“Ouch!” Elliott withdrew his finger quickly as the end of a spare saw blade nicked him. His finger began to bleed from the cut, and he winced in pain.
The alien sitting nearby watched as it happened, and recognizing Elliott’s pain, extended a finger of his own. Light seemed to gather at its tip. “Ow,” he repeated after Elliott as he gently touched the wound. A moment passed, and Irk pulled away as Elliott looked at his finger first with amazement and then disappointment when he realized nothing had changed.
“I don’t know why I thought that would do something,” admitted Irk. “Crap, now I’ve got blood on my finger too.”
