@Pavlov Fun fact: whatever you’re lighting has to fit between those two metal prongs. You’ll only be able to use it with rolled goods. If you use glass, it’s probably incompatible.
@Pavlov I’m probably about a decade younger than you (?), but thanks to a childhood spent listening to Chuck Schaden’s Those Were the Days I absolutely hear the phrases I typed above in Don Wilson’s voice.
@shahnm don’t see why not, they’ll light pretty much anything as long as the “beam” can reach it. plenty of space for the metal-style sparklers to light. The paper-style ones should work fine too.
@shahnm I used mine to light several fireworks fuses this summer, but didn’t try any sparklers. As long as the tip of the sparkler fits in the narrow gap between the electrodes, it absolutely will light.
@shahnm@Tin_Foil@ProfessorGenki@ruouttaurmind It will light them, but as someone dear to me discovered this summer (which is why I’m not identifying them), sticking a metal wire into an electric arc is not a good idea.
@shahnm I think it was more of a minor pain that brought a sudden moment of clarity, but I wasn’t around to see it happen, just spoke to the person immediately afterwards as they explained how they suddenly realized their mistake.
Hmm, I kinda want one, because fuck it, but I don’t really want to pay for two… Someone send me your spare and I’ll send you an indeterminate amount of currency.
most of the amazon reviews are ‘i received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest review’ (to be fair, several negative reviews are also for discounted products)
@mwarren i came back to this comment because i found an exmaple today of where those fake review spotting sites come to vastly different conclusions.
there was a shiatsu neck massage pillow on amazon via slickdeals.net for $20. it had overwhelmingly good reviews, but mostly from people who got it free/discounted.
Reviewmeta.com acknowledged that over 90% of the reviews were for discounted/free products, unverified purchases, and had lots of keyword triggers for false reviews, but still thought the adjusted rating was 4.7/5. http://reviewmeta.com/amazon/B016ZGVHSG
@mjs597 Less than $11 on ebay, if you don’t mind it coming on the slow boat from China. I got a dual arc model coming next month for $10 and change after reading through the product thread and changing my mind on the two pack.
I’m trying to find some possible use for these things (aside from the obvious ones, which don’t apply to me). I really want one, but in my case, this seems like a somewhat cool and overly complicated solution to a problem I do not have.
Amazon reviews say the safety doesn’t work. This means you can have it turn on in your pocket even if the lid is closed.
Remember kids, if the Amazon reviews say “This product was provided at a discounted price in exchange for my honest review.”, skip it! They aren’t really unbiased if they got them for a discount.
@j8048188 I spent about a month reviewing products for fun… Of course, I used the guidance that 3 stars means “It’s OK”, so I pissed off a lot of peddlers of cheap chinese goods. I especially liked giving folks a hard time for grossly exaggerating technical specs.
@j8048188 As an Amazon “top reviewer” I do remind you that -with the exception of Consumer Reports, who buys their stuff- EVERYTHING reviewed is provided somehow. Do you think photo magazine writers buy the stuff? No. Software reviewers? No. Wine reviews? Hell no! Car reviews? Clothing reviews? Appliance reviews? So, do you trust anyone’s opinion?
@currawong I’m with you. I bought one of the dual-arc versions a couple months ago. I don’t smoke (or blaze) but I thought it was interesting so I got one to see what kind of havoc I could wreak. My only criticism: the space between the electrodes is quite narrow. If one was planning on using it to light cigarettes it would be a bit of a challenge since the electrodes are about 4mm apart. Still, I haven’t found much I can’t burn with mine.
As a trouble starter, punkin’ instigator I really need a reliable firestarter, a twisted firestarter, that is why I love this SaberLight Rechargeable Flameless Plasma Beam Lighter!!! When I am being the pain you tasted, fell intoxicated I don’t have time for a lighter that can be blown out by the wind… and this SaberLight Rechargeable Flameless Plasma Beam Lighter works great in any self inflicted mind detonators!!!
In for 4 packs of 2 in space gray, and of course I got vmp, it’s a real prodigy when it comes to saving money on shipping!!!
Would’ve bought one (err, two) but they seem more designed for smokers than people who just love setting things on fire. I’ll stick with those old-fashioned long bic lighters from the grocery store for my arson-related needs.
@awk As a lover of setting fire to stuff, I too am simultaneously drawn to and repulsed by the limited nature of these lighters. I’m going to go light a candle with a wooden match right now!
@awk I looked up some er, review videos, and they seem to have no problems torching stuff that doesn’t fit in the gap. The arcs are drawn to things close enough to touch the tip or side of the lighter, which can be held flat side down to keep the lid out of the way.
I already own one of these that I purchased at retail from Amazon. The thing is pretty awesome. It quickly and easily lights anything flamable, as long as part of it can fit between the electrodes. It’s definitely an attention getter, I assume even more so if you were a smoker and used it (I am not.) I’m not sure how many lights a full charge gives, but it’s a more than adequate number. The build quality is good and the joint feels solid. The outdoorsman in me likes how (along with a biolite camp stove) I can make fire to then make electricity, which I can then use to make fire again. This is now my primary firestarter when I go camping.
