@FearTheNoFear I live a few miles down the road from Halloweentown. The chamber of commerce got the giant jack-o’-lantern and some of the sets and hosts a month long tourist trap, er, celebration every Oct. This year they added a recycled Stone Henge set and have the main actress from the movie appearing for autographs and such. Super cheesy and an embarrassment to most locals.
I’m off step with most folks here as I don’t much care for comedy and slasher flicks put me to sleep. I prefer horror films to be spooky, not gory. Mostly of Guillermo del Toro’s work fits the bill, for example.
@Lazymuse21 Halloween is to All Hallows as Christmas eve is to Christmas. Halloween (Hallowed evening) kicks off a three day long holiday. In whole, Dia de Los Muertos runs October 31 through November 2. All Hallows Eve (October 31), All Hallows or All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2). It goes back to the Celtic harvest festival of Samhain. Gaels believed that the walls between the living world and the spirit world were very thin at this time, hence the appearance of ghosts and goblins threatening tricks and demanding treats. It was traditional to set a place at dinner for lost loved ones, and to put a candle in the window to guide them home.
@moondrake Yes that’s all true, but it still stands that Nightmare doesn’t happen during Halloween as Halloween is only 1 day of All Hallows. Also, the characters in the movie aren’t celebrating All Hallows. “There’s only 365 days left until next Halloween!” - Mayor. There isn’t an All Hallows door in the forest. And the question wasn’t your favorite movie that takes place during Halloween “time”.
I love most of these movies, but I think my favorite Halloween movie will forever be The Halloween Tree. I loved learning about all the spooky traditions around the world and I remember being absolutely terrified for Pip the first time I saw it.
I think this movie is the reason that I take Halloween so seriously.
Well, that and because it’s the day I met my handsome husband.
Halloween- only the first one.
Election Day 2016. (More than close enough, I think.)

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
I’ve not seen, or didn’t especially like, the movies in the poll, so I did a Google search to find this list of movies set on Halloween.
@baqui63 That is a awesome movie! Loved it!
Hocus Pocus. Bette Midler’s performance is so ridiculously over the top it cracks me up every time.
E.T.!
Just watched Death Becomes Her for the first time last night. It is impressively weird.
None of the Scream films I’ve seen take place during Halloween. Maybe the TV show does?
ParaNorman.
How about The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.
We’ve turned watching Trick r Treat into the annual tradition for Halloween night

Halloweentown. It’s my favorite fall time movie.

Doesn’t The Nightmare Before Christmas start the day after Halloween. So technically it’s not during Halloween.
