one of the rare meh polls where there’s too many good options to pick one! the usual suspects, oceans eleven (actually twelve and thirteen too), and reservoir dogs are all top movies to me. the town wasn’t half bad either, but the others are films i watch over and over.
In the interest of hoping to convince somebody to watch some foreign film, it’s got to be Rififi. Or if you absolutely require it be in English, and a comedy, and have an Academy Award-winning performance, Topkapi (by the same director.)
David Mamet’s swear-laden dialogue kicks an airport novel plot up a notch. Gene Hackman plays the leader of a seasoned heist crew, described by magician-turned-actor Ricky Jay as being “so cool, when he goes to bed, sheep count him.” This is not an overstatement. Hackman’s burglar is the reverse Inspector Clouseu, a master of disguise who’ll whip out a six-shooter when necessary. That doesn’t make Heist’s one-last-job setup any less impossible.
