@Cerridwyn Filk is awesome! Especially since I have been attending Con’s for 40-50+ years. One of my fav bands was Coyote Run, (they are a mix of Celtic/Filk) sadly the disbanded, but I have ALL their CD’s (check them out on YouTube)
@mycya4me cool I would look them up. So are you one of the people I didn’t see up in seattle? Are you going to La next year? I think I have actually heard their name. Got to meet Alexander James Adams this time and there were some other people there that I know. Saying that is. And some that I didn’t. One that was really awful. Probably the most awful voice I have ever heard singing in public
@Cerridwyn Sadly I don’t make it out of the South often! I do attend several SciFi cons. On my bucket list is WorldCon (due to the fact it Covid was rearing its ugly head, I had to Miss it when it was in Washington, DC, I was even a per-supporter (I though that would give you a pass)
Also I want to go to DragonCon.
A couple good Bands are Mikey Mason, Blibbering Humdingers, Boogie Knights, The Salacious Crumble & others .Also a Good small con is Convivialva dot com It is Young But has the feel of a 20+ years old Fan run con. As most of the staff, well I have know for 30+ years. It truly Family! Better than Blood!
Another one is RavenCon dot com-- they also did a coup – 2026: RavenCon partners w/ Amazing Stories magazine to host the OFFICIAL 100th Anniversary of Science Fiction (and 20 years of RavenCon)! Amazing Stories magazine coined the term Science Fiction 99 years ago. So Next year will be the 100th Anniversary
Yes I already have my weekend pass to both! So come on to the East Coast & Join me! It is cheap for the Weekend pass at both!
Sorry I was so Verbose!
I listen to Vin and Vixy, Heather Dale, Alexander James Adams (and his previous incarnation as Heather Adams and a part of Phoenyx), Leslie Fish (the godmother of filk) and a fair bit of SCA bards who do SCA “filk” and SF filk too
have you ever been in the filk discord? I can whisper you an invite if you haven’t. It’s variously active, There is an /r filk to
I’m in So Cal, have only ever been to one (set) of cons outside of the west (if you include AZ, been to 2 there) and they were gaming, and awhile ago before gaming filk was a thing. (Emerald Rose for the win there)
I have heard of Ravencon, and of Course DragonCOn
I think, seriously, that LACon next year may be the last in the US for a bit. Will there be NASFiCs? I dunno anymore.
Out here we have Westercon and LaCon among others and ofc San Diego ComicCOn and nope, too peoply
@Cerridwyn@Kyeh There is also Valentine Wolf. But my two Favs are The Salacious Crumble & Mikey Mason, for different reasons. If you think you could survive the East Coast/ Virginia come to one or both of the Cons I mentioned. that is if you are Brave enough! hehehe
@Cerridwyn Well, Convivial va is brand New so if it the name got all the way to the West coast I would be Major league Surprised! As I had said the Con leadership has been doing it for 40 + years or the understudy for the leadership. Sadly the reason Convivial came into being is that most worked MarsCon dot Net. It is 30+ years old & they also work on other cons that has died (SciCon) it’s patron saint was Frank Kelly Freas. (look him up) due to his connections this “small” 500 max con got some Major stars.
Well the leadership of MarsCon was looking for someone younger to keep MarsCon running, the board selected this guy just before covid. But then he decided to sack the entire Staff & ask back only a few. Yes some were Major league pissed, So they created Convivial… Most 98% of my Con family went to Convivial. Since Family is VERY Important I went where my Con Family was going to be! 2026 will be year 3!
@mycya4me very cool. And I remember Kelly Frias well. Gremlin that he was. Did you ever see a copy of the capture? It was done by Phil folio and Robert aspirin back in about 1975. Please allow for the fact that this is voice to text. Out here our patron saint is probably Larry niven. In fact the LA con mascot is named after his wife.
I don’t travel so well anymore it takes me a very long time to recover when I go even up to seattle. But yes covid screwed a lot of fan run operations.
@Cerridwyn From what I heard it was truly the New leader wanted people that would agree with him. So a lot of the former leadership were canned & NOT asked back (covid had nothing to do with it!)
Mine’s a mix of classical, modern full orchestral (heavy on the movie soundtracks), trailer music, some digital from artists like Vangelis and Isao Tomita, and Weird Al.
My preference against most rock is strong and solid. There are a few exceptions, but not terribly many.
Grindcore, Dub Reggae, Rocksteady Reggae, Stoner Doom, Powerviolence, Oi!, and Punk. Oh, and one time right before they opened I put Puscifer’s Country Boner on loop at a restaurant I do work for and left. Fucking hilarious! I was told they had it playing for nearly an hour!
@edguyver14 yikes, I had to look Puscifer up (yeah, I’m old). Then got lost in a Reddit hole where someone played it remotely on a TouchTunes jukebox in a country bar that had live streaming…🫨
Typically classic rock for yardwork etc. Everything from French cooking music to yacht Rock to Gypsy Kings and Cesària Èvora, Paul Thorn, Robin Rogers, Charles Aznavour and Jacques Brel when inside in the kitchen etc. Lots to choose from on my Pandora playlists.
@chienfou I love this entire list!!! (Well, except I’ve never heard French cooking music - ?)
I saw the Gypsy Kings at Red Rocks ages ago, they were great.
depends on the day… and usually what part of the day.
6am i will start with House (mark farina, doc martin, hardkiss brothers) or Ambient Beats (rapoon, o yuki conjugate), at some point i move on to a bit of socal/austin punk (minutemen, big boys) then whatever mood the workday has given me… can be from neubauten to x to wayne hancock, to tones on tail… i ended the day yesterday with The Nightfly by Donald Fagan
Good music.
Usually jazz.
Gregorian chant
@sproinky It makes my ears bleed!! lol
Bluegrass Railroad (the album) on repeat.
Mix of what will piss off my Boomer coworker but I’ve been leaning hers on Chappell Roan, video game music, K-pop and blink-182/green day.
All of the above and more. Some podcasts and audiobooks too.
As soon as I’m focused on what I’m working on I stop processing the music, so I don’t bother.
Not that I work anymore but what I listen to mostly is celtic, folk, and filk.
@Cerridwyn Filk is awesome! Especially since I have been attending Con’s for 40-50+ years. One of my fav bands was Coyote Run, (they are a mix of Celtic/Filk) sadly the disbanded, but I have ALL their CD’s (check them out on YouTube)
WORKER BEES! HERCULES! TURKEY GREASE! AWESOME!

