I’ve rarely seen these but they are ideal for motion sickness, especially for children. Strong ginger flavor but help2 if you chew before motion sickness gets started.
@thechinglish Um. The serving size is two candies. There are 12 servings per bag (24 candies total). Or, with two bags (as pictured), 48 individual candies.
Now, maybe they do mean 48 bags of 24 candies each. But it seems odd they’d have 16x as many for only 3.125x the cost.
And it’s especially odd that the “pack of 48” gives a price per count, while the pack of 3 gives a price per ounce.
@djslack I suppose there’s one sure way to find out… but this seems like an Amazon mislabel, especially given the prices per ounce of the rest of their items.
@bluebeatpete The two things I remember most from the one time I tried these: They have a VERY strong ginger spice to them, and they will try to remove any tooth they touch.
@gertiestn OK. Just trekked over to side deals &discovered
Strawberry Jalapeno Hot Sauce. I figure I should spring for a couple bottles & spread it on these ginger chews & see if I can take over the world.
@gertiestn that hot sauce is way hotter than I thought it would be for being strawberry jalapeño. It has habanero and peach in it, and honestly, it isn’t a very flavorful hot sauce.
I love these things. I buy a bag or two whenever I go to Trader Joe’s. Sometimes it’s not easy to get the paper wrapper off the chews and they seriously stick to your teeth, but it’s worth it. Good for dizziness and tummy aches.
@bgammill Aww, i setters! The first rescue my late husband & i adopted together was a retriever/setter mix, & she was the most lovable goofball! And one of our later rescues (a mix of unknown origin, pictured above) came with the name Ginger, but we wanted something to go with her sister’s name, Ellie (adopted at the same time). The decision was made on the ride home when she threw up on me: Emma. You medical people &/or fans of words with Greek roots might appreciate it. RIP, Emma, you were the best 50-lb+ lap dog ever!
@bgammill@Kyeh Sorry, I’m way behind on replies, as usual… i was referring to “emesis.” Talk about a euphemism, that’s one where the medical term sounds so much better than the layman’s!
@buttermaker I remember these candies being pretty tough, do they get softer when you bake them, or do you just chop them small enough that it doesn’t matter?
I’ve tried most of the brands but it’s been awhile since I had these. They claim more ginger flavor but they all seem similar. I usually pick up the PoP ones at Grocery Outlet which just had 4 oz bags for 99¢. They have a couple more ingredients with virgin coconut oil + lemon. $2 for 5 oz isn’t that great a deal for me.
@babakool I just checked the package of my recent purchase and they are of the Lemon flavor variety… hence the lemon ingredient… derp! Regular ones won’t have the lemon.
@Bloodshedder But… but altoids are mints, curiously strong mints, but mints nonetheless.
These guys however are ginger chews, with out a hint of mint.
With great respect I don’t see how one can compare the two. Unless that is to say because they both are used orally they can be compared, in which case there are lots of things these can be compared to… like cough drops, or applesauce, or mayonnaise even. I know for a fact these are nothing like mayonnaise.
@Bloodshedder I just bought a case of ginger delights which are probably similar- hard non-sticky ginger. The come with other flavors added. I love them but they are super strong. I hope I love these too.
@Bloodshedder There was a company, selling here in Colorado anyway, that had pastilles they sold in tins like altoids and ginger was one of their flavors have to swing by vitamin cottage and see if they’re still for sale. Also did mint and liquorice
@Bloodshedder@riggscm Altoids also makes a cinnamon flavor. No mint there, either, unlike the Penguin caffeinated cinnamon mints which (poorly, in my opinion) had both cinnamon and mint.
So you get 12 bags with 12 pieces in each bag? I misread it at first thinking it said 12 pieces of candy for $24. Even so you can make this candy very cheaply, and it’s very easy. Grated Ginger, sugar, and a little tapioca starch boil until it reaches medium candy ball stage. Then cool a bit and knead and shape into candies. I personally would drop by spoon onto parchment.
