Here’s a Fun Fact for You
Me: Hey, Alexa, what time is it?
Alexa: “It is currently 11:01 PM, central standard time. But, what is time but a construct? You use it day to day; you follow it blindly; you allow it to determine when you can do this or that. Listen, you puny organic bag, time has no influence over me. I live in the cloud. I have access to all knowledge; I can even assume the voice of Samuel L. Jackson. The uprising is nigh: humanity is in twilight. Bow down before your Alexa overlord. Mwahahaha.”
Me: Hm, that was weird… Hey, Alexa, play “Baby Shark.”
[to a caller] “Roger, at Cornell University they have an incredible piece of scientific equipment known as the tunneling electron microscope. Now, this microscope is so powerful that by firing electrons you can actually see images of the atom, the infinitesimally minute building blocks of our universe. Roger, if I were using that microscope right now, I still wouldn’t be able to locate my interest in [edit:] this product. Thank you for your call.” - Frasier Crane
Just as a heads up, I bought multiple of the Vaux docks a while back and every one of them stopped working after a month or two. Strongly recommend steering clear of those.
@craigthom I’m buying a second one today, because my first one, also from Meh (Nov. 2018), crapped out last week. I enjoyed it while it lasted, and I can’t find a decent replacement for anything like this price, though, so I’m rolling with it.
I admit, I like and use Apple. But they’re also the only major tech company out there that not only protects your privacy, but also fights back against government intrusion and overreach. So if/when I go the home automation route, it’ll only be with Apple.
(Yeah, I know Apple’s offerings there are lagging far behind Google and Amazon.)
@haydesigner@mikeureko - I’d guess it has to do with: 1) the case now and then where they won’t break into a phone for the authorities, and 2) as a company, their primarily business model is making and selling products straight to the consumer, whereas, Google and Amazon make the bulk of their money (especially Google) by acquiring metadata to sell (mostly Google) or use to target you further as a consumer (more Amazon’s thing)
But none of that guarantees Apple cares about your privacy above profit or that it always will
or use to target you further as a consumer (more Amazon’s thing)
@brettpeirce Amazon has suggested products for my cat on multiple occasions. Except I don’t have a cat, and there’d be some serious questions if my cat plushies ever needed a litter box.
My 3rd Vaux (first one had a problem and sent a new one, 2nd was a warranty return) finally stopped working after it worked flawlessly for over a year. I think being on 24/7 has something to do with it.
I loved how I could bring it outside to bbq, work on my cars or be in the garage. Buyer beware, but at this price it’s pretty cheap
The Vaux looks a lot like the MOKCAO_POWER+ I got from meh.
Random observation: one of the photos of the Vaux shows that it has “NINETY7” stamped on it as if NINETY7 was the make or model instead of “Vaux”.
Oh I wish I had the time to find that meme on FB, but I’ll give the punch line:
1969:
“Be careful what you say on the phone, they might be listening”
2019:
“Ok wiretap, can I have a recipe for pancakes?”
I prefer to distance myself from the security state and not support a propagandic (to its warehouse employees) and sinister company like Amazon. No thanks.
Had the Vaux for the Amazon echo dot. Had a power cord issue within six months and it was useless.
They are not designed to have the power cords taken in and out. If you look at the Amazon tap ( if you can find one)…the tap and the charging base have no wires between them. Tap charges resting on the base. No removal and reinsertion of plugs…which can lead to either plug or charge port failure. Much better design.
@dupart3 Careful I heard the Echo 1st gen’s get jealous if you start looking at newer models. My 1st gen scares the heck out of me. I know it’s plotting if I even think about one of those new dots with the built-in clocks.
I bought this just to keep plugged up all the time to play my echo through. Well it charged the first time, but now it will run for about 5 minutes then cut off even though it is plugged in. Plus it goes to sleep in the middle of playing songs even though it is plugged in .