“Blibbering Humdingers, Boogie Knights, The Salacious Crumble” are fantastic names.

You do you. I’ve got headphones if I need them.
@werehatrack I love all you mentioned, especially Tomita.
Depends on what I am doing. Concentration needs Classical, Analysis needs Rock, and Designing need Classic Rock.

KEXP streaming
Podcasts mostly.
The eerie clatter of death’s footsteps on their inexorable advance
@sleuth Darn it!! I thought my new shoes were quieter.
@sleuth And it’s gotten so much worse since death took up Irish line dancing.
Mario Kart Double Dash OST
Miles Davis (and other jazz)
The latest edition of Trick’s Syntheic Podcast… music from 60+ decades of many styles, but no opera at all.
podcasts
I listen to podcasts while I work.

I saw the Gypsy Kings at Red Rocks ages ago, they were great.
@Kyeh
It’s one of the stations available on Pandora…
@chienfou Well, that’s unique; ultra niche!
I used to listen to classical. But lately I’ve been hitting the yacht rock
pretty hard. Have you ever noticed how much Steely Dan sings about college?
All of the above, except country.
Harsh noise wall
AUDIOBOOKS!
A variety of music. Rock, rap, pop, nothing, podcast

80’s alt & new wave
As a giant band nerd, there’s very little I won’t listen to. The list is eclectic and long. Always depends on weather, mood and activity.
…pop
While at work, I mostly listen to my coworkers on Teams.
Complaints.