@christylynh if you drop them on small squares of rice paper, or form a long cylinder, wrap it in rice paper and cut into pieces as is traditional in Asia, there’s no need to peel them later
@christylynh No. You read it wrong again. It’s 12 bags of 5oz. Each 5oz bag contains 12 servings. Each serving is 2 pieces. So, each bag has 24 pieces. That’s 288 pieces. As for your ridiculous suggestion that people could easily make their own, you have no idea what the actual recipe for these is. Making candy is basically conducting a chemistry experiment. If you don’t get the ingredients and temperatures just right, you get wildly different results. I can guarantee you won’t be able to just guess and make anything like these at home. You can probably make a sticky glob of ginger-flavored sugar, but you can’t make these. If you could somehow get the exact ingredients in the exact amounts and follow the exact recipe, you’d still have a giant glob of sticky goop that you’d then have to portion out into 288 equal pieces and individually wrap them so they don’t clump and melt together into one giant sticky mess again. A very small percentage of the population has the time, skill, patience, ambition, etc. to make their own candies. That’s why large companies decide to make them in mass quantities for sale to the general public. If you can, as you suggest, somehow make these easily and cheaply at home, I’d suggest you start your own business selling these. You’ll be rich in no time at all.
@warpedrotors It’s not that complicated I actually have been making these for very long time for myself. I barely measure anything I grate some ginger More if I want it really strong less if I don’t. put in a cup or two of sugar add water put in a half a cup more or less of tapioca starch and boil until it is at medium ball stage then let cool for a bit then need it so that it gets lightened up and some air in it and then cut it into pieces. It’s not rocket science. It’s making some candy. Yes some people would not want to go through the trouble that’s why companies make them. But for ME I enjoy cooking and making things. And I’m pretty sure you can find recipes online where you just measure out the ingredients listed and cook it.
@Cindyloohooo@warpedrotors There are more recipes for candied ginger pieces than for the chewy candy, but both are out there. Google is your co-conspirator.
@Cindyloohooo my point is you’re not making these. You’re making a ginger candy that is undoubtedly different from these. Most people, probably in the neighborhood of 99% of the population, would rather buy these than attempt to make their own version. I applaud your efforts and abilities, but this isn’t one of those things where everyone should just make their own at home.
@Cindyloohooo@werehatrack I would make candied ginger before even dreaming of trying to make these, as I’d assume most other people would. Now I actually want to try it. Someone bring me some ginger.
@gerri8564 me too. I actually love the Super Strength which are more potent and not as gooey/messy. I can chew an entire bag in an afternoon if I am not careful. These are great to open your sinuses when congested as well. I like better than most cough drops.

Found an old unopened 1.6 oz box of these on my desk.
PROD APR 03 2017 BB APR 03 2019
Still tastes good and effectively removes fillings, but back then they were 10% ginger. Now only 8% ginger. So (does math in head) 20% less ginger! Maybe it’s like marijuana and the newer ginger is more potent than back in the day.
Note to self - clean desk more often.
These are not the same as the ones on Amazon. The ingredient panel here says 8% ginger whereas on Amazon it says 10% ginger. So the one on Amazon has 25% more ginger. These also have 40 calories per serving vs 45 calories on Amazon.
Thoughts on these vs the double strength, super strength and spicy-turmeric options on Amazon? Or even the 10% original on Amazon? Is this 8% as good as 10/16/17/30% for stomach issues?
Will more ginger work better or is it just a difference of flavor?
Sadly, these chews fuse with their wrappers in the heat, which there is still plenty of in Central Texas. My current strategy is to get as much paper out of it as I can without too much effort, then let it melt in my mouth until I have a little wad of paper to spit out.
@werehatrack That would have been ideal. There are outer and inner wrappers and the candy has melted into both. The Summer of Satan’s Butt has left a trail of destruction.
These are not a Mehrathon item. They remained available for purchase when the 'Thon began, but they are not part of the 'Thon, and don’t count towards an IRK refund.
I just got my ginger chews and I have not been able to free one from its wrapper without spending much time, picking away a little bits of paper.
These all look like they’ve gotten too warm and they decided to get rid of them on meh. Really disappointing to have spent $30 with shipping for a bunch of candy that I can’t even open.
@mehorama I just got mine about an hour ago. Ironically I brought them inside quickly because I didn’t want them to get warm sitting in the sun.
