Be Cozy

Halloween. The end of October. We’ve escaped the oppressive heat of summer, but winter’s dark frigidity hasn’t fully set in yet. It’s a time of warming spices, of hot apple desserts, of pumpkins carved and pumpkins eaten.

What’s more: it’s the gateway to the Holidays. Less than a month before Thanksgiving, a holiday of comfort food and family, and not even two months before things get really jolly.

What we’re saying is, Halloween has all the trappings of a cozy holiday. Even a little bit of old-school, good-natured spookiness can be nice. We’re talking Hocus Pocus here, none of that Saw shit.

But the dominant voices of Halloween want to paint it as some nasty parade of gross-outs and jump-scares. It’s all creepy ghosts hanging in the trees, enormous realistic-looking spiders that move and have glowing eyes, a family of Home Depot skeletons converging in the front yard.

It doesn’t have to be this way, though!

You can curl up on the couch under a flannel blanket, drink a cider cocktail, read a Shirley Jackson novel, and then turn on 1995’s Casper. Or, wait, nope. Just checked the Rotten Tomatoes. What about Ernest Scared Stupid? Yikes, even worse. Let’s go with Little Shop of Horrors. That works.

Our point is, just because the world tells you to fill your October with slashers and blood-curdling screams, you can take some time to snuggle up and enjoy a bit of subtle spookiness. And these glass pumpkins would be the perfect accent. Sure, they’ve got spiderwebs and skulls and black cats on them. But c’mon! They’re cute as hell!

And that’s okay. Halloween can be subtly eerie yet cute and comfortable. In fact, we say it should be.
