@mycya4me yeah I know, I was married to a software support engineer. Ive heard all the stupid stuff people do/say. Just looking for entry lvl first lol
@ragingredd@shahnm Hey I got mine back in Jan 1998, It Never expires! The A+ just gives you the very basic framework. I am sure that it has changed a lot since I was took it. I also have taken & passed two of 3 Ham Radio exams. wait till you get into the field. That is where you really learn, for me I did NOT go the 1st level Remote support help Desk… I started doing Refresh/ Merger projects. That is something Newbie need to work on. Yes I have done in shop repairs (get a ticket from help desk then go see the user) I also have done a Whole lot Field support. Go to this place & fix it. Sometimes the fix is something that NO book can teach as the Reason is the Fix should NOT work, But does!
That is the Reason I tell people I have a bag of Pixie dust & a Magic wand. BTW they are issued on the First day a Desk Top tech. All tech has them!
@ragingredd I will tell you one that you will not face today. I have been doing this for over 20 year.
I had to go on two service calls. The user I rammed their 3.5" floppy into the slot load Optical drive. I was telling that story to another tech. Yep. We were on the Client floor (Social Services). He pointed to a guy in the corner he did it. But his excuse was that
the client’s child that he was working with is the one that shoved the Floppy into the Optical drive. Yea Right… then you go back to the Bull pin & start ROTFLOL with you hello tech.
I have seen a lot! Many Clowns, think they are VERY Important (some corp jobs well for the Execs & their Admins, get a Special team to serve them… they don’t interact with US the regular tech support or anyone me might service! Since you have been already infected with the IT Bug, you will do good, But there is ZERO cure. It does help if you love tinker with computers/ you network at home!
@mycya4me@shahnm I honestly don’t care were I start (only saying this cause I’m unemployed ATM) but I have a lot of tinkering done at home… To reinforce class ware and curriculum with hands on experience, I manage and assisted in building a VMware 5.5 environment with an EqualLogic iSCSI SAN. This provided hands on experience with, switches, SANS, file systems, FTP, Putty, and RDP. Environment built is a Dell R900 server, Dell PowerEdge 6248s (2 in a stack with 4 VLANS) an EQL PS400 iSCSI (sata) array and EQL PS6100 iSCSI (sas) array SAN.
built my Raspberry pi and on it is a Pi-hole that’s acting as a DHCP server. So I dabble lol I also have a RAID 5 in my pc. my problem is coming from retail and manufacturing and no xp in “IT” its becoming harder, cause unfortunately they’ll hire the person who has a better looking resume.
@ragingredd@shahnm Hey I agree, My Suggestion Is go to some of the Local recruiting firm. Many of the Larger temp companies have a IT side. They will fix up your Resume & send you on Projects, Yes many you Mom could do. BUT that is experience. Yes you would not get paid much, But then you are “Getting your feet wet” It depends on how well you do if they want to con’t use you. Yes I do remember those days, A contract firm paid for my A+ & the training, so for 6 months after I came after I passed. I was locked to them, I could NOT look for any projects outside of that company.
Then I started getting Recruiter start calling me. I had my Resume up on Dice, Indeed, Linked & others
So what I do with some of those couple day project, what I learn at home I made a section called
“Field Service/ Desktop / System Support Technician/ Second-level Support Technician”
I have a functional & a chrono resume
BTW I just checked I got my A+ on Jan, 30, 1997 that is when I say I became a Pro Tech.
@mycya4me@ragingredd@shahnm yeah that’s hard if you know you would be better but for some reason there is a better “looking” resume.
It sounds clichè but make connections somehow. This is probably much different now than it used to be. LinkedIn still seems to be a good resource if you set up connections. Also a small company might like you based on that but a big corp will just flatly evaluate degrees and experience which might understate your skills.
@LinnE Boy, does Meh, SideDeal, MorningSave, …, have stuff to sell you!
(And, Congratulations from the governments that will enjoy collecting property taxes for the life of that property, just so you don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s all yours.)
(And, from me.)
@phendrick Oh, not my first go-round as a homeowner, so I know what I’m in for. We have 54 acres, and left 40 of it in the Commercial Forestry Program, so at least part of the taxes will be liveable.
Since my stroke being alive is why every day is a Holiday! Celebrating life! Cause why not?! The past is gone and tomorrow is not promised but you have yourself today to Enjoy!
Wednesday. It’s Madly In Love With Me Day, National Crab Rangoon Day (Chinese takeout will include large order of crab rangoons), National Internet Friends Day (thank you, Mehtizen friends), and World Radio Day (@PoolToyWolf will understand this one). Oh, and National Apology Day. Sorry for wasting your time with this comment.
@ItalianScallion only here can I learn facts such as this. And on quick reading (a skill I learned in college) I merged in my head with next post for “National Crab Condom Awareness Day”
Ordinarily, I’d say Friday afternoon, when all of the Valentine chocolate drops to half price. But my preliminary survey shows that nearly none of what’s in stock nearby is dark, so I guess it’s going to be April 1st.
Michaelmas.
Going to bed.
A lil half a week holiday in a cabin with a hot tub at the tail end of winter.
August 8 is National Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day!
https://www.almanac.com/zucchini-fertility-spawns-annual-holiday
@shahnm How sneaky do you have to be? I was thinking of building a trebuchet this summer.
@yakkoTDI