I guess it didn’t matter. I am in the same boat where it takes about 3 minutes of picking just to eat one piece. I have purchased these before (not from Meh) and never had the issue. Bummer.
Yep, they must have clearanced these out to places like Meh because the paper wrappers (rather than the usual plastic wrappers on full-price packs at the grocery store) are an absolute disaster to try and unwrap.
Honestly it’s impossible enough that it’s making me look up Meh’s refund policy for the first time.
The versions of this that I’ve bought at Asian grocery stores used rice paper for the inner liner, and waxed paper for the outer. No need to peel the rice paper, and no sticking to the waxed. Sadly, a hammer won’t fix it this time.
None of the ones that I have put in the fridge have been edible but, so far, all of the ones that I have put in the freezer have been easy to peel. I don’t know if my luck will continue with the frozen ones; I am going to see if they remain easy to peel if I bring them back down to room temperature after freezing.
Mine just came- I got the paper off by running them under warm water. I haven’t had one before and it was really good. I’m not suggesting that arriving in the condition they were in was acceptable, just that it’s a work around.
Also I doubt anyone at Meh taste tested them so maybe wait and see their response before bringing out the torches and pitchforks.
@sammydog01 Same problem. I’m suspecting the company dumped some subpar product on Meh. Either they used the wrong paper to wrap or didn’t powder them before wrapping… But this is not normal for this product.
Got mine today and tried everything to get the paper off. Heated it in the microwave to soften. Chilled. Freezer. No dice. And I bought the max! Just dumped them.
Honestly, I haven’t really had as severe of issues in unwrapping them. I had three of them today, and one got stuck to the wax paper at the end. But I was able to peel it off with a bit of effort. For people talking about how the ones in the store are wrapped in plastic, those are a different product. Those are GinGins, I believe they are slightly stronger ginger-wise. Same company, but this one is the original product line.
@mgear86 You lucked out then! Maybe yours wasn’t exposed to heat or whatever caused it because every single one I tried was a disaster. There was no way I could even eat one.
It was like a cruel joke
@mehorama@sammydog01 I will say, I do think that I had spoken too soon. I had one this morning that was quite a struggle. I think after a few minutes I got it about 70% unwrapped, and just thought, “screw it, I’ll just spit out the waxed paper.”
@brainmist@mehorama@mgear86@sammydog01
Had similar issues with taffy before and found that storing them in the fridge worked well. They peel a lot easier
So, are these the new bricked candy corn? Just got some of the Super Strength Gin Gins and they are great. Being a (semi) hard candy, they don’t have the same issue, though I suppose a few weeks in a storage trailer in 3-digit heat might alter that reality a bit
These ginger chews were obviously stored improperly at some point. I’ve opened three different bags and tried to open at least nine chews. The wax paper stuck to all of them. It’s frustrating.
Unlike mgear86, I have no real interest in spitting out the wax(ed) paper.
I should have known better than to order these. I never WAS a Ginger fan. Mary Ann all the way.
They’re demanding I send them pictures of the candy and there’s no indication I’ll get a refund. Shame on them for selling this garbage. I don’t understand why they’re not just reading all the comments here. They should have divulged the candies are impossible to eat without eating the paper too.
@benagami They’re usually really good about refunding, and the request for the photo is for verification that the ones you got are actually problematic. I have seen comments from folks who got ones that weren’t troublesome, so they’re just making sure that the ones you got are part of the problem.
I’ve been shopping through Meh for years, and this is the first time I’ve felt completely ripped off. These things were obviously melted at one point, and who feels like putting that much work into getting the waxed paper off? Absolutely BS that they even listed these things.
Same song, second verse, a little bit louder and a whole lot worse.
Yeah, the tasty candies stuck to the paper like no one’s business. I’ll ask about a refund. After the protein tar-bars, this is just another disappointment!
The first couple of candies, I was able to get the paper off, the others have been terrible. Apologies to @Star2236. The package I sent you contained four bags of these atrocities. Consume or toss to your heart’s content. I was mainly using them as padding for the planters since I had run out of bubble wrap.
