How old are "oldies"?: Shoddy Goods 106
2Something’s definitely wrong with time - 2010 has got to be just a few years ago, not 16. And there’s no way Nirvana’s Nevermind is closer to Ella Fitzgerald’s songbook era than today. What shocks you when you think back to things that sure seem recent, but are apparently just a billboard telling us how very old we’re getting? Let’s talk in this week’s Shoddy Goods chat.

Almost 40 years ago I bought tickets to an Aerosmith concert for me and a buddy from Ticketmaster at Hecht’s in the mall. Lawn seats. We met twins and they snuck us in and we ended up with 8th row seats. There was some band opening for them that no one had heard of. I think their name was Guns 'n Roses. Wasn’t a bad show.
And the tickets were $16. Heh.

@capnjb I caught that tour, too. The finishing act was Deep Purple. We came straight home after the show, but I still got grounded for missing my curfew! (I was there very specifically for GnR, thanks to heavy airplay on college station WSOU)
@capnjb I saw Aerosmith back in 1978-or-9 at the Portland Coliseum. I wasn’t a big fan at the time, but it was a pretty good show. Yeah, the sub-$20 concert tickets back then were nice. (My kids aren’t sure if I’m serious when I mention that now.

I have some T-shirts that date back to trips to six flags with my daughter when she was a teen. She’s past 45 now!
@chienfou Yeah, my oldest (daughter) turned 41 last April. Just doesn’t seem possible…
“Oldies” to me are 50s and 60s doo-wop and The Beatles type music.
“Classic Rock” is the 70s Creedance, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and The Who type music.
There’s 80s music, split into pop and Synth pop
Then there’s the 90s and early 00s, which is the best music and anything since then sucks
Time is a human construct. Constructs are just labels we give to things so we stop grunting at everything. Reality doesn’t exist the way it used to.
My 40 year old NES ZIF somehow still works better than my joints do.
OBD2 being the new diagnostics standard for cars. While it didn’t eliminate all the proprietary aspects set by a manufacturer, at least basic diagnostics was no longer a mystery.
That came out in 1996 – which is 30 years ago meow.
For some of us, anything after the millennium will always be just a few years ago.
Back in the early 70’s while living in Philly I recorded “oldies” music on reel to reel tapes thinking that I would never hear that played again. Fast forward, now I can hear those songs with better quality on You Tube, Amazon Music, etc. Although there are still some song titles that are not out there, I can still dig out some of my old Napster downloads to fill in the gaps. I would still like to relive some of those nights listening to WKBW, KDKA, or WABC on a crackly tube radio.
