Any movie based around a desert setting; ie…Dune(either version), Prince of Persia, any of the Mummy movies, The English Patient, Ishtar(if you like crap), Cast Away…warm snacks required: hot coco, s’mores, spicy food, nachos, jalapeño poppers…
Movies can be replaced by board games.
The “Knives Out” trilogy is an entertaining binge, for those who like mysteries with a little black comedy. Same goes for the BBC version of “Sherlock” with Benedict Cumberbatch – one of the best series of all time, of any genre (IMHO).
@ircon96 Touché - it was very mysterious!
I do think I should watch Knives Out, it sounds really clever.
I also signed up for MHz Choice because they offered a big discount so I should get back to watching some of those series instead of noodling around on Instagram so much.
@Kyeh It really is great, especially Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc, he’s quite the character! I just recently watched the 3rd one, “Wake Up Dead Man” & it’s definitely a worthy entry in the franchise. The 2nd one, “Glass Onion,” was entertaining, but I’d rank it 3rd on the watch list.
@Kyeh PS - Yes, MhZ sounds good, I’d never heard of it before you first mentioned it awhile back. I’m with you, i love mysteries, especially foreign ones, like you mentioned before. Then again, i tend to like foreign films in general, especially French, British & the various Scandinavian countries – they all have a unique…“je ne sais quoi.”
@Kyeh Oops, i left out South Korean mystery/suspense/crime thrillers – although the ones that come to mind are way too dark &/or gory for your taste, IIRC! Lol
@ircon96 Oh, are they? I’ve certainly avoided Squid Game, it sounds brutal.
I really like the Scandinavian, Italian & French ones but I’ve fallen way behind.
@therealjrn We’re hardy enough to go to an ice cream shop in frigid weather, bundled up in our winter outerwear, and walk around holding our cone in our mittened hands! (Yes, I’ve done that.)
I have a good friend named Earl. When the whole “they/them” pronouns thing first started, he wrote a hilarious letter to the editor declaring that, by virtue of his name, he was henceforth going to be using the royal we.
(Which isn’t technically proper, but it’s funny.)
(He’s not against alternative pronouns, just “they/them” because it’s so damn confusing, and I agree. I find myself rereading things to see who was the other person I missed. But if someone insists on being addressed that way I go along to be considerate.)
My daughter and her family are in Nashville. Power’s been off since overnight Saturday to sunday. About 200k are in the same boat in the area. Thankfully she’s been able to keep her phones and tablet charged. Legos, games, puzzles seem to be the order of the day!
@Kyeh@macromeh
Hm… The only accident that I know of (this last go-around) was a semi rear-ended a plow truck. So I suppose a heavy semi couldn’t stop as fast…interesting.
If you have Amazon prime I just discovered that they have Monty Python again, and a Kids in the Hall streaming station in addition to just the normal Kids in the Hall. Also Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, which is making me nostalgic for the 80’s in a way I really wasn’t expecting.
@mossygreen re: Monty Python - it looks like they are now charging extra for episodes, even if you have Amazon Prime.
(Also, they are showing ads on some videos even if you are paying extra for no ads. )
At least that is what I am seeing.
@macromeh Huh, I was watching last week without problem (but with ads), but I only got 6 episodes in. I’ll have to take a look and perhaps modify my viewing plans.
@mossygreen I think they allow viewing the first season free (with ads), but charge for later seasons.
So I guess I’ll have to dust off my DVD set of the whole TV series to continue. ( I’m due to re-watch my DVD of Brazil, too.)
In case you haven’t seen it, this Kennedy Center Honors mini-concert (for Sir Paul McCartney) does not suck.
Maybe 20 min?
/youtube Kennedy Center Paul McCartney
@f00l
*The Trump Kennedy Center
@f00l @therealjrn Hahaha

@therealjrn
It was still the Kennedy Center at that time.
Incidentally if you check the video shots of the “honorees and presidents area”, I’m pretty sure that’s Laura Bush sitting with the Obamas.
@f00l Oh, it still is, I was just teasing.
@therealjrn
Re now, i dunno. Who knows what anything is now?
Esp thx to ”AI”
@f00l Did you happen to catch Mr Obama and Mr Trump chatting it up grandly at Jimmy Carter’s funeral?
@f00l Anyway the politics thread is closed ATM. We shouldn’t start stirring the puddin’.
@therealjrn
/giphy stir stir

@therealjrn
(Shhh. Let’s not)
@f00l Oh, I would never!! 🫢
USA Today had a good list of cold weather movies, but they were all rentals…a note at the bottom said they may get referral money.
It’s like you can’t even trust the newspapers nowadays!

@jkawaguchi Good list!
@jkawaguchi @Kyeh Cast Away is a good one to make us feel better about being snow/icebound… especially if you like ice skating.
WILSON!!
@ircon96 @jkawaguchi @Kyeh ISHTAR
@ircon96 @jkawaguchi @mossygreen Okay, that sounds fun!

@ircon96 Huh?
@Kyeh Sorry, i accidentally entered my reply to the previous question as a separate post. All better now! Lol
@Kyeh PS - i could always say it was part of the “mystery” theme.
@ircon96 Touché - it was very mysterious!

@ircon96 @Kyeh The Knives Out movies are great. Even the worst of the three is worth watching multiple times.
I belong in New England. I’m happy here even with all this snow and a broken snowblower.
@ItalianScallion
But not a broken spirit gosh darn it!
@therealjrn We’re hardy enough to go to an ice cream shop in frigid weather, bundled up in our winter outerwear, and walk around holding our cone in our mittened hands! (Yes, I’ve done that.)
@ItalianScallion @therealjrn Is that the royal we?
@Kyeh @therealjrn I speak on behalf of true New Englanders.
@ItalianScallion @therealjrn “our cone” sounded rather regal.

@chienfou
…Day 5 today. I think they feel it’s starting to get old…
@chienfou Oh no! They had a story on the news about a Nashville family who had pipes burst in the cold, so now they can’t even stay in their house.
@Kyeh
Father Dodge their bullet. I think they’re keeping water barely running at all the faucets etc in the house…
@Kyeh
d’oh… so far they dodged the bullet…
BTW the current estimate is a week from now (2/8) before power is back on at their house!
@chienfou Yeesh! Have they been able to carry on going to work & school?
@Kyeh
he’s WFH she and the grand go back to school tomorrow…
@chienfou I bet it will be kind of a relief for your daughter & granddaughter.
@Kyeh
I’m sure it will be. SILwas able to “WFH” Friday at their friend’s house.
I’m just a simple Okie, I literally didn’t know “they” did this.
@therealjrn That’s smart.
@therealjrn @Kyeh Seems like there might be a tradeoff vs. longer stopping distances (due to more mass/inertia) on slick roads.
@macromeh @therealjrn Oh, huh.
@Kyeh @macromeh
The only accident that I know of (this last go-around) was a semi rear-ended a plow truck. So I suppose a heavy semi couldn’t stop as fast…interesting.

Just realized that Lodge 49 isn’t on Hulu anymore, but if you have AMC+ you should go watch it.
