Well, I guess it’s time for Algernon Henry Blackwood, CBE to cast his literary spells. Blackwood was an occultist and outdoorsman, and his stories were aimed at conveying an idea of expanded consciousness, which you mightn’t think would be too horrible, but, well, his work certainly is atmospheric. Simone Simoncelli was a Parmese mannerist, hired by mercenary commander Pier Francesco Orsini to decorate the gardens he built at Bomarzo to assuage his grief at the death of his wife. The overall design of the gardens is attributed to Pirro Ligorio, with Simoncelli creating the sculptures.
