The Metal Thread For Metalheads
8Let’s talk about metal music. Share your favorite bands and videos, talk about your preferred genres, gloat about your concert experiences.
I’ve shared Amorphis around the forums quite a bit, it’s not a secret that they are one of my favorites. I’m finally going to see them in April. Super excited.

@PlacidPenguin I almost said nothing with pots and pans. I didn’t even expect the door stopper!
@RiotDemon
Nobody ever expects it.
@PlacidPenguin Sweet fucking drum solo.
Type O Negative
Ugh. That voice! RIP Peter.
Love You To Death
Be My Druidess
Peter’s voice rivals Benedict Cumberbatch. I don’t know if @sammydog01 would agree.
@RiotDemon
Type O Negativity is something I listened to back when I still followed new music a little.
@RiotDemon
Re car CD player: Who still uses those? You don’t just rip and put on the phone? Or get a file extension version in the 1st place?
@f00l I have an older prius. It doesn’t have aux input. I could get one of those cassette adapters… But I actually like having the CD inserts. I do download music and then burn my own CDs a lot of the time.
@f00l
I know some people who don’t even know they have smartphones. They use the CD players in their cars…
The audio is built into the computer screen thing… So it’s not like I could easily switch the radio.
@f00l I still use the CD player in mine, but that may be in part because I actually buy CDs, so I might as well use them. But it’s also nice to just throw in a CD of something you know you like and that’s that. No dealing with hooking up the phone (and draining its battery faster) or USB drives or any of that. It’s not like I exclusively use the CD player, of course. When we have satellite radio I’ll usually use that (channel 37, which is Octane, if anyone else has Sirius), or in the car with the HD radio I’ll use the local rock station’s HD channel, which is The Metal Channel (if any of you are in the Seattle area, that’s 99.9’s HD channel 2). It’s nice having options, but the CD is an easy, straightforward way to play music you know you like with minimal hassle.
@f00l My Jeep stereo has a hard disc drive built in. I downloaded maybe 1500 songs & set it to random.

i haven’t really kept up with current metal, but i definitely bust out some old school metal when needed.
@Al_Coholic holy shit this is good
@Dweezle I agree. It’s awesome.
Here’s a Christmas song for you all.
@Al_Coholic
I’d say for me, my preferred genres are pretty much generic “heavy metal”, thrash, and power metal. Just as a random sampling of stuff that I listen to a good amount is All That Remains, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, DragonForce, Five Finger Death Punch, Halestorm, Killswitch Engage, Nightwish, Seven Kingdoms, Trivium, and Unleash the Archers. If you guys want, I’ll type up a full list of every artist that’s on my phone, metal or not. I’ve pretty much always been a metalhead. I got away from power metal for a little while and more into thrash, but lately I’ve been getting back into power metal being my main subgenre. If anyone’s curious about these bands, or wants to know some of the other stuff I listen to, just lemme know! It’s hard to find people to talk metal with because so many people are like “that’s not real music” or they just refuse to listen to it. They think all it consists of is growls and yells and dark/depressing/murdery lyrics.
@Mehsturbator agreed. How often do you hear about metal that it’s just devil music, blah blah blah… Meanwhile there’s tons of Christian metal bands. What would they think of that? Haha
I’ve tried to explain to my one co-worker that all metal isn’t just growling, and he’s listened to clean vocalists… But then he still comments about how you can’t understand them. He makes me want to bang my head against a wall.
I basically only talk metal with my partner. I don’t really know anyone else that likes metal except for some old friends that I barely keep in touch with on Facebook.
Early Amorphis was sweet! First two albums are godly. But as for their later smooth clean vocal era - I strongly prefer their country mates Sentenced.
P.S. Metal sucks.
@serpent I strongly prefer their clean vocals. I love Tomi J. as their vocalist which might be obvious by the song I put in the opening. Some of their early stuff I’m ok with, but some of it is just way too growly for me.
Circle, Skyforger, and Under The Red Cloud are my favorite albums.
@RiotDemon I am not really familiar with Amorphis after Pasi Koskinen left. I heard “Eclipse” once and it didn’t move me much. My pick for the best is “Tales from the Thousand Lakes”. But I’ve been at their gigs in early 2000’s (mostly coincidentally though) and Pasi’s Ajattara project is pretty enjoyable at times.
That is not to say I don’t like melodic kinda gothic-like (rough definition, Amorphis is rather amorphous) metal with clean vocals. Sentenced is, again, perfect. So is almost everything by Katatonia. The Vision Bleak from Germany kicks some serious ass, as long as you’re fine with their thick German accent (I love it).
/youtube Gloryhammer the unicorn invasion of Dundee
/youtube Gloryhammer full album
I love metal that tells fun tales.
@RiotDemon Every time I listen to Gloryhammer, I can’t help but smile. It’s things like this that make power metal my favourite subgenre. You get some of the most amazing fantasy tales combined with great musicianship and epic soaring vocals. I really ought to see if I can’t get some Gloryhammer onto my phone.
@Mehsturbator right?? I usually listen to this when I’m cleaning around my house. Makes it less miserable, haha
@RiotDemon I can’t believe I didn’t think of this earlier. If you love metal (especially power metal) that tells a tale, listen to DragonForce’s Three Hammers:
Every time I listen to this song it makes me want to go do something epic.
@Mehsturbator I love everything about Dragonforce except the vocalist. He’s ok, I just don’t love it. It seems a lot of power metal bands has these vocalists that sing in a higher key, I guess you’d call it. Same thing with the singer from Helloween. (Just the first example I could think of)
@RiotDemon Which vocalist? ZP or Marc? I agree that ZP songs, on the whole, are in a higher key, though I personally prefer it. Marc has a pretty different voice. His first album with them (The Power Within) felt a little rough, but I was blown away by Maximum Overload. I don’t know what it is, but I feel like he found his place for that album and it just worked. I still prefer ZP on the whole though.
@Mehsturbator I didn’t know there was two different vocalists. I’m going to assume everything I’ve heard was by the same vocalist. I’ll have to try and remember to look it up.

