We are enjoying the last few days of summer at my favorite hotel in DC. I had an interesting encounter yesterday and shared it with my facebook friends. And after a bit of pondering, I thought I’d share it here.

So the girls are off to a museum and I went to Ebbitts for some oysters. Walked around the area for a bit. It’s hot. But as I was getting back to the hotel I passed a guy. Tall… maybe 6’ 4". No shirt, just shorts and sandals. A bit disheveled. I hate to judge but I’d put money on that he was homeless. I gave him a nod as we passed and he gave one back. Then I stopped for a moment to reflect. I spun around and caught up to him and walked beside him for a bit. I asked if he was doing okay, and he said he was having a good day. We were right outside a CVS so I asked him if he needed anything and he said, no, it’s been a good day. Then he reached out his hand and offered me a cigarette. Marlboro Reds. What I smoked in my youth. I said no, but thank you. My wife would kill me if I did. We both had a good laugh at that and a short chat and then both continued on our paths.

Don’t forget everyone you pass is human. Go be human.
