Tenergy Aluminum Power Bank

  • Only 8000 mAh: a bulkier charger would pack more power
  • Fits well into flat spaces, but not so well into your jeans pocket or mouth
  • Don’t let everybody know you have this or the callers you’re avoiding will know your “My phone was dead” excuse is BS
  • Why the hell do these things always have flashlights?

Sometimes you want your battery to be flat.

Human technological development depends, in essence, on how tightly we can pack energy. More food from less land: agriculture. More work from less food: the plow, the wheel, the pulley. More heat from less fuel: coal, gas, oil. More energy in smaller, portable chunks: batteries. The future lurches forth only when we find some new way to beat the previous energy-to-mass standard, and make energy easier to move around.

Of course, the Tenergy Ultra Slim Power Bank represents no such transformative breakthrough. But by reconfiguring the familiar, chunky power bank into a slenderer, flatter shape, it illustrates the current limit on how much power we can easily pack into a tiny space.

It’s not really “smaller” than the typical 8000mAh battery. At 6" by 3" and just 0.39" thick, it just slides more easily into a laptop case or an inside coat pocket. And maybe doesn’t fit as well into your jeans pocket, or, we don’t know, inside your mouth. Look, we’re having trouble thinking of another kind of space where it might not fit, but you get the idea.

The point is, it’s pretty impressive that you can pack 2 charging ports (for smartphones or tablets), 5-6 full iPhone charges, and, what the hell, an LED flashlight into about six cubic inches. Still, someday, breakthroughs in power density will make the Tenergy Ultra Slim Power Bank look as clunky as other oversized power sources of the past, like Clydesdales or the sun.