@Thumperchick is there anyway you can delete the grim reaper and change it to this picture instead for the little thread preview photo?
The new RIP 2017 thread inconveniently picked the same reaper and I don’t want people to think I’m bumping that thread when I bump this one.
@Dave @moose can one of y’all help with this? Looks like TC has been busy.
@RiotDemon Oops, just noticed this. I think I did what you asked.
@dave thanks!

For when I need something upbeat.
@RiotDemon That reminds me a lot of Nightwish’s Last of the Wilds.
Dark Passion Play is, in my opinion, their best album. So if you want to give Nightwish a shot, that’s the one I’d go with.
@Mehsturbator I’ll check it out. So far I’ve liked all the Nightwish songs I’ve heard, I think.
I’ve gotten more into folk metal lately. It’s a fun genre.
@RiotDemon I have 118 songs from Nightwish, and there is only one I don’t like. They’ve changed a lot over the years with their sound, going from Tarja to Annete and then Floor, but it’s kind of nice. I actually really, really like Tarja so I have her solo career albums as well. All this is to say that no matter what you hear from them, it’s likely to be good.
Almost forgot to mention, their cover of Over the Hills and Far Away is absolutely phenomenal. Highly, highly recommended.
Texas metal Pantera, Drowning Pool, Upon a Burning Body, Nothing More.
Eurometal Avatar, Rammstein, Black Sabbath, Children of Bodom, Led Zeppelin.
Latin metal Ill Nino, Semblant, Mystica Girls, Nonpoint.
Asian metal Sigh, Aldiuos, Babymetal, Dir En Grey, Destrose.
Classics Prong, Kittie, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Alice in Chains, Type O Negative.
5FDP, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, Theory of a Deadman.
Made loud to be played loud. Best seen live.
This is my exercise program. Bang your head, work up a sweat, drain all your troubles. It’s physically and psychically cleansing.
So many bands, shows, festivals and pits have I endured. Here’s one of my all time favorite offerings from the metal pile. Killswitch Engage - My Curse
@denboy Love this song. I was really excited to see it as one of the songs on the Burnout Paradise soundtrack (I know the game is old, but I just got it free with Gold so meh). Great album too. Their cover of Holy Diver still holds its spot as my favourite cover ever, though Disturbed is an insanely close second with The Sound of Silence.
@Mehsturbator As late to the Burnout Paradise game as you are, you’re still ahead of me. By now you’ve probably seen the Conan performance for sound of silence. It’s strangely moving, great cover. Have you heard Shadows Fall doing Pink Floyd, Welcome to the Machine? Pretty neat too.
@denboy I’ve not, I’ll have to give that one a listen. Pretty gutsy move, though, covering Pink Floyd. I have found though that generally, I prefer covers to originals. It’s probably a lot to do with the covers being by bands I like and originals being by ones I either don’t like or don’t like as much. Halestorm’s covers of Bad Romance and Get Lucky are great examples of a good band taking a bad song and making a great cover. Which reminds me, their third covers album just came out, and I think Ride the Lightning was on it. I wanna give that a listen.
@Mehsturbator You’re far more positive on covers as a whole than I am. I feel like I’ve heard a huge range, from horrible to great. There are a couple of exciting things about covers as compared to originals. They can create huge curiosity if you have a relationship with the original song. Also it’s fun when you get bamboozled thinking a song was an original like I recently did with Van Halen, Where Have All the Good Times Gone. Both angles of discovery are fun, but not always rewarding.
@f00l I saw that you played the cello at one point in time. Maybe you can appreciate these guys.
Apocalyptica - Not Strong Enough
I like the vocals from the album better, but I appreciate the video.
I saw them in concert last year. One of the most enjoyable concerts I’ve ever been to. They were in this super tiny venue, and I was about 2’ from the stage.
@RiotDemon They’re another band I like. It can be a little deceptive because the band itself is just instrumental, so anything you hear with vocals is a guest. But they’ve gotten some really good ones. It’s a nice mix of vocal styles on the whole, with pretty unique instrumental arrangements behind. You’ve got good taste in music!
@Mehsturbator did you listen to the last album they put out? They had a dedicated vocalist this time. Franky Perez, I believe is his name. He went and toured with them. He also sang some other songs like:
Apocalyptica - I’m not Jesus
@RiotDemon Ah, no, haven’t listened to it. Maybe heard a few songs and didn’t realize it though. I recognize that song though. I’ve always thought the vocals themselves were pretty good but it’s not my favourite song by them. Are the others like it or is more variety?
