There’re signs in John Wayne airport (SNA) that say “Alcoholic Beverages Must Be Consumed In The Airport” but you see many people wandering around sober and empty handed.
@ergomeh I remember at an airport bar there was a sign that says firearms are not allowed but it was past the security checkpoints so you would think that as already assumed. Except maybe in Texas. Come to think of it, I think it was in Texas. DFW.
@pmarin Seems solid. It’s bad enough to have someone on the concourse who has illegally smuggled a gun through security, but having someone who has smuggled a gun and has been drinking is much worse…
@abamon81@posmr15 I’m not sure where ham comes from, but I’m almost certain that hamsters come from Hamsterdam. And if ham comes from Hamburg, why aren’t hamburgers made from pork?
The first time I heard that, I thought there was something not right, but I couldn’t put a finger on it. Later, the explicit pride in blatant infidelity was painfully obvious.
@werehatrack This was one of my favourite songs as a kid listening to the oldies radio. Listened to it for first time a few years ago and cringed hearing in through 21st Century ears…
“My cute little eskimo”
“My China Doll”
Eskimo, of course considered a slur, and China Doll is a problematic expression for a woman too. It’s clear Ricky Nelson wasn’t intending any offense (and back in '61, I doubt it would offend anyone), but it doesn’t work anymore in 2024.
@OnionSoup@werehatrack
So, pretty tell, what exactly is your point. Nowhere in the song does it say that he has or has not made informed consent. That’s YOU putting bad actions on a person with no reason.
@chienfou@OnionSoup The concept of polyamory as currently practiced was uncommon to the point of unknown in those days, while the “sailor with a girl in every port, none of whom were aware of the others” was a very common meme in the culture. It should not have been acceptable, it should not have been winked at, it should have been recognized for what it was - and yet it was not. I am applying precisely what the mores and expectations of the time considered commonplace, unexceptional, and even enviable among his fellow men. (The opinions of mere women mattered even less then than they do now.)
@chienfou Yes. And they practiced a coercive polygamy which far too seldom involved “-amory” in any real sense. (Some still do, and they’ve had to become ever more secretive about it.) This was not severely at variance with the reality of monogamy of the eras we have behind us, for that matter. Does the commonality of such abuse excuse it? Does ignoring it make it go away? I say that it does not. Understanding the past does not require us to accept its realities as having been good and fair and right. They were what they were, and we should know their depths to better avoid recreating them.
@werehatrack
You have totally missed the point that your ASSUMPTION is just that. There is no realistic basis in FACT, only conjecture. Making blanket statements that presume to qualify ALL past polyamorous relationships as being non-consensual is ridiculous.
Did you not live thru the 60’s and 70’s free love periods? Do you mean to say that ALL the women involved in that time were victims of a male dominated society and their choices… blah, blah, blah? Did the massive shifts in feminine empowerment escape you?
Not every song is a dog whistle.
@chienfou The song was not a dog whistle when it came out, it was a very blatant declaration of celebratory participation in what we now can recognize as inherently abusive male privilege which was so embedded in the culture of that day as to be hazardous to criticize. I remember the song’s premier, and I remember the reservations that were quietly voiced about it by some of the women and girls. I lived through the “free love” period, which came along later. I recall how and why it came to a crashing halt, too. And along the way, women found that outside of their being rendered less subject to sanction for promiscuity, they had precious little additional really effective agency until much later. Feminism’s early years brought many additional opportunities for exploitation along with the harder-won gains in rights and status. We still haven’t achieved anything close to full equality.
@werehatrack
While I still stand my promise that you’re painting this with a brush so broad that it covers all the outliers as well, I’m going to cut this short since it’s obvious that this is not the venue for this discussion.

Travel? What’s that?
@yakkoTDI I think it’s the main character in No More Heroes. Travel Touchdown, I think.
Red Rocket

@ergomeh That’s Funny! I get it. They just aren’t following the Rules! ?

is ham made from hamster meat?
@posmr15 No. Ham only comes any animal that is from Hamburg. Otherwise it’s just a sparkling Swine.
@abamon81 @posmr15 I’m not sure where ham comes from, but I’m almost certain that hamsters come from Hamsterdam. And if ham comes from Hamburg, why aren’t hamburgers made from pork?
@abamon81 @posmr15 @rockblossom Because pork is a verb.
Our house hold lives by the rule: hangers are only good for storing grounded airlines.
@whomeyesu dang what am I supposed to do with all these hangars then?
@thechilipepper0 Hear they might make a killer hot sauce.
@thechilipepper0 @whomeyesu
Rent out the space to airplanes?
Getting a set for if or when I start traveling for work again.

Welcome to the 21st century!
Polyamory…
@chienfou @werehatrack Ahead of his time…
He was yet another musician to die in an aeroplane in the 20th century.
@chienfou @OnionSoup Polyamory requires informed two-way consent or it’s just cheating - or worse

Do you know any Mormon history?
@chienfou Yes. And they practiced a coercive polygamy which far too seldom involved “-amory” in any real sense. (Some still do, and they’ve had to become ever more secretive about it.) Did someone say Mormon history?

Interesting idea. If it works well, I could personally use a couple of these! I’m not buying 18 of them to get rid of the excess, though.![:confused:](https://dj5zo597wtsux.cloudfront.net/joypixels/assets/6.6/png/unicode/64/1f615.png)
@3Phen you’re in luck, you only get 12!
That “handy 30-second video” was 162 seconds instead, but still exactly as helpful as I expected.
@xobzoo
Check your settings… there should be a fast forward button on that thing someplace!
@chienfou @xobzoo If only fast-forward had a “skip the stupid bits” button…
I suspect that United could break these handily, even in the center of a hardside suitcase.
Do NOT Place them in my IRK.
Totally getting these on the next round. I’m just worried they are thicker than the ones from the dry cleaner. I’ll probably gift a few just in case.
I just spent too much on that last IRK or I would buy today
I just received mine…Meh…![:cry:](https://dj5zo597wtsux.cloudfront.net/joypixels/assets/6.6/png/unicode/64/1f622.png)
Mine arrived broken but they’re so bad I’m not even going to ask for a replacement
@heehaw Next stop (if you haven’t already been there) is meh.com/support to let them know what happened.
@werehatrack Dangit they sent me a replacement when I explicitly said I didn’t want a replacement or refund!
@heehaw @werehatrack
Christmas gift for someone you (ahem) don’t like??
