"The New Colossus" sums up America for me
9and it saddens me that we aren't that. It brought tears to my eyes yesterday, and I'm not one for sentimentality.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

I suck at markdown.
I'm afraid to say how much I think we've become the opposite of this, all in the name of somehow "restoring America to her former greatness." Really, I'm afraid. I'm somewhat opinionated about these things and have a gift for pissing certain stupid people off. This will have to do. But thank you for letting me know there are others with similar feelings. Truly.
+1
Now instead of huddled masses yearning to breathe free, it's sit on your asses demanding stuff free. :(
@pistol Before you know it we'll be sitting on other people's asses!
I read that as, "Mother of Exiles. From her bacon-hand"
Mmmm...bacon hand....
