“And you shan’t be here much longer,” said Cork Muldoon in his true voice, which was pitched so high that the others flinched at the sound of it. “For, unbeknownst to you, I have hidden an explosive device within this ship’s cargo hold. Its 15-minute timer will start as soon as we reach the signal, aka the escape team I’ve coordinated with.”
“Eight, seven, six,” continued the countdown.
“But why?” Jane said.
“I have been a space bandit long enough to know it’s best to leave no trace behind,” said Cork Muldoon.
“Three, two, one,” said the computer voice. “Signal reached.”
A moment passed in total silence.
“Vessel requesting permission to dock,” said the computer voice. “Scanning, scanning, scanning. Status assessed: unknown. Docking request: denied.”
The four humans cheered.
“Yeah, eat that,” Paul said.