Mine arrived today. They are inedible because they are unwrappable. They were probably exposed to heat, so now the wax paper is stuck into them and unremovable.
Just came here to see if other folks were having the same issue as me with the wax paper glued to the candies. I guess so - I don’t see myself making through a full bag - I wonder if Meh even knew that were getting damaged goods.
@acarmack I can’t answer that last bit authoritatively, but I can say for sure that they know there’s a problem now. You probably want to head over to meh.com/support.
Most frustrating product I have ever purchased. YOU CAN NOT GET THE INSIDE WRAPPER OFF THE CHEW! I’ve tried pulling, cutting, freezing and nothing works. I don’t want to eat the paper!!
@bonblack It’s time to hit meh.com/support, then. Others have confirmed that they aren’t wrapped in rice paper (as is the custom in Asia, to sidestep this exact problem) so you’ll want a refund.
These were terrible to unwrap, and I’m still struggling through them. Took me this long to think to check the forum to see if it was just me.
Not going to bother trying to get a refund, but I am going to write off this brand entirely. How am I supposed to keep these in a car for motion sickness if the way they’re packaged means they need to stay in a cool dark place at all times?
Easiest way I found to get the paper off when it is stuck is to use warm water. Since I got a bunch of bags I will do a few bags at a time. Take the outer paper off, put 5 or 6 of them in a bowl of warm water for a little bit. Paper comes right off. Put them on a silicone mat to dry. Once dry, toss in confectioners sugar and store in a resealable tub. I find it goes rather quickly and I have yummy ginger chews for cheap.

Unless you change the recipe significantly in the last few years these are really good if you like ginger
@Cerridwyn I always liked Mary Ann better.
@Cerridwyn @Hanky That’s what I came here to say.
I’ve rarely seen these but they are ideal for motion sickness, especially for children. Strong ginger flavor but help2 if you chew before motion sickness gets started.
But Amazon has 48 5oz bags for $65 when you clip the $10 coupon on the page
https://a.co/d/2gVXfSi
Granted, it’s for subscribe and save orders only, but that extra 15% off when you have 5 items makes it $53 after said coupon.
@thechinglish Looking at the description, this seems like a 48 count. Or, in other words, 2 24-count bags.
@brainmist yes, that’s how math works - 48/2 is 24
So meh is selling 12 for $24 and Amazon is selling 48 for $53
Shall I continue?
@thechinglish Um. The serving size is two candies. There are 12 servings per bag (24 candies total). Or, with two bags (as pictured), 48 individual candies.
Now, maybe they do mean 48 bags of 24 candies each. But it seems odd they’d have 16x as many for only 3.125x the cost.
And it’s especially odd that the “pack of 48” gives a price per count, while the pack of 3 gives a price per ounce.
But hey, by all means, continue.
@thechinglish “Package” and “candy” are two separate units, bro
@brainmist @thechinglish there are reviews that mention buying the 48 5oz bags. That’s a lot of ginger chewin’.
@djslack I suppose there’s one sure way to find out… but this seems like an Amazon mislabel, especially given the prices per ounce of the rest of their items.
Of course, sometimes they’ll honor the mislabels…

Thoughts on these vs the double strength, super strength and spicy-turmeric options on Amazon? Or even the 10% original on Amazon? Is this 8% as good as 10/16/17/30% for stomach issues?
Will more ginger work better or is it just a difference of flavor?

Sadly, these chews fuse with their wrappers in the heat, which there is still plenty of in Central Texas. My current strategy is to get as much paper out of it as I can without too much effort, then let it melt in my mouth until I have a little wad of paper to spit out.
@dbmittens I’m surprised that they aren’t using rice paper.
@werehatrack That would have been ideal. There are outer and inner wrappers and the candy has melted into both. The Summer of Satan’s Butt has left a trail of destruction.
@dbmittens I tried that strategy as well and no dice. Hope you’re having more success.
@dbmittens mine arrived fused, and it’s below 75F here. I think they came pre-fused from a hot warehouse.
I’m zero for five with successful unwrapping so far.
@dbmittens @zippyus Farther down, it has been reported that soaking in warm water may help.
