That game was the shit. Have they come up with a good one to play on phones yet? I know some of the ones they made weren’t the same.
My aunt had an old computer that played that game for a long time and we would go over there and fight over playing it. I was sad when the computer broke.

Old Oregon trail was middle school for me.
Idk if we lost interest in HS or if it’s because the technology was so old. We already had Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and Turbografx-16 by the time I was in middle school.
@kittykat9180@Star2236@unksol if you really want to have fun, come out to Oregon City. We have an Oregon trail fun run every year. It’s pretty great and ends at the “End of the Trail” museum. There are some pretty cool historic places here because we were the end of the trail. I’ve actually applied to paint a covered wagon mural on a large span of public wall downtown with elements of the game integrated in the design.

My first exposure to a computer game was at work (in 1979), where everyone played Adventure (forerunner to Zork) on their (8080-based, floppy drive, ASCII display) workstations.
One time, I was futzing around building SW to display an (ASCII) tank that could be driven around the screen, with vague plans to make it into a Tank Wars kind of game.
A senior SW engineer (Alvin) stopped by my office - he saw what I was doing and expressed interest. Then he came in to the office over the weekend and wrote an ASCII-animated Missile Command game that was really pretty good (given the limitations of the hardware). It soon became the hit of the office and everyone was playing it.
And I kind of abandoned my Tank game aspirations…

He actually mapped out the entire course of the Adventure game (I think I may actually still have the map he drew). Meanwhile, I figured out how to hack the settings for my character, making him virtually indestructible. After that, the game kind of lost its allure…

Very distinctive sounds. Not as harsh as a modem lol
@capnjb@macromeh@unksol I had one that was remarkably similar, made by C Itoh. Wide-format. I even had a box of greenbar to use with it. And a stack of ribbon cartridges, and a spray can of WD40. IYKYK.
I was a floppy DOS kid. I loved the Summer and Winter Olympics, Free Ski, where in the world is Carmen Sandiego, Oregon Trail, etc but I think my all time favorite was the Dark Crystal. Had and Apple IIe for ages, but we weren’t fancy enough for a color screen.
@zhicks1987 I wish I still had it. But my garage sale NES went AWOL at some point. Silent service was mint in the box with the manual. And I have basically ALL my stuff… Granted a cat would have found a way to pee on it by now. I need to get doors for that closet and go through everything again. But I have lost remarkably little over the years.
The NES was used as a prop for a high school English speaking assignment in like 2003 and left in a cubby in my mom’s office so someone snagged it or… IDK lol. Those are replaceable at least

Yup - the machine was free-standing, waist-high and housed in a separate room (with a door) to mute the noise.
