10-19-17 Trick or TREAT
7When you go Trick or Treating… What is the favorite candy that you could find in your candy bag? (Or was, if you don’t go anymore.)
Did your parents “inspect” your candy and take their candy tax?
If you give out candy now, do you buy candy that you enjoy in case you have left overs, or do you buy candy you know you won’t eat?
History of Trick or Treat and some other fun facts:

Can you imagine having to sing or dance to get some candy?
Tonight’s musical selection is:
Acid Bath
I told someone once that the lead singer Dax Riggs could probably sing the phonebook and make it interesting. I don’t know what it is about his voice, but I really enjoy it. My favorite album is Paegan Terrorism Tactics. I actually played the CD in my car so much I destroyed it.
Dead Girl
Bleed Me An Ocean
Scream Of The Butterfly
Graveflower

Reese’s. Always Reese’s.
@jbartus I was always happy to Reese’s as well.
Why don’t you ship to Alaska? Last I checked, we are part of the United States.
@clarkeinak I’m pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that a package that costs them $9.55 or less (at 1 lb) to ship anywhere within the contiguous 48 states costs nearly double to send to Alaska.
(with distance providing cost variations, the disparity is pretty much the same across all weights, rate sheet) Naturally this doesn’t take into account Meh’s negotiated rates but I suspect that affects base rates far more than it affects zone differentials.
That said, you live in Alaska, I cannot imagine that this is a new phenomenon for you, were you just bored and wanting to complain? Do you really want 50 fidget spinners for $20 so badly that you’d be willing, for example, to pay $30 to ship them there? Or do you simply expect Meh to eat the extra expense and provide you with 50 for $20 for the $5 in shipping?
@clarkeinak while @jbartus answered your question… I’m curious why you would ask on a thread about trick or treating that isn’t started by staff?
@clarkeinak Just be glad you’re not Puerto Rico.
@RiotDemon Not sure how I wound up on a trick or treat thread…I tried to ask a question of Meh and wound up here.
@clarkeinak you can email support or you can start a new thread. You just replied to a random thread, apparently.
@jbartus If something is shipped USPS to Alaska, it costs no different then sending one state over. Yes, being from Alaska it’s a bit of a different playing field, but most places assume it’s more expensive to ship here when it’s not. Amazon doesn’t charge extra to ship here. When I’ve contacted and asked the shipping question, they look into it and send it another way (never hurts to ask). I have 11 grandkids and several of them are into the fidget spinners and I was hoping to get 20 of them (not sure what I would do with 50…LOL).
@clarkeinak It’s not. Meh typically uses FedEx Smart Post or Ground.
Also, USPS has zone rates too.
@clarkeinak Meh ships using FedEx Smart Post and UPS Surepost, not USPS. Further, outside of flat rate boxes and maybe simple letters, the USPS has zone-based pricing for which you’d be in (based on a quick check) zone 7 which means your package will cost more than most others’ to ship, if not all others. Yes it would be nice if Meh could make special arrangements but the whole point of the site is no frills deals, the special negotiated rates they enjoy with FedEx SmartPost are a big part of keeping the prices down. Amazon, by contrast, has money to burn.
I bought 50 of the things, if you want a dozen for your grandkids and would be willing to pay for a flat rate box I’m pretty sure they’d fit in a small one. Let me know as I plan to give the ones I bought away anyhow.
@jbartus Postal zones vary based on the origin. Zones are figured on the first 3 numbers of your zip code. The longest distance from you will be the highest zone.
@clarkeinak It is difficult to set a flat shipping price up to you unless it fits in the flat rate boxes or is light enough for first class. Meh would have to decide on each item what the cost would be and add that to the price. Instead, they recommend frieght forwarding companies to ship outside the continental US.
@speediedelivery I am aware which is why I used the zip code for Mediocre Laboratories when checking the zones for major cities in Alaska. From my house Alaska would be Zone 8.
@jbartus I thought you did ☻ I added the information for the random others that may read it that may not know. Seems like there are quite a few forum members that are newer to me. Maybe I have not been reading as much lately.
@speediedelivery I feel you! Ask me for anything but more time. ; -;
@speediedelivery i love your username.
@jerk_nugget First thought for many is Mr McFeely. I did not like the show but he was the mailman and I work at USPS. Long ago I sold on ebay and used this name to imply fast service.
@speediedelivery i thought it was just such a cute name and of course went hand in hand with the helpful information you were providing. after i thought about it for a moment, i started to wonder if it wasn’t an existing character i had come across as a kid and yep, realized i was thinking of mr mcfeely. i loved mr rogers although i never liked the ‘guest’ portions of shows as much as the regular bits. like when pee-wee started inviting the playhouse gang over all the time.