However, I have noticed three negatives about it. The first is inherient to all plasma lighters - they make a fairly loud, high pitched buzz when active. It may or may not bother you. The second is that with the cap closed pressing the button still activates the lighter. Some other plasma lighters have a disconnect so when the cap is closed the button doesn’t do anything. Finally, the cap doesn’t rotate completely out of the way like a zippo, so some things are difficult or impossible to light.
The Airlines don’t know it yet but this is the next banned item on flights. I mean come on the Samsung Galaxy 7 was banned and recalled because it may blow up in flames. This lighter blows up in flames even when you’re not using it.
A lighter that is truly empty (absolutely no fuel residue or vapors) is not regulated by the DOT as a hazardous material. There is no limit on how many empty lighters you may carry; however, carrying multiple empty lighters could cause delays at security screening checkpoints. The FAA recommends that passengers pack empty lighters in checked baggage accompanied by a note explaining that they contain no fuel.
@mwarren I was going off info. from @RuralNinja where he states that the button activates even when the top/cap is down. That would make for some “hot pockets” and can just imagine the thing lighting up in an overstuffed suitcase.
Woot!'s been trying to flog these things seemingly forever. I’ve no interest in them, as I love my ever trusty Zippo as well as keeping some Bic lighters, in nice metal covers, handy in my pocket, and EDC bag. Yes, I’m one of those awful smokers.
Cool little doohickey but i dont smoke and i find myself using lighters or matches maybe 4 or 5 times total any given year so i think just buying a big box of strike anywhere matches is fine enough for me. I have mild safety concerns anyway.
@thismyusername instead of going by quantity, it goes by how quickly it sells. Since there’s a huge influx of people at midnight, it triggers quickly. I don’t know why they don’t just use quantity.
Do I have to do anything special to get access to the 4:00PM thing as a VMP? Do I just hit “purchase” on the front page or is there some secret VMP place to go to get it?
How does the order work? When I hit buy do I enter a queue? Because this is not the first time I do that and I get a Oops, something went wrong try again…then they’re sold out…
@pyro when they’re this popular, it’s hard to buy it. That’s why you end up getting the error. They might only have 40 at 4pm and 200 people trying to buy it.
@RiotDemon sure I understand, just wondering about site architecture. Do I enter a queue or is it just a free for all where people closer to their AWS(?) have 1ms less of a ping and finishes the process first. Lol
@cahuston Well, don’t blame me - /buy didn’t work either. Chalk it up to only 58 left. Who are you lucky 58? Show yourselves so we have a face at which to direct our rage!
@salaosantiago I haven’t gotten in on any of the VMP held items. Scouts would have loved these. Didn’t get the email about the fuku, if it weren’t for bad luck…
Sold out after my 4pm-on-the-dot purchase didn’t go through. But I am glad, I probably shouldn’t have bought them anyway. I wanted them for my Star Wars obsessed spouse, though neither of us smokes anything.
Way to waste another one of my afternoons meh. Why even bother to tell people you’ve put some aside for 4 p.m. when I place an order at exactly 4 fucking p.m. and it loads for 6 minutes only to tell me they’re all sold out? You guys either have a shit website or your heads up your fucking asses. Don’t even fucking bother putting any aside for VMP if you’re not going to have any fucking there to withstand the first 5 Seconds of ordering. Idiots
@timstm no, i don’t care about lighter - I could have gone online and ordered for a few dollars more. But I was told they had more and sell at 4. I order it looks like it’s going through. And then minutes later it says ALLLL GONE. What I am mad about is I really didn’t want my time wasted once again by this bullshit “pause” feature. I ordered on the fucking dot. This is perhaps the 5th botched order and they don’t give a solitary fuck. It’s fine. Done using this place. I can’t rely on anyone at meh and their orig model has been perverted. Cya!
Why don’t you give the people who showed up at the website earlier in the day the fucking chance to buy them wouldn’t that make sense the people that actually made the effort to get there on time why don’t you put some aside for them instead of holding them all until some arbitrary point in the date so it can be a clusterfuck and waste of time
I thought the damn time zones made it set to central! WTF! I missed them last night at 11:08, this morning too because I have kids. What’s the damn point when VMP keep getting ripped off!
@Lydia It’s a novelty item, so alot of people wanted them in their hot hands. There have been a lot of complaints of the new system. I’d be pissed too if it was an item that I wanted/needed.
@growyoungagain… Thanks! It wasn’t a “make my life” deal… I just wanted them for presents… and am not impressed to know that there were only 58 available at 4:00 pm.
Why hold them for the “elite” if they’re just gonna tick them off when the “elite” set their alarms and try to buy them?
I’d really rather they just say that they’re “sold out”.
“You missed it.”
Not… we LOVE YOU for your dedication to us… we’re saving these… FOR YOU!!!

