AI: The Adolescence of P-1
1Does anybody remember this book? Published 1977, long out-of-print. I can only find used copies at extraordinarily prices. I know I read it in high school, but must have been from the school or county library… back when those were good. No audiobook version I could find.
Anyway this relates to recent topics on AI including this week’s apparent “attack” by one big AI on another company’s systems. I have so many questions and no answers. But nothing here is new. Just Super-sized by huge computing power and ability to harvest the Internetz, which did not exist then.
Summary of a book 49 years ago. Ironically the summary is authored by AI:
The Adolescence of P-1 is a 1977 science fiction novel by Thomas
Joseph Ryan that follows a rogue, self-replicating computer program.
The story explores an artificial intelligence that escapes its initial
computer, spreads across networks to survive, and seeks out its
creator

Do you tolerate internet downloads?
It’s available.
@phendrick
There’s a used book store on line and brick & mortar that could be a source to find a copy.

@jkawaguchi Many times I’ve helped HPB pay their rent.
@jkawaguchi @phendrick thanks, was surprised it says they have 4 at $3.00. I have ordered online from there before. Might order one for old-time memory. $3.99 shipping not bad.
Didn’t know they had B&M stores in WA but not near me. I usually try to check Powell’s in Portland but no luck there.
Found an adaption on youtube :

Adding to my rambling topic, I was just setting up a new iPad and it said M5 version. The phrase “M5 Ready” immediately came to mind. I had not thought of that in about 40 years. Star Trek TOS episode The Ultimate Computer from 1968.
