As Boromir held Frodo back from the ledge, Gandalf crawled as far as he could, but it was too late. He was going to fall. He needed to fall.

Frodo cried out for him, wrestling with Boromir. The rest of the party watched in disbelief, knowing they had no choice but to keep moving.
Only one diminutive and trollish member stood over the edge and remarked of Gandalf’s final words, “Wow, calling us fools? That was rude.”
It took all of them great restraint not to punt him into the pit as well.
