It depends on who I am today. If I am a cleric (healer) a knife is a scalpel and is used to heal. If I am a rogue (thief) a knife is an object used to slit ropes and cut open things to help me get what I need. If i am an assassin a knife is an essential part of my job, because sometimes, things are up close and personal. If I am a hunter a knife is for skinning my kill. If I am a collector a knife is an object for my shelf and for me to take down and fondle when the mood strikes.
As I am a gamer, a knife is all these things and it helps me cut my steak, butter my bread, carve a roast, slice the cheese and otherwise feed my mouth.
I'm so good with a knife that I bring them to gunfights.