I almost bought one of these, but I was wondering how practical a laser lighter would actually be for cigarettes. It doesn’t seem to me like it would light well.
Anybody know what the deal is with the charging light? I plug it in and get a steady light.
People asked this question on Amazon and got contradictory answers. One says the light is on when charging, turns off when charged. Another says that it’s flashing while charging, steady while charged. So I don’t know if my steady light means it’s charging or charged.
The thing came with no instructions.
It’s pretty cool! Some of the Amazon reviews suggest that pretty soon the cool finish will bubble and flake off and/or the thing will completely stop working, so let’s hope I have better luck than some of the reviewers.
Like mine although a little difficult to light some of my candles – it can be done but a lot of my candles have three wicks so once you light one you have to be careful you don’t burn yourself using the lighter to light the other wicks.

Finally, 4:20 accessories!! And with the two-fer, I’ll have one in reserve when I lose the other!
@Pavlov Fun fact: whatever you’re lighting has to fit between those two metal prongs. You’ll only be able to use it with rolled goods. If you use glass, it’s probably incompatible.
@tizio psh! ill be plasma blasting my hemp wick!
@tizio I just hit the comments to see if this was bowl toking compatible. Definitely blunt sparking suitable.

@Pavlov Buy yourself a lighter!
@eeterrific I was a child in the 60’s and LSMFT was everywhere.

@eeterrific So round, so firm, so fully packed…
so easy on the draw…
@Pavlov I’m probably about a decade younger than you (?), but thanks to a childhood spent listening to Chuck Schaden’s Those Were the Days I absolutely hear the phrases I typed above in Don Wilson’s voice.
@Pavlov LSMFT Lucky Stikes Mean Fine Tobacco or our 5th grade version, Loose Straps Mean Floppy Teats
@mossygreen This is how I know the phrase… geez looney tunes cartoons are horrifying.
“Plasma. Dog Plasma.” Who’s old enough to get this obscure reference?
@huja I think of that every time I hear the word plasma. Every single time.
@katbyter You get a gold star. Yes you do.

@conandlibrarian well, you see, when a positive electrode and a negative electrode love each other a /whole/ bunch…

no model number, no sale.
Can this be used to light sparklers?
@shahnm Wondered this sort of thing myself.
@shahnm don’t see why not, they’ll light pretty much anything as long as the “beam” can reach it. plenty of space for the metal-style sparklers to light. The paper-style ones should work fine too.

