Youāre not supposed to eat something youāre on first name terms with, according to Through the Looking Glass:
You look a little shy; let me introduce you to that leg of mutton,ā said the Red Queen. āAliceāMutton; MuttonāAlice.ā The leg of mutton got up in the dish and made a little bow to Alice; and Alice returned the bow, not knowing whether to be frightened or amused. āMay I give you a slice?ā she said, taking up the knife and fork, and looking from one Queen to the other.
āCertainly not,ā the Red Queen said, very decidedly: āit isnāt etiquette to cut any one youāve been introduced to. Remove the joint!ā And the waiters carried it off, and brought a large plum-pudding in its place. āI wonāt be introduced to the pudding, please,ā Alice said rather hastily, āor we shall get no dinner at all. May I give you some?ā But the Red Queen looked sulky, and growled āPuddingāAlice; AliceāPudding. Remove the pudding!ā and the waiters took it away so quickly that Alice couldnāt return its bow.
@Kyeh
Very true and I thought about that while asking the question ādoes anyone name their turkeyā. I certainly couldnāt eat one of our turkeys from the yard (when we had them) but just in fun calling our Thanksgiving turkey Loretta was something different.
I still just canāt believe more people donāt do it⦠Oh wellā¦
@Kyeh@Lynnerizer I am reminded of the bit in Douglas Adamsā The Restaurant at the End of the Universe where the Dish of the Day introduces itself and makes recommendations of its best cuts.
I used to have a tradition of getting Chinese food every thanksgiving until I experienced someā¦ummmā¦gastric distress. Iāve not had Chinese food since.
@kittykat9180 If I did that every time something gave me a tummy ache, letās just say my doctor might be happy for me, but my taste buds would become very depressed.
@kittykat9180
I canāt remember if it is Christmas or Thanksgiving that no other restaurants are open. Thatās why I thought Chinese was an option, the ONLY option if you werenāt going to cook. Lol
Iām very grateful not to have stomach issues like my mom has gotten in the last few years. Sheās got to eat a very bland diet now and thatās not much fun. I was shocked to hear that she even had to give up chocolate! Oh, the poor thingā¦
@Lynnerizer my mom has had major digestive issues the last several years. I suspect she needs diet changes but my dad is too selfish to make adjustments to find the problem.
@kittykat9180
Oh no, thatās unfortunate. Hoping your dad has a change of heart and your mom gets what she needs. Iām sure itās very uncomfortable to be having those kinds of problems. My mom has been so much more comfortable now that sheās figured out what she can and canāt eat. Prayers for the both of them.
@Lynnerizer itās been 47 years of him selfishly neglecting the needs of his family for his own wants, I donāt think heāll change now.
It certainly impacts her quality of life. In the rare instances she takes a flight, she wonāt eat 24 hours prior so that she doesnāt have an accident during the flight.
I feel bad for her.
My mother used to tell me that sometimes that would happen when she was young. But they raise the turkey and butchered the turkey so that might be different
I remember a holiday meal at a cousin of my momās where they had a roast pig with an apple in its mouth. They kept referring to the pig as āGeorgeā.
@Lynnerizer we donāt name our turkey but we used to name our bacon seeds when we had pigs. I always found it so intriguing that we had friends that wouldnāt order sides from us because they didnāt like the idea that theyād known where it was raised. Itās so strange to me. They had the most amazing lives and were fed the best things! I get it if youāre a vegan and opposed to eating animals full stop. I just donāt get wanting to eat something wrapped in cling film on a styrofoam try that likely spent a good portion of its life shoulder to shoulder covered in the excrement of all its pen mates. But I guess Iāve always been a weirdo.
@sillyheathen
YES to free range!
I totally get it how much better fresh meat/poultry/fish is rather than the stuff that comes from the grocery store. But⦠with that being said I also totally get the other side of it! When I was little I refused to eat anything that was still in the shape of a animal, I just couldnāt stomach it! My mom would even try to fool me by filleting fresh fish and then pulling it out of the freezer and telling me she had just thawed it! It never worked! Lol Thank goodness I eventually grew out of it. Well, at least for the most part. I still donāt like seeing the striations of the meat on a turkey or chicken drumstick but it doesnāt keep me from eating it. How big was your farm and do you still have it?
Iām with @Kyeh, what the heck are bacon seeds? š«
@Kyeh@Lynnerizer I had six acres on an 80 acre farm. I had an acre of veggies. I also raised various heritage chickens. I mainly raised Black Copper Marans but also kept some blue layers and wound up getting super geeky with the egg color genetics. I also had a flock of bourbon red turkeys. I think I had three Toms and eight or nine hens. Then there were the French bresse which we raised for meat. All the birds had had half acre pastures that were subdivided so they always had fresh grass. We raised the pigs on a similar set up. We had hot fences but they had access to fresh pastures from their barn 24/7. I loved raising them. They were insanely smart and funny. We would give them huge batches of pulp and fruit from our pressing of plums, pears and apples. A few times they basically left them to ferment and got drunk off the spoils. It was pretty entertaining. I loved farming. The Englishman wasnāt as big a fan.
@Kyeh@sillyheathen
That is so cool! Wow, 80 acres, fun for all! What a great life that must have been! I would have loved to do the geeky color egg thing, what fun! Black eggs from the black marlins, right? Do they taste any different than regular brown or white eggs? I could have loved that life!
Jeez, we were elated when just one of our hens went broody and hatched her own clutch! Lol
@Kyeh@Lynnerizer Iāll have to see if I can find any pictures of their eggs. I got really geeky with the egg color genetics and breeding. It was pretty cool. My Marans laid between a 6-9 on the Marans scale. Some of my olive eggers laid the coolest green eggs. Some were truly olive or sage and then I had a gen that was probably 3rd gen and she laid eggs that looked fake. They looked like theyād be a marshmallow in a box of lucky charms. It was bananas. And honestly the birds were just funny. Even the turkeys were really friendly.
@chienfou@Kyeh@Lynnerizer we lived around the corner from the store they used for the feminist bookstore in NE Portland back in the day. I love Portland but it really is or was close to the show. Some people are so beyond mind boggling. Over all I would say people as a whole are really great here but a definitive smorgasbord of personalities. And we truly did have people like this come into the last restaurant we worked in. Granted we were known for sourcing all of our food as locally as was physically possible. It was hilarious having them ask if the pigs/chickens had names etc.

Itās a sketch show. Generally each episode has two or three or more sketches some of which are started at the beginning and completed towards the end of the show. They come back to recurring themes so some of them will have recurring characters. It was very quirky and sometimes seems to be way over the top but was spot on a lot of other times.