@Mehsturbator I meant to say, Cory Taylor did that song, but Franky sang it in concert.
To me it’s similar, I suppose.
Here’s one of Franky.
/youtube Apocalyptica House of Chains
@RiotDemon I knew whoever had done I’m Not Jesus sounded familiar!!! For whatever reason I really hate seeing “(feat. So and So)” on song titles or artists so I always go in and remove it (except, for whatever reason, on Shatter Me. Dunno why I didn’t remove that one. Maybe because Lzzy?), so I never really know who actually does it. I just always think “Man, they sound familiar…”
Gave House of Chains a listen. He’s pretty good, seems like a good fit for the band too.
@Mehsturbator I really enjoyed the entire album with him on it. I remember seeing on their YouTube and Facebook pages when it was first announced and people were angry that they were going away from being mostly instrumental. I love being able to sing along, so I don’t mind it at all. He had a ton of energy on stage and I felt like he really fit in with the band.
Fury of the Storm by DragonForce. Been my favourite song for over a decade now.
There are so many of metal genre. But the only metal band that i like is metallica. Can anyone recommend any good metal instrumental song that got great riff to enjoy
@thedronelover since you mentioned Metallica, let’s all take a few minutes to appreciate one of my favorites.
/youtube Metallica Orion
@thedronelover If you’re looking for purely instrumental and not something that’s laid back, the first thing that came to mind for me was The Crusade by Trivium. It’s an 8:19 song though.
Disarmonia Mundi - The Isolation Game
Don’t kill the messenger, please, this woman just said she IS your wife & she looked better than Kate Perry AND Taylor Swift combined so I thought, well, his name does sound like he would have an attractive wife. My Bad. Now, a few of my bands are #1-Metallica, others are God Smack, Disturbed, Led & Floyd, Conceal Carry ( just made that name up), Bill Halley & the Comets, and YES, I DO despise rap. I can listen to George Possum Jones, Cash or Haggard, but No, no Rap. Also, I like Korn, & since I’m old school I will still listen to Jimi Hendrix, the Cream, & the Stones w/Jamison Irish Whisky (straight in a glass).
@decoratedwarvet I’m flattered that you think I’d have an attractive wife, but I’m a straight woman. No wives for me.
@decoratedwarvet I saw Korn twice in the late 90s/early 2000s. Haven’t listened to much from them since then.
Still listening to Metallica even though I prefer their older stuff.
@RiotDemon Let us pretend Death Magnetic never happened.
As a follow up to this, I present the following videos:
/youtube Creed six feet
@mfladd Love this song. 5FDP does great heavy stuff but their softer ones are also really well done. Ivan has a good voice for it.
@Mehsturbator @mfladd I hate that a lot of people hate on them because they’re popular. Hate a band because you don’t like their music.
/youtube Five Finger Death Punch Bad Company
Do the Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin & BTO concerts I went to count?
@daveinwarsh I think the other groups lean more towards rock? (So many groups genre hop so it’s hard for me to say.) But I know Zeppelin has inspired many metal people to become musicians.
Any fun stories from your concerts?
@RiotDemon The LZ concert was amazing (what I remember of it) in the mid 70’s.
The San Diego Sports Arena is where I went to most concerts, also going to LA for a few others, from maybe 1969 into the later 70’s.
Most of these concerts were an actual cloud of pot-smoke filling the arena. I’d bring in a bota bag of something to drink…
The most fun concert was the Calif Jam in '74. It was outside & had a ton of bands. Very hot weather, I brought nothing to drink, very crowded & everyone just shared everything they had. Everything…
I found this a couple months back. And then I proceeded to listen to it a couple hundred times in the following months.
Does Volbeat count?
@thismyusername yep, they’re metal, they count. Sometimes I wish I could sing the opening at work.
@thismyusername His voice pretty much gives aural orgasms.
@Mehsturbator sorry no. more like auto-tunausea
@snapster @Mehsturbator
Did someone say tuna?
@PlacidPenguin did you know that the Big Mouth Billy Bass inventors are also the inventors of Veridesk? I met them and got their HQ building recommendations for our new HQ2
@snapster
I did not.
This came out about half an hour ago. Unleash the Archers have a new album (Apex) coming 2 June, and they’ve just released the video for the first single, Cleanse the Bloodlines. I am so stoked for this album to come out.
/youtube frog leap studios shape of you
They must play the original three times a day when I’m at work. Several businesses I frequent play the same Muzak station so chances are good that I’ll hear it on my days off as well. Song is very catchy. Too bad they can’t play this version.