Nice, kind of reminiscent of Type O or Alice in Chains. I like that sound.
Missed you yesterday, we tried to carry on, but it wasn’t the same without you. Hope everything is good.
Here’s another band from Sweden, where evidently Nordic metal helps keep you warm.
HammerFall - Bushido
@2many2no Have you not heard of them? I missed the boat completely. I probably would still have absolutely no idea unless someone I knew mentioned them.
Scandinavia gets pretty dark and cold. They think black metal came from Norway during the dark winter when people were depressed. I’m from Norway, and I’m not even into black metal. I’m terrible.
Butterfingers and Baby Ruth definitely were my favorite.
Yup my parents inspected mine and Dad took a small tax, and we inspected our kids and Hubby (and maybe me) took a small tax.
I try to buy stuff I think is popular (and hubby and kids like) but I won’t be (very) tempted to eat myself.
One year when I was about 10 a new family moved into the neighborhood and the parents made us do a trick for a treat. We good naturedly argued it was “or” not “and” but they held fast. My friend was Dracula so held up his cape to obscure (most of) me then motioned for me to duck out of sight, all very obvious to the parents. We all were happy. They didn’t do that later years, sad because I clearly get a smile thinking about that now.
@mollama butterfingers! Yes. My friend has these at his Halloween party. You bet I took a couple home.
I’m curious how many kids today would even bother doing a trick or if they would just leave.
In my parent’s neighborhood, we just said “Trick or Treat” and got the candy. We were at my grandparents’ house one year and had to learn a song in order to go out, since that was the custom there.
My favorite was pretty much anything chocolate.
Sky Bars
Then (and now) Milky Way.
That’s assuming I’m stuck with American chocolate. I’ve got a nasty addiction to Minstrels, and English chocolate in general.
My Dad’s standard response to “Trick or Treat” was “Ok, let’s see your trick.” That almost always caught them off guard, but he wasn’t a stickler for it.
@blaineg I’ve been importing Daim bars. European chocolate is so much better in general. I’ll buy the Cadbury fruit and nut or Lindt chocolate if I’m buying something easily accessible.
@blaineg Ritter Sports are good, but no one gives them out for Halloween!
@rs0212 Hazelnut seems to be a European thing - I remember discovering my first chocolate-and-hazelnut candy bar in France in 1979 and being instantly addicted. I wonder, though, if they give out candy on Halloween in the EU at all?
My favorite candy is Kit Kats my parents always check our candy and then they would take all 5 bags from my brothers and sisters and dump them in one box!
Snickers, Baby Ruth or O’Henry.
They have everything a candybar should have.
mounds. which i’m not sure you can even get anymore in terms of little halloween packages. all i see is almond joy. i think kitkats may be a close second. i definitely remember my least favorite being good n plentys! blech!
my dad doesn’t care for sweets (he has a piece of pumpkin pie once a year and will have one or two of my mom & i’s cookies at xmas with coffee) so he never touched the stuff. my mom would take something chocolate for sure. she was also the one to stay behind and hand out candy and i believe it would all get used up. if there was anything left she’d likely take it to work. to this day if i have anything food related i don’t want i still give it to her to take to work. (most recently a load of coffee beans and kcups.)
anyway, don’t remember any candy inspections but it was probably unnecessary because i loved to sit in the living room and organize everything as soon as i got home anyway. (food in places like the bedroom or playroom was unheard of so it would never occur to me to steal off with the loot somewhere.) then i would eat a few pieces and the rest would go into The Treat Basket where it would linger for ages until my mom had eaten the chocolate pieces and the rest would eventually hit the trash bin.
a decade later my sister would come along and she has never liked chocolate. that made us see candy and dessert offerings totally differently!
also, i was a really shy kid. if someone had asked me to perform for them i probably would have went both mute and beet red and hoped my dad would see so we could leave.
@jerk_nugget Snack size mounds are apparently available. Walmart lists it but their website says its hit or miss at stores around here.
@duodec i need to check with them more. there’s no convenient walmart around here and i don’t much care for the store, but their website has found me some random things at next to nothing and been very quick on the shipping when i’ve used them in the past. (men’s zip up sweatshirt, cane vinegar, toiletries, etc.)
The best advice I ever saw for Halloween was that if you’re giving out candy, buy full size versions to hand out- it instantly gives you legend status in the neighborhood.
@dashcloud what status does handing out fidget spinners in late 2017 get you?
@dashcloud There was a house that gave a handful of pennies when I was a kid. I am old enough that it was the best place. Now I think the kids would throw them back.
@djslack Are you going to report back
@speediedelivery there should be plenty of reports based on sales last Friday. Assuming they get here in time, sure.
