known to cops and it has been dealt with) Also thinking of kid alarm for door so I can hear when it is opened in my room. Could these be set up in conjunction with that, so they go on and I can see who comes in ?
For those who haven't heard me say before -- I am completely not tech savvy.
Ideas, thoughts ? Alternative monitors suggested ?
@ceagee sympathies on the aging transition situation. And nostalgia for the no need to lock the doors small town - my parents lived in a town like that for 35 years.
An open-a-door alarm seems like a good solution without overdoing it. A bit of research required but one of those cheap hotel door travel alarms might do the job temporarily until a neater solution is found. A store door-open ringer?
@RedOak Thanks for the idea and kind words. Went through this already w/ my mom. Not ready to do it again. But no one ever is. You just do what you have to do.
@ceagee There are some cheap, non-tech/low tech, but reliable door alarms available at HarborFreightUSA.com. We put one on the basement door that we cannot see and [occasionally] forget to relock, and it has been very reliable.
These cameras are the sole reason I check this site every day. Finally, now that I have them, I can stop wasting my precious time, and get back to my awesome life!
Bought 6 Izon cameras from meh in December. Just caught my dog walker's boyfriend going through my home for valuables. Izon is worth every penny. Buying 4 more. Would have never known without Izon. Now it's a police case. They look like tiny blue tooth speakers. Dumb guy walked right into th camera. Also, the microphones are very sensitive. Was able to hear the guy rummaging through all my drawers.
@tirofiban Thanks, I have been wondering if I should buy these. My maid has been stealing from my sons room. I caught her going through rooms she was not allowed in. I need proof. I want to catch her before I fire her. I am sure I am not the first and not the only one that is why I need to stop her. That is great you caught him.
@Mellaine the night ones are good. I use them mostly in the daytime for the dog walker. The night mode is good, but if the camera is near a window, car lights can cause false motion.
@Mellaine I put mine in the rooms where the dog walker goes. Also, I have one upstairs in a room that has a great view of the upstairs hallway. Put them where you think it will do the most good.
Can't finish this, can you? There once was a man from New Park, who wanted to see in the dark. He bought this device, to scout out some vice, but......................................

Cameras will continue to operate through the end of September. The customer support desk has been closed and is no longer responding to customer requests.
Disappointing- but I always kinda wondered how long they were going to be around. If you’re dumping your product to places like this for pennies, how do you continue to provide the cloud service for free?
Crap, I have 4 of these and rely on them heavily when we’re at work or on vacation. Wasn’t there a way to hack them to push the video feed to a local server once upon a time?
And failing that, if they’re still on my local Wifi, wouldn’t they continue to work realtime but just not capture video to the cloud service?
@MrHappypants Do they communicate with anything in your house? Most of this kind of thing just use your wifi to communicate with your server.
If you app works when you aren’t on your wifi the same as it does when you are home, then it’s likely communicating with their server, not directly with the device.
I did a quick Google and didn’t find any open source firmware replacement.

Cant I just use a few old wifi enabled smartphones and an monitoring app?
@jmhsrv Yes, but that lacks night vision
@SkyyPunk The App Trackview does have night vision. It turns on the LED on your smartphone. It's just not IR so it's visible light.
Well that wasn't worth the 10-15 minute wait/server blip.
@RedOak You're kidding? I reconnected my modem 5 times, almost crying because I was gonna have to buy a new modem, and was about to call the cable company.
qvga and only 10fps? Meh.
SLOW SLOW SLOW! No Excuse Meh!
Really 18 minutes to post tonight
@AttyVette It was up at midnight. It just wasn't very responsive. Sort of like that hooker in my trunk.
@AttyVette All eyes on this deal tonight. Adjust your view if you don't see what I did there.
@yakkoTDI or Meh management, it seems.
@AttyVette lol
@AttyVette lol
@yakkoTDI Call girl!
@v when they're dead they're just hookers.
@v I like how you assume it is a girl. Or human.
@yakkoTDI
What is Irk doing to the cloud?
@thismyusername with the Chrome "Cloud to Butt" extension your post becomes
which is a far more pertinent question.
@armchair haha I would suspect it is revenge... but he has got the wrong guy... looking at you @matthew
Waiting for the OHSHIT REPORT.

DON'T YOU DIE ON ME, MEH
Was there a STEM IZON Fuku tonight or something? Dang... 18 minutes to access meh.com and another 4 minutes to clicky-click the face.
This sale of monitors needs monitoring tonight
@AttyVette who is viewing the viewers?
@mike808 I am. Now put your socks back on until you trim that toe hair!!
And we're back.....

@studerc Well worth the wait :-)
Let's do the time warp again!!!
What's up with the big URL in the middle of the screen?
@heartny
I dunno but this one cracked me up:
@thismyusername Ah yes, I've used that site before. I think for Fuku 4.
@thismyusername that's hilarious, everyone knows http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ is by far the superior site
Neat... you get two -- so you can see in stereo.
Don't you think the "-00"s might just be a placeholder for something Spectacular??
Wow, QVGA at a blazing 10 frames per second.
I am whelmed.
@jaburg don't be dundant.
@mike808 Nope, just gruntled.
I really want to buy one and just monitor my family without them knowing

As it is for us all.
@MrsPavlov Parents don't have sex; sister is fairly naïve
Anybody who bought these before have any feedback?
@lxlx Amazon's site has 59 reviews.
@lxlx they are pretty nice for quick to setup camera monitoring on a local LAN ... that is if you are on the same local network they let you have continuous streams... if you are using them remote they give you 5 min viewing sessions and then time out.

Amazon reviews seem to bring up poor Wi-Fi connectivity and alleged lack of support of latest 802.11 stuff, any truth to that?
@lxlx the router(s) I use them with only go up to 802.11n, so can't say really... sorry :(

@mike808 What's that article got to do with nest?

Plenty. Its about IoT and the manufacturers offering no security features for users, only their revenue stream and intellectual property.
@mike808 ahh but that article had nothing to do with nest...
http://www.eweek.com/security/nest-thermostat-security-risk-disclosed-at-black-hat.html
Yes IoT is a risk, yes you need to be smart about anything you put on your network... but to single out nest for a physical access attack seems odd to me.

@Mellaine Well, where are the links for us- err, those pervs...
@PhysAssist shodan.io has links to all sorts of stuff. Unsecured databases, exposed IoT devices, etc.
@us Found this article about the flaws in Stem Izon cameras: http://www.decryptedtech.com/news/embedded-devices-come-with-embedded-flaws-izon-ip-cameras-open-to-attack

This is so sucky!!! I have three and love them! I almost bought 4 of the night view ones when they came out, but decided not to…Whew!
@craigthom Yup, think they’re useless then! Time to get shopping for replacements