Nuclear Blast’s Black Friday Sale has already begun. If you buy actual physical media, the stuff is pretty cheap depending on the band. Also, some clothing available:

@RiotDemon
This thread needs links to all your fabulous Goat MetalTober daily threads with musical introductions.
I’m not expecting you to do that. Don’t wanna make work for you.
Ok if I do it?
@f00l hey, thanks! I thought about eventually getting around to it, but was feeling pretty overwhelmed.
I basically wanted to just have a list that was the date, the topic, and the band(s).
Not all the bands were metal, but I would still include them just for a complete list. If you feel up to it, I thank you.
@RiotDemon
Wanted that plus a link to the thread.
Keep it lean, don’t make this one unloadable.
Will try to do it this weekend.
I still feel bad about not being there for you so much in Oct.
@f00l a link of course.
No worries, you can resurrect all the threads afterwards that speak to you.
Also: @OldCatLady already mentioned in RIP thread, but
A salute to Malcolm Young, founder and rhythm guitarist of AC/DC, who died at age 64.
I read he had early dementia.
Surely he was a kindred spirit.
Back In Black, baby!
From the days when huge bands didn’t need a wall and full security between themselves and their fans.

So damn catchy.
I know I listed it recently in my October threads, but I don’t care. I’m sure several of these old posts were resurrected there anyway.
Probably my most metal band I listen to
Just noticed this thread. I’m a big folk metal fan and also industrial metal, mostly NDH. I think this thread needs some Týr!
@mschuette thanks for joining the party!

New album coming out on January 11th, 2019.
Kicking it old school.
I’d put up some OG Skinny Puppy, but their visuals are an acquired … taste.
Since today’s write up dares to trash talk against this song, I must post it.

Jen Ledger, the drummer for Skillet, is currently touring as the solo act Ledger. Well, technically her band is currently on tour as part of Winter Jam.
Edited out the broken link
@msklzannie I’m not sure what’s wrong with your link, but Google isn’t helping me figure out what video you were trying to share. Can you just copy the URL again and give me the title so I can try to fix it? It’s coming back with some redirect error.
@RiotDemon I was having trouble finding the link when I tried to post it. And just using the “/youtube” command didn’t work (tried that first). So how about I just list the song?!? /shrug
Ledger “Not Dead Yet”
It’s posted both on YouTube and on her band’s website. www.ledgerband.com

@msklzannie this one?
@RiotDemon Yep
Rocking this at the moment:
That scene with the black latex on Chris’ face… 🥺
No thanks to Covid, my tix for Megadeth/Lamb of God/Trivium/In Flames are rescheduled for next year. Something to look forward to I guess.
@cinoclav how do you feel about In Flames rerecording Clayman?
/youtube in flames Clayman rerecorded
@RiotDemon Not really sure what their thought process was for doing so. Why fix something that wasn’t broken?
@cinoclav yes! Thank you! I hate it.
@cinoclav @RiotDemon I also had tickets for that show get canceled on me and also am not a fan of the new version of clayman.
@metaphore @RiotDemon They automatically rescheduled the date until next year for me. Gave me the option of a refund if I preferred but I was happy with my seats so I kept it as is.
@cinoclav @metaphore Clayman was either the first or second album I picked up from them so it’s very iconic to me. I wish they would of left it alone and created a new album instead.
Never seen them in person.
@cinoclav when it was canceled here they didn’t have new dates yet, I’m not sure if they do now or not, but I guess it was good I just opted for the refund since I’ve moved since then. But where I’m at now had the same tour canceled and has cheaper tickets so if this one gets rescheduled that would be nice.