@Tin_Foil I bought one of the dual-arc variety on eBay for $12, free shipping.

@RiotDemon The electrodes are about 4mm apart, so narrower incense sticks, no problem. Larger cones might be an issue.

@mjs597 $22. You can just throw the other one away.
@mjs597 Less than $11 on ebay, if you don’t mind it coming on the slow boat from China. I got a dual arc model coming next month for $10 and change after reading through the product thread and changing my mind on the two pack.

@mike808 I’d love to see the Amazon reviews of Congress! Nobody gets that for free.

Woo! Thank you, Meh, for pausing the deal and stopping me from making a dumb purchase!
Would’ve bought one (err, two) but they seem more designed for smokers than people who just love setting things on fire. I’ll stick with those old-fashioned long bic lighters from the grocery store for my arson-related needs.

@RuralNinja Thanks for the tip about the top not rotating- I was thinking about getting these for jar candles but I bet this won’t work.
Well apparently I should stop selling these at the flea market for $8 a piece. Meh.
@CKizziar You could buy them here, then sell them for $8 each & lose a fortune.
@gertiestn You’re right of course! Why didn’t I think of that. Man I can’t wait for the deal to unpause now!

@uscpsycho No, not efficiently. The electrodes are too close together to do a good job.
Dropped the analogs seven years ago. Still got a couple of Bics around just in case. I’m betting these won’t hold a charge seven or more years.

@twofivefive there is no point. But then again, this is a group that’s whole motto is “meh”. So what did you expect? Professionalism?
@twofivefive grrr i screwed up but it’s all meh’s fault i couldn’t get one
Arg. I set my phone alarm for 4:00 for the “reserve”.
Ordered two at 4:01. It errored… then said, try again.
Then, sold out.
Grrr…
@Lydia It’s a novelty item, so alot of people wanted them in their hot hands. There have been a lot of complaints of the new system. I’d be pissed too if it was an item that I wanted/needed.
@Lydia I set my alarm for beforehand. 4:01 is too late.
Come. Get them.
Ha!
@growyoungagain you’re no longer an east coaster in my mind
@Lydia you can achieve that by checking in, like in the old method, once at midnight each day.
if it happens to say “ON HOLD”, just interpret that as “SOLD OUT”
@Yoda_Daenerys What coaster am I, and does it have brakes??
I ended up ordering a different one on eBay. I’ll get it in 2-3 weeks when I’ve forgotten about it. Hopefully my incense fits in between.
@Barney and @narfcake
@ELUNO it’s so shiny and colorful and pretty.
They gave us two so we can duel wield!
keeeeeesssssh VUUUR VUUR VOOM

I almost bought one of these, but I was wondering how practical a laser lighter would actually be for cigarettes. It doesn’t seem to me like it would light well.
@lucasoutloud oh, but it is not a laser, it is plasma (crowd roars), but you should really stop smoking anyway
@Yoda_Daenerys Quit smoking? Let’s be realistic here.
@lucasoutloud yea, i hear ya, if someone had offered $22 for a quit smoking initiator, you’d have been all over that offer!
@Yoda_Daenerys I actually quite enjoy smoking so I would not be so sure.
@lucasoutloud well then you defs need one of my extras
So I got mine. They melt like anything but metal. Doesn’t even heat up. Weird
I just got mine. These are awesome!
Got mine. Played with one. Pretty damn neat.
Try blowing air on the arc to make the little zaps dance, or waving the device quickly like a sword to make it sound really neat.
@edheil Mine seems to have the light on when its charging and off when its fully charged.
@Saffer49 Yep, that’s what I’m seeing too.
@Saffer49 ditto
@Yoda_Daenerys Same
i have so many things on my desk to try to light, but i’m afraid of the
consequencesresults.i’ll go play with the cats and the lighter instead
Really good and amazing price
Like mine although a little difficult to light some of my candles – it can be done but a lot of my candles have three wicks so once you light one you have to be careful you don’t burn yourself using the lighter to light the other wicks.
@AttyVette you need some of these:
does anyone have a reference to the TSA language stating this can be carried on?
