Two years so two different guys. Mostly nice. But one athletic guy had swim practice at 7AM so would get up and make noise about 6AM. I did admire that he went across campus by bike in Winter mornings and swim in an outdoor pool. Not for me; I seldom got to bed before 1-2AM.
First guy married a girl down the hall and I was at their wedding. Wonder how they are doing.
Second guy, his father was a pilot and flew up on a small plane and took us on a sightseeing trip of the area. Then we went on his dad’s sailboat in San Francisco and somehow I dropped the keys in the water handing them to him. Don’t boat owners always use floaty things on them? Well, they didn’t! I think his dad had to drive up with spare keys
My first roommate was nice. My second one gave me the sense she thought she was better than me. My third was kind of a basket case, but it seems she turned out okay. My next one was a really good friend; I stood up in her wedding, but we haven’t spoken in years for whatever reason. I moved to an apartment afterward with three women I am forever indebted to for the way they cared for me despite me being a pain in the ass.
This question is phrased as though one should only have a single roommate in college. Is it just me? Am I the weird one who had multiple?
I had two roommates. One was an Irish guy from Long Island, NY. 'nuf said. The other requires a bit of back story In high school I dated a girl for several years. Her family moved to California at the start of my senior year. It turned out that my other roommate’s older brother was dating her older sister. Unpredictable small world. BUT… we recently reconnected and it turns out they got married and had a bunch of kids and live less than an hour from me. Not sure what the odds of that are
The girl I was placed with as my first roommate ended up dating this girl from down the hall. That girl’s roommate asked me if I wanted to be roommates with her, so then we could leave those girls to their own devices. So that girl became my second and last roommate, still friends now almost 30 years later
I stayed home and went to local college so never had a roommate, missed the whole experience. I don’t know if that was a good or a bad thing. I still had a great time and partied a hell of a lot a colleges.
My first roommate was kind of a toolbag and a bit of a try hard. By the end of freshman year I am pretty sure I wanted to string him up after he ratted me out for an extended prank on someone who turned out to be a complete psychopath. If I saw him now, I’d probably still feel the urge to punch him in the nuts.
Another guy across the hall also had a roommate that sucked, so we decided to be roommates the next year. He turned out to be super awesome and we were roommates for the next four years. He became one of my best friends. We don’t talk often but still catch up from time to time.
I didn’t live in the dorms, but shared apartments with several different people. The worst turned out to be my former best friend from high school! She talked to me nonstop, even following me into my room if I tried to get away, and I was too shy at the time to try to stop her. She also left the shared dishes in the sink for AGES along with stinky empty tuna cans. We didn’t remain friends …
I graduated from high school a semester early then moved to France for 6 months. When I came back to the states I moved to Colorado to attend CU in Boulder. As it was too expensive for me to be an out-of-state student, I decided to live there for a year and work to establish my residency, so never really lived in a dorm.
I did I have an apartment with 2 Dutch roommates for a couple of years. When they graduated I moved into a townhouse with a couple of friends and a woman that would eventually become my wife a few months later.
Next year will be our 50th anniversary.
In my senior year I wound up in an six-bedroom “suite” on the eighth floor of an old dorm (it was very cheap.) There was one room with three guys, one room for one guy, and one room for two guys. I wound up in the two, and Monty and I were good friends; I was on okay terms with the others. Two of them moved in with girlfriends during the year, leaving one guy in the three-room section; we used to call him Reefer Madness because he was pretty much constantly stoned; I don’t know how he got through classes.
It was the custom in exam season for @55holes to set off the fire alarm at night. One time it went off and I looked over at Monty’s bed and he just pulled the pillow over his head so I did the same. However not long afterwards we started hearing cries of “FIRE!”
We got up and went to the hall door: the hall was like solid smoke, the carpets being some cheap polyester blend that gave off that plastic smell when on fire. It turned out that upon hearing the alarm Reefer Madness had gone to the door, smelled smoke and left the building. The three of us remaining wrapped wet towels around our heads and ran down the corridor to the exit stair, which needless to say was crowded and just so’s you know it’s very hard to breathe through a wet towel, if it ever happened again I wouldn’t wet it as I had to take the towel away from my face to breathe which was of course breathing smoke! But you could see a little ways once we were below the third floor.
I don’t entirely blame RM because it’s entirely possible he was not exactly sober but I can’t say I miss him!

@capnjb that’s kind-of a cool weird story.

@togle nice. It would probably be impolite to ask about the devices.
@pmarin Believe me, we all found out way too much about their devices in those first several weeks before the school allowed us to trade roommates

… Can’t imagine why?!!

You can’t make up a better story than that.