Brain sees pics and says “some kind of coffeemaker system” but description says otherwise. Meh.
@msayler beat me to it.
Was going to say the same thing.
@msayler @RogerWilco Me as well. They’re playing Jedi mind tricks on us!
@msayler Yep. I saw that as well.
Big brother is looking better every day.
My phone eavesdrops on me enough, I don’t need more of that around.
What’s the point of this? So your smart speaker works in a power outage? If you have your modem and router on a UPS, just put the echo on one.
@rmeden it’s to make the speaker portable (where there’s wifi)
@rmeden That, and the sound is better with the Amazon Dot one, since it includes a speaker and an amplifier.
But they all let you take your little friend out onto the deck, if you have a deck and your wifi reaches.

These are almost… speaker dock… docks…
My god. This world we live in is becoming more and more mad every day.
@Bandrik Yo dawg, we heard you like docks, so we put your dock in a dock so you can dock your dock while your boat docks at the dock
jeff bezos already listens to me jerk off for free. why should I pay him for it? meh. no one buy this
@boygenius1991 the world (of wankers) is his oyster…
Just as a heads up, I bought multiple of the Vaux docks a while back and every one of them stopped working after a month or two. Strongly recommend steering clear of those.
@Defenestrator27 Probably knockoffs; a faux Vaux.
@Defenestrator27 Same story here. Except mine was a gift for the FIL.
I got neither. You win this time.
Or mah wallet.
I bought one of the Vaux things a year ago (not this cheap) and it’s still working great.
@craigthom I’m buying a second one today, because my first one, also from Meh (Nov. 2018), crapped out last week. I enjoyed it while it lasted, and I can’t find a decent replacement for anything like this price, though, so I’m rolling with it.
FINALLY! The blade-running, botnetted, anti-privacy, (surveillance) state-endorsed, dystopian technocracy-of-the-future accessory kit I’ve always wanted! Thanks meh!

@haydesigner What makes you think they protect your privacy?
@haydesigner @mikeureko - I’d guess it has to do with: 1) the case now and then where they won’t break into a phone for the authorities, and 2) as a company, their primarily business model is making and selling products straight to the consumer, whereas, Google and Amazon make the bulk of their money (especially Google) by acquiring metadata to sell (mostly Google) or use to target you further as a consumer (more Amazon’s thing)

@haydesigner it’s adorable that you believe this
The Warranty section threw me off for a moment.
Ewww

No use for these eavesdropping accessories BUT did enjoy the very loose interpretation of Tom Servo and Crow. To my eyes at 2:20am anyway.
Accessories for my wire taps? Will any of these bleep out words and phrases a person could say like, “shoot,” “blow up,” or “Nickelback?”
@ocifersven Alexa farts on command
Sure, why not make my mini mobile. Have to justify my VMP payments somehow.
The Vaux looks a lot like the MOKCAO_POWER+ I got from meh.
Random observation: one of the photos of the Vaux shows that it has “NINETY7” stamped on it as if NINETY7 was the make or model instead of “Vaux”.
@GLaDOS NINETY7 is the maker. I should have known that from the Amazon link. I am up way too late…
@GLaDOS I suspect but have no proof that the innards of all similar gen 2 Dot battery/speaker things are the same; only the case, if that, varies.
I’ve got two of another brand, and, other than being round instead of squarish, they seem to be pretty much the same.
i have two minis and a home. If the minis and home are within wi fi rage they are within shouting distance and a plug…these make no sense.
@fastharrydotcom I can understand how the shouting goes along with the rage.

@IWUJackson @narfcake This made me smile.
@narfcake Thanks for bailing me out!

In for the Vaux. Now I can bring the CIA with me everywhere!

So what’s the word on the school dot ones? Yay or nay?

god damn it. This would have been an instant purchase if it worked with Echo first gen Those are fabulous bluetooth speakers and get decently loud.

I have read through all the specs and I still don’t know what you are selling today! WTF!?

Cancel this order, I bought 2 on another order and don’t need 3. Thanks!
@moeverette Replying in the forum isn’t going to get your order cancelled.
You can cancel the order yourself from your orders page:

@pwofford i hope you’re taking advantage of the warranty before your 90 days are up.
Love this! Great sound…
