@compunaut “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” is one of those songs that is totally owned by its original artists (John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band) that demands you scream “NO!” to any other version. Taken out of time and context it is a POS. Thanks for posting the real thing.
My god I hate that song. It’s repetitive, cheesy, and digs into your brain where it lives for days until something worse comes along to battle it for residence. I would rather listen to George Michael’s last Christmas on repeat for a week than to have to hear that damned song again. Not a fan of Mariah careys most popular song that shall not be named either but at least it doesn’t send me into a murderous rage.
Not sure why I hate that song so much but I really really do. I think I have some kind of repressed trauma…
I must admit Taylor Swift’s cover of “Last Christmas” turned this old hard rocker into a Swiftie. Maybe an issue of near-pedophilia but I’ll never own up to it. Last Christmas
@ThunderChicken lol She’s 30, plenty old enough to leer at without feeling like a pedo.
Personally, muted is the only way I’d ever watch her videos, if I ever did.
I have seen time bend as my wife’s hand moves to the channel button at near the speed of light when Mariah Carey’s Christmas abomination comes on the radio. (But it’s still better than Dominic the Donkey). And as regards Last Christmas, couldn’t stand it until we went and saw Last Christmas, so now I picture Emilia Clarke singing it dressed as an elf, it is more palatable. Best Christmas song, imho, I Am Santa Claus, a parody of I Am Iron Man. (How much does he weigh? How do those reindeer pull his sleigh?)
“Wonderful Christmas Time” gets a lot of hate, but its in the minority of modern Christmas songs that actually has a festive tone. It seems like so many of the modern “classics” are solemn at best, and often downright maudlin.
@eonfifty Awhile back I was reading the comments on an article about Yoko and someone was like, why does everyone single out Yoko, I don’t remember anyone hating/complaining about Linda. And I was flabbergasted. It’s been going on longer than I’ve been alive.
@tinamarie1974 Let me assure you the soundtrack runs heavily to the Dean Martin era, and that The Waitresses were notable by their inclusion. We’re still probably a few years away from a New Wave Nursing Home.
It’s OK, but it doesn’t beat Happy Xmas, which is, itself, overrated.
@simplersimon definitely an earworm tho…

Sheryl Crow does a nice version, too.
Not an update of an old song, but it’s my favorite Christmas song of the last few years.

@ivannabc It’s not repressed trauma, it’s lobotomy by bad Christmas music.

The modern classic about the modern family:
Robert Earl Keen, Merry Christmas from the Family
[A great example of lousy auto-generated captioning!]
@rtjhnstn Love that bass voice, perfect for the song.
@rtjhnstn Huh, Thurl Ravenscroft was also Tony the Tiger.
Pretty much anything off of “Oi to the World” by The Vandals but particularly this little diddy:

The best modern Christmas song of our time.
@xenophod Ah yes, the nuclear blast shelter picnic blanket.
Current Christmas song that makes me really happy I start vacation tomorrow:
I don’t know what it is about this song, it just really grates on my nerves.

@eonfifty Linda? Yes, that is as good an explanation as any for his whole post-Beatles career and some people’s irrational hatred of it.
@mossygreen

Or many others by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
I got really excited last week when the college radio station I was listening to in the car played Nick Lowe’s “Christmas at the Airport”
And then yesterday on the way to work on metv.fm I heard “Pretty Little Dolly,” which I had forgotten exists.
I don’t think anyone posted this one yet…SHOCKED!!

@tinamarie1974 I heard it in a nursing home last week! I thought, it’s come to this at last.
@mossygreen now I feel OLD

Nothing beats singing along with Mitch Miller and the Gang, from the 60’s:
