16 jan 2018 boat of the day
16As suggested by @f00l the boat of the day is kon tiki. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kon-Tiki_expedition
This is a raft that was built to show that early peoples could have sailed from South America to Polynesia.

There is also an excellent book written about the voyage of the recreation vessel titled Kon Tiki that was one of my favorite books ever. I remember my dad suggested it and I expected it to be lame and then loved it .
@CaptAmehrican Was Papillon written/came out around the same time? I used to be confused between the two when I was younger.

Thx!
Heyerdahl is one of those people I would have loved to have shared lots of dinners with.

@therealjrn - Well, they both had a plan, a raft, and a yen to travel, so there were definite similarities. However Kon Tiki came out in '48 and Papillon in '69.
@aetris Thanks, I never was the brightest penny or the sharpest pencil. But I grew up in a household filled with books…I like both stories.
@therealjrn - I read Papillon and was fascinated, but I don’t believe I ever read Kon Tiki. I did see the film, but I get it confused with those Jacques Cousteau adventures.
It needs a motor.
@daveinwarsh
Then the crew of the original design needed very long lives.
Or cultural contact with Motörheads.
I was once known for sailing the infinite(?) Seas of Swiss cheese aboard a Gypsy.
Meh. What would I know anyways?
