Got this last time. Works great with my Samsung Galaxy S6. The case I’ve got it in is an Otterbox, and its “grippy”, so it doesn’t slip. The speaker is ok, nothing special.
Yes, I’m buying two more. We want a couple downstairs in addition to the nightstand ones.
(Normal disclaimer applies: I help run this place, so I’m biased and I’m probably only buying these to trick you, not because I actually think they’re good.)
@mflassy See, the thing is, you’re being entirely too generos, and I’m totally unworthy. Therefore, I’m afraid I’m going to have to decline your most exceptional offer. Perhaps in the future, once I’ve realized my full potential of worthlessness, er, I mean worthiness, then I could accept your kindness.
@ruouttaurmind@mflassy
greed for lack of better word is good. Idea is if 40% value is return on 1, 120% is return on not wanting three. Which in turn can pay for one and shipping and going trouble of using it. So my friend, you get one for not wanting three! Where is greed in that? You will understand this mehinstein`s theory of valuetivity if you succeed in your strive for being worthy.
My two-year-old Motorola Droid Turbo 2 supports Qi, which I discovered a week ago after the charging port on my phone decided to stop working properly. Getting a wireless charger was a lot cheaper than buying a new phone.
Bought one for a gift then decided to keep it when I realized my Samsung Note8 is qi-ified. Agree the speaker is nothing special but it makes a nice nightstand pairing and my phone case is leather - so no slippage or any need for shims. Ended up replacing the gift by paying much more on Morningsave, Tempted to buy another tonight to use on my desk at work. Too tired to do the price averaging in my head (25+39+25)/3 - is it still a bargain?
@dave yeah. I did that math too. But I have no flat surfaces left on which to put the blasted things. Only one tonight: calamitous-peaceful-riddle. I’ll say.
@dave BTW I had an economics professor in college who used that precise line of thinking to assert why most people shouldn’t be allowed loose with their own money. His example product was Looney Tunes branded pens. For the next two years all the Econ Majors maintained an inside joke about the Tweety Bird Theory of Economics. I expect to see this false savings approach used in a meh write-up sometime soon.
@ihatemeh not as fast but i tend to use this overnight. Phone on the qi pad, podcast on the speaker…phone is a charged up in the morning and the speaker shuts itself off after not receiving a signal for some period of time. Not sure how long because I’m asleep when it happens.
New record, three purchases in a week. WTH Meh, you’re supposed to be posting truly awful crap instead of this merely, shall i say, mediocre, crap you’re getting lately.
Bought two last time. Ones on top of my piano, but you could put it on your organ if you shim it just right. I like them. Bought another for my desk at work.
Bought one last time. Fun fact: The speaker also charges wirelessly so if you’re away from the base but have another qi plate, you can charge the speaker
Anyone buy one of those sticky mats to use instead of a shim? I looked on Amazon when I first got it and noticed the problem but gave up… If anyone bought one and is using it to keep their phone from sliding off the pad I’d be interested in your experience / the link to purchase.
@fmanda The speaker does charge wirelessly somehow. Is it Qi-compatible, not sure, I didn’t try putting my phone where the speaker goes. You’d need at least 4 shims for that to work.
@djslack Maybe mine is broken then, but for the month that I’ve had it the speaker has never charged on the top part of the base unless the wire is plugged in.
@djslack@therealjrn For those following along at home, it looks like the speaker is at fault. I put two phones on the base (one in the regular spot, and one in the speaker spot) and they both charge. But the speaker won’t charge on any of my Qi chargers. So my opinion of the product as whole just shot up a whole bunch, despite the fact that mine is partially broken.
Not a big fan of “drinking the kool aid” analogy. Over 909 people were murdered by cyanide poisoning because of drinking kool aid laced with cyanide. Joking about cult mass murder isn’t funny or sardonic. ![people who drank the kool aid (NSFW IMAGE)
@pkingsley As a result of the Jonestown deaths, the phrase “drink the Kool-Aid” has entered the language as an idiom that means to mindlessly and unquestioningly do what those around you are doing. Idioms stay in a language long after the originating event, person, or institution has long been forgotten. For example, people still use the idiom “like gangbusters” all the time, but how many people alive today have listened to, or are even aware of, the Gang Busters radio drama serial that inspired it?
Just because people use a common idiom doesn’t mean that they are deliberately commemorating, celebrating, or “joking about” its originating event.
@pkingsley@mfladd I have to agree with mfladd. While I agree that the origin of the phrase is a horrible atrocity, I think the use of the phrase now is different. I would have bet a high percentage of younger people do not know the history without looking it up. I am old enough to remember the news reports coming in and the growing horror.
@mfladd I find the kool aid line and the pictures to be equivalent. Everyone anyone hears ‘drink the kool aid’, should visualize what that means, from where the phrase originates. Its not a joking matter. My guess is you are a kid and did not live this. Kool aid and jokes about being gassed in ovens are the same genre. I expect you will blow this of with typical young white male bravado (correct?), but I also expect the next time you use or see Kool Aid, you just might remember that for a lot of people, the phrase is evocative and not funny. peace. Bought one the first time around. It’s a total steal at this price. Just bought two more. Charges my iPhone 8 through its case, no problem. Charges my Samsung through its case, no problem. Even charges the POS BlackBerry work gave me, no problem. The speaker is impressively loud and clear for a $25 purchase.
The only caveat: You need to charge the speaker up before you try to use it out-of-the-box. I recommend using the included USB cable for the first charge; it’ll be quicker. If you don’t charge the speaker for a while, it won’t pair with anything. And you can’t pair it while it’s charging.
@macwhiz which Blackberry has qi? I don’t remember a model POS but I might have missed one. Got a few BB10 devices kicking around somewhere. I am a sucker for orphaned technology,

Got this last time. Works great with my Samsung Galaxy S6. The case I’ve got it in is an Otterbox, and its “grippy”, so it doesn’t slip. The speaker is ok, nothing special.
@eeterrific I got it too. I wish the speaker was louder, but I like that it also wirelessly charges.
@eeterrific Just so I’m informed - is this a special Otterbox? or does it charge through the case?
@themutilator thru the case. case side down. takes a little longer to charge than using the cable, but I’m happy with it. Not a special case.
Works on pixel XL?
@yugrudfooz
Nah.
The Pixel devices don’t support recharging the device wirelessly.
@mflassy unless you can find an add-on battery pack or case with wireless charging capabilities
@medz @yugrudfooz
Fine.
Out of the box, the Pixel does not support recharging wirelessly.
You could use an add-on, but the speed would be slower than using a Type-C to Type-C cable.
Then again, the whole point is to NOT use another cable.
But… This recharger requires a cable anyways.
Although to be fair, it’s not being plugged in directly to the phone.
Ok… Fine…
Use an add-on, and enjoy slower recharging speeds compared to using a Type-C to Type-C cable.
@mflassy I wouldn’t, just saying possible.
