Goat Day 6: Speaker Docks... Why did it have to be Speaker Docks?
5Good afternoon. I had every intention on continuing on my rant about the yearly planning that goes into attending SDCC, but I decided to change it up a bit. It's Friday, I'm kind of drained, I'm driving to Philadelphia tomorrow, I need to keep this brief. I'll follow up with that topic on Sunday or Monday.
ODDS & ENDS
Some days you come into work and it's just your normal, typical work day. Other days there are a chain of events that leave you shaking your head. I receive an e-mail today stating "You have been removed from your Creative Cloud team. Please contact your administrator if this was done in error." Thoughts like "Did I just get fired?" barrel through your cerebral cortex like a bull in a china shop. "Did they not tell me?" It didn't help that because I didn't have access, I could go in and do my work.
So I start poking around. My teammate isn't even in that team. My local IT guy was backlogged... The people my teammate asks seem not to help.... And then I get a phone call from a guy down in Nebraska. It turns out he removed me from the team to "Wake up the IT team down in New York City for adding random people to his Creative Cloud Team without his permission." So in the great rift between our production team in the Midwest and our IT overlords in NYC, I was just a mere casualty. I was quickly given access back. "I tried to wake them up, I told them I'd do it.... I guess they didn't listen." Gotta love being a pawn.
TODAY'S DEAL
No.
THE FEED BAG
No real direct questions for me, so I hope I get some over the weekend. I do love the stories you guys are providing. Helps to know you're not alone.
TODAY'S QUESTION
What kind of office politics/differences have you gotten swept up in? It can be stuff you caused, were directly involved in, or like me.... a pawn.
As I mentioned, I'll be traveling to Philadelphia, so it'll be a road edition of the Goat Journal. Short and sweet.
Until then, T.G.I.-BLEAT!!!!!!

Office politics are the worst. One day I was so tired of people asking me for my opinion on office BS, that I started asking people what color they thought Jesus was. They weren't as interested in getting involved in that conversation, which was nice.

@JonT Just because something is possible to do doesn't mean that it should be done. Now I'm going to have to poke out my mind's eye to get rid of that image.
@JonT Oh dear. That photo is disturbing on so many levels. But ... goat... So yeahhh!!!
@JonT This gif is taking many minutes to load each time I access this thread, and basically freezing up my computer whilst loading. The damn thing is 60MB!
@SIMBM it was doing the same for me, so I switched it back to the .gifv which is unfortunately not converted automatically :(
@JonT just let it goat.
@Thumperchick here's a downconverted gif, sadly very choppy and much smaller
I work for local government. You don't know politics until you've worked for local government. We have "office politics." We have inter-agency politics. We have "our bosses are bitching about each other on the evening news" politics. And it's all pretty intense. And unfortunately it does directly impact what we do from day-to-day. As in it changes the whole agenda.
I too am a pawn. I just try to do my job and make my immediate bosses happy. And we're tossed around but the elected leaders mostly like us, so, I mean, the fact that we're always adjusting course is super annoying, but it's less stressful than it would be if they really hated us.
And somehow your mention of pawn, makes me think of prawns.
@joelmw pr0nz?
@billlehecka Make sure to have some good beer & cheesesteaks while in Philadelphia!
Texas peeps should check out Texadelphia. http://www.texadelphia.com/ My first wife was from the Philly area and we would go from one poser to another. She declared Texadelphia authentic. And I loved it too. Alas, glutens.
skip the cheesesteaks. get a roast pork sandwich w/ provolone & brocoli rabe. trust me on this. roast pork goodness
it's not just me!
@ekw this is terrible advice. @BillLehecka you should eat both a cheesesteak AND a roast pork sandwich, obviously.
@JonT @BillLehecka Start with the cheesesteak, just stay away from the tourist traps like Pat's and Geno's. If you can make it to John's Roast Pork in time (they're not open past 4ish), get the cheesesteak. Personally, I hate broccoli rabe so I skip the roast pork anywhere since they seem to always go together. Edit: OMG OMG OMG - Just looked at John's website and it says starting this past Monday they're open until 7pm now! The God's have answered many prayers.
What type of work do you do? I must know what people hope to accomplish with a Creative Cloud team heh.
By the way I hate office politics so much that it's one of the several reasons I work for myself in my own business (selling online) from my own home. No office politics but nobody to take a coffee break with either. It can be overwhelming and difficult but basically I love it.
@billLehecka I could go for days about work place bs but instead, I've enjoyed this month goat. And because it is so enjoyable, and surpasses mediocrity, this not allowed. So explains how you might rectify this
I work in a secure facility with name badge key cards. Every time mine fails to open one of the doors I have that "am l fired?" Moments
@MsELizardBeth I worked for a company when a couple worked there; he was always there, but she did a lot of work from home. One day she attemped to log into the work computers, and failed. So, she called up the IT department and asked what was going on. After a little bit, they came back and told her it was fixed, which it was. When her husband got home, she found out that there had been layoffs that day. She then figured out she had been one of the people laid off, but because she hadn't been officially notified (had to be done in person), the IT department did not have the authority to tell her the real reason her login didn't work. So they just reinstated her access for the day.
@MsELizardBeth I've been having problems with my account getting locked out (something to do with email access on my iPhone and iPad, we think; it's correct and then it's not; WTF?). I keep having not so much "am I fired?" but "have I been discovered and am I about to be fired?" moments (because of all of the inappropriate internet activity. And here now they have my confession that my internet activity is inappropriate (the meh, the Spotify, the miscellaneous non-work-related information gathering) . . .
@joelmw The warlight... the homework for grad school... yep...
@MsELizardBeth There's so much that I can't get to now that I feel somewhat justified in accessing everything that I can. Never mind that I have to edit my registry, bring in software that I downloaded at home and find backdoors to do so.
@joelmw I've seen that happen on hosted Exchange accounts that aren't tied back to a login account- you'll change your login password, and then decide to change your email password. It'll then take time for every system to recognize the new password and if your lockout setting is low (10 is low enough), your desktop email client or your mobile device can trip it by trying the old password repeatedly. I usually have to reset the password a second time, run through the repair account wizard, and then have the user type in the password once more when they open up the email client.
@dashcloud I'm pretty sure that our Exchange is local, but I'm not at all sure that it's not somehow messed up. And we used to have some kinds of bits of 365 here, but, yeah, things are fucked up.