/giphy do it
@shahnm @yakkoTDI I dare ya! Triple dog dare ya!!!
There was some big sportsball event recently?
@narfcake nah, i couldn’t make the pickle ball match due to a bad case of ennui.
Valentine’s Day is my anniversary. I took the day off (long weekend this year). The wife and I are heading to the coast.
@tweezak east, west, north, or south?
@catthegreat West. Nothing too exciting. Eat lunch. Buy crabs off the docks in Newport Oregon and grab some oysters on the way home.
Is Sadie Hawkins day still a thing?
@phendrick yes but not this year
@catthegreat Why is that?
(Just because Melania and Taylor already have been provided or are providing their sinecures?)
Starting my new career in IT!
@ragingredd

/image pennywise
Good luck.
@ragingredd it is a great career, yes you deal with a lot of clowns & ones that think they know more than you do.
@mycya4me yeah I know, I was married to a software support engineer. Ive heard all the stupid stuff people do/say. Just looking for entry lvl first lol
@shahnm Thanks, I’ve been busting my ass to pass my CompTia A+ cert. I know theres a bunch of clowns.

Good Friday and Easter. I love sampling my wife’s chocolate bunny and those Cadbury eggs.
@hchavers Cadbury eggs might be the only kind of eggs we can get at that point!
@hchavers @pmarin I’ll take “Things @hchavers says that sound dirty, but aren’t” for $800, Alex.
@hchavers @pmarin @shahnm
House Day - in theory, we should be getting our house finished by late summer/early fall.
@LinnE Congratulations, and also, focus on stress relief!
@LinnE Boy, does Meh, SideDeal, MorningSave, …, have stuff to sell you!

Not a holiday but the next big thing for me is the Houston Rodeo
@cbatte ah, I miss Go Texan days. Back when we had to wear the power suits to work and that was the only day we could wear jeans to work.
@ironcheftoni I work from home on Fridays. Go Texan day doesn’t have the same impact as it used to unfortunately.
Sept. 19, International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
@PocketBrain arrgh, not again!
Mardi Gras !
@hschex Shrove Tuesday for me growing up! Always a great excuse for eating way too many pancakes (crepes)
Towel Day!!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towel_Day
@rand3y The Best day! You should not leave home w/o one!
To-day
Halloween

And FYI, Thursday is National Condom Awareness Day (raise your hand if you’ve never heard of condoms) and World Impotence Day.
@ItalianScallion I guess one can only celebrate one of those days at a time.
@ItalianScallion i don’t understand how i am supposed to be aware of whether the guy standing behind me in line is wearing a condom?
Certainly don’t intend to bring that up in conversation!
Daylight Savings Time.
Ordinarily, I’d say Friday afternoon, when all of the Valentine chocolate drops to half price. But my preliminary survey shows that nearly none of what’s in stock nearby is dark, so I guess it’s going to be April 1st.
But you would have to wait till Feb 15th which is Saturday