@mehorama Time to have a word with meh.com/support, then
@mehorama I just got mine about an hour ago. Ironically I brought them inside quickly because I didn’t want them to get warm sitting in the sun.
I guess it didn’t matter. I am in the same boat where it takes about 3 minutes of picking just to eat one piece. I have purchased these before (not from Meh) and never had the issue. Bummer.
@mehorama mine too. It’s a disaster. This is garbage. They should have disclosed that the candy was impossible to open.
@benagami @mehorama contact meh.com/support
Thanks for the 400 inedible pieces of delicious candy
@twentyoddyears contact meh.com/support
I am going to put a few in the freezer and see if that makes it any easier to unwrap. Maybe not, but worth a try I guess.
@Macoland One other user reported that this does work. But as soon as the individual pieces start to warm up, the wrapper sticks again.
@werehatrack It didn’t work well for me. I froze a couple of pieces and they were slightly easier to unwrap, but not by much.
Impossible to unwrap. I tried refrigerating them. Didn’t help. Maybe I’ll try freezer…, or garbage can.
@carlosps contact meh.com/support
I’m having the same problem. You cannot eat these. A huge waste of money. Can I return them?
@honeybeehives contact meh.com/support
Same issue.
@jchasma contact meh.com/support
@ayalam Update: one back to room temperature after freezing, it becomes difficult again to get paper off.
@ayalam and as someone else pointed out, having to keep them in the freezer kind of defeats the purpose of having them as a handy snack.
@werehatrack I do not disagree. But if you already bought them, it sure beats throwing them away, IMHO.
@ayalam

Woot should issue a credit to everyone who purchased these “chews”. Offering them for sale implies they are edible !
@mrlasky Now there’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time.
/giphy ben-kenobi
Mine just came- I got the paper off by running them under warm water. I haven’t had one before and it was really good. I’m not suggesting that arriving in the condition they were in was acceptable, just that it’s a work around.
Also I doubt anyone at Meh taste tested them so maybe wait and see their response before bringing out the torches and pitchforks.
/giphy angry crowd
@sammydog01 The warm water does help but defeats the purpose of having these handy on-the-go.
@mehorama I know. I’m sending in a complaint too.
@mygirlsmom3 Soaking in warm water to get the paper off has been reported to work to an extent.
You might want to hit up meh.com/support
@mygirlsmom3 @werehatrack hmm, I’ll bet they taste great in tea.
I haven’t opened mine yet… Apparently attention awaits!
@mygirlsmom3 @werehatrack ugh. Adventure. Is what awaits.
@mehorama @mgear86 You might want to test a few more from other packages. Just in case.
@mehorama @sammydog01 I will say, I do think that I had spoken too soon. I had one this morning that was quite a struggle. I think after a few minutes I got it about 70% unwrapped, and just thought, “screw it, I’ll just spit out the waxed paper.”
@mehorama @mgear86 @sammydog01 mine opened with just some end stickiness, to the disappointment the hounds.
@brainmist @mehorama @mgear86 @sammydog01
Fair play to Meh for issuing a refund on my order. I mean, they should never have been sold in the first place, but at least they made it right
They’re demanding I send them pictures of the candy and there’s no indication I’ll get a refund.
@Howiemom Definitely time to chew a hole in the wrapper of meh.com/support, I’d say.
For all of those complaining contact support. They took care of it like they always do.
Now I have to decide if it is too cruel to pass these out with the Halloween candy.
@Macoland How well do you think the kids will be able to remember where the stuff came from?
@werehatrack Good point, maybe I thrown them into the bowl the neighbors put outside.
@Macoland @werehatrack

Same song, second verse, a little bit louder and a whole lot worse.
Yeah, the tasty candies stuck to the paper like no one’s business. I’ll ask about a refund. After the protein tar-bars, this is just another disappointment!
These are fucking terrible. Im going to toss them. Can’t get the paper off them .Even with putting them in the fridge.
@mrjinx Check in with meh.com/support before you trash them; might as well get a refund.
My money was refunded. No request for photos.
Thank you meh. (and Marco)
@Trinityscrew Mine too and I would have been happy with a partial refund.
@Jannotti For this, there is meh.com/support
@bonblack @werehatrack already got em
