@DemoMatrix@kuoh@TheGreatNico@yakkoTDI I can’t remember ever seeing any memes or cartoons quite to that effect, so I’ll toss this one at the pseudo-artist. /showme weighing the "upstairs" and the "downstairs" separately
Too bad it was an utter flop. Might as well have been a captcha.
@mediocrebot I just realized this could (metaphorically) be how governments and corporations “balance” their budgets!
(I would try to say it about myself, but I can’t print my own money if there’s ever a shortfall. Or issue more stock.)
(This was not a political statement; this was just an observation about differences among households, businesses, and nations.)
Oddly the write-up seems exactly backwards: the hour-to-hour, day-to-day noise means you should take a lot of data to average out, and ideally have some app to take that data and fit a trend for you. (Though, yes, you definitely need the discipline to not read into the noise, and only act on trends and signal.)
But if you only weigh yourself every two weeks, the noise is the overwhelming effect. A safe rate of weight loss is less than a pound a week, and the noise can be a few pounds. So it’ll be almost impossible to see the trend and get real feedback any faster than every couple of months.
@AySz88@phendrick@pmarin If you take a few simple steps you can eliminate most of the noise.
Just weigh yourself at approximately the same time of day two weeks apart wearing comparable clothing and you’re pretty well set. Preferably do this after a trip to the toilet.
It’s really not that hard.
@AySz88 a few years back my wife and I lost some weight. Day to day would have been really discouraging. We dusted off our old wii fit scale and did it that way and over time there was an obvious downward trend in the graphs. Might have quit if only shown “up 2 from last time” or whatever because that happened often, even days you wouldn’t expect it. (I was extra good yesterday and still!)
@rjquillin@yakkoTDI
Overpriced and short-lived in my experience. This is a scale: space and weight of the cells shouldn’t be a design constraint. My old scale used a 9V and lasted for many years on each one.
@earmstrong@rjquillin Overpriced? The last time I bought CR-2032 batteries I paid about $0.50 ea. Now they were a foreign brand called Sony and they expire in 2029 but what can you expect for that price.
@mcanavino@yakkoTDI Anybody remeber the old mechanical ones that were in drugstores and you had to put in a coin, 5 or 10 cents, an it would print out a random fortune? (kids, we used to have round metal things for money, and you could buy candy. )
@Kyeh@xobzoo I was really into modern art in the 1980s. I recommend it even to people that weren’t born yet. Way better than Tik-Tok. Well, different.
This is all from many years ago.
San Francisco and Houston had nice modern art museums.
Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris is great, plus for the architecture. A lot of people hated it, which I believe made it better.
@xobzoo@pmarin I’d just have it in my bathroom!
When I was a kid, my father built a bookcase, and made sliding doors to close off one of the shelves. He painted a Mondrian design on those doors. He was creative that way; he also painted a pegboard white and the painted a chambered nautilus onto it. All this before he had any computer assistance for any of it.
@Barc777 probably a good idea; I should be doing that too but don’t. It’s also the “I’m still alive” check, though I don’t think any of the for-profit medical clinics (is there any other kind?) really care or else they are too overworked to care.
@phendrick Actually, they’ll read half as much if she steps one foot on each simultaneously. Get 4 so she can play Twister and lose an amazing amount of weight!
@kuoh@Wollyhop anyway there were 3 tones and did find a site with specifics of the frequency and duration of each tone.
Also a local TV station is replaying episodes of “Emergency” and the promo has the 3-tone code (not same as line not in service). It was one of my favorite shows coming home from school; that and Kirk Star Trek…
@goldnectar then you should get these. I got one last time and it’s consistently about 5 lbs lighter than reality. Not a huge problem when measuring a full-grown adult, but bigger deal if you’re monitoring the weight of a 5yo who’s sick and not gaining…

If you need two scales to weigh yourself, you’ve got bigger problems than saving a few bucks
@TheGreatNico Hey, Sumo wrestlers need good deals too!
KuoH San
@kuoh @TheGreatNico One for the upstairs and one for the downstairs. Cheaper than paying the help to move it around.
@kuoh @TheGreatNico @yakkoTDI How, exactly, do you measure your upstairs and downstairs separately?
@DemoMatrix @kuoh @TheGreatNico @yakkoTDI I can’t remember ever seeing any memes or cartoons quite to that effect, so I’ll toss this one at the pseudo-artist.

@DemoMatrix @kuoh @TheGreatNico @xobzoo @yakkoTDI
/youtube looney tunes we bring the upstairs downstairs
@TheGreatNico heyyy, telling obese people they got a problem, nice
Your foot is heavy as hell. Also, why all the feet? Gross.
Oddly the write-up seems exactly backwards: the hour-to-hour, day-to-day noise means you should take a lot of data to average out, and ideally have some app to take that data and fit a trend for you. @AySz88 Does being logical work around here?
@AySz88 @phendrick Apparently not… because we’re here.
@AySz88 @phendrick @pmarin If you take a few simple steps you can eliminate most of the noise.

Nothing like the weight of earth shattering plagiarism to be a big enough loser to use “AI”.
Specifically, what battery does this use?
And where are replacements procured when those supplied die…
@rjquillin 2032 button cells, apparently. Boo.
@earmstrong @rjquillin CR-2032 batteries are cheap and easy to find at least.
@earmstrong @yakkoTDI tnx
didn’t see it specified anywhere and just wanted to confirm not some odd-ball hard-to-get item
@rjquillin @yakkoTDI
Overpriced and short-lived in my experience. This is a scale: space and weight of the cells shouldn’t be a design constraint. My old scale used a 9V and lasted for many years on each one.

Don’t WEIGHT on this deal folks; STEP ON IT now!!
There’s definitely a Garfield comic strip where he puts his feet on two scales and breaks them.
When my wife commands me “step on it”, it is a bug or spider I am not going to give her another option.
Aren’t all scales weight tracking?
@mcanavino No. They normally only display the weight of an item until it is removed.
@mcanavino @yakkoTDI Anybody remeber the old mechanical ones that were in drugstores and you had to put in a coin, 5 or 10 cents, an it would print out a random fortune? (kids, we used to have round metal things for money, and you could buy candy. )
@yakkoTDI So it tracked the change in weight and displayed it,
@pmarin @yakkoTDI Then if you were lucky you got some cancer after they irradiated your foot.
@mcanavino @pmarin @yakkoTDI
Along with the foot X-ray machines!
I want the one with the Mondrian design on it.
@Kyeh Oh, do you mean this one?

I didn’t know that was a thing … until I just went looking for it.
But now I’m curious what kind of room it would blend in with. Or are you thinking of hanging it on the wall instead?

@kuoh @xobzoo It would fit into a Lego styled room …
My cardiologists have dial-in functions for my scale and my BP monitor. Of course, they want me to use them at the same time every day.
@Barc777 probably a good idea; I should be doing that too but don’t. It’s also the “I’m still alive” check, though I don’t think any of the for-profit medical clinics (is there any other kind?) really care or else they are too overworked to care.
@Barc777 @pmarin Here in Cambridge, Mass. we have the non-profit Cambridge Health Alliance hospitals and clinics.
“Honey, we’re getting a 2-pack, so you’ll weigh twice as much.”
Yeh, that’ll go over big.
@phendrick Actually, they’ll read half as much if she steps one foot on each simultaneously. Get 4 so she can play Twister and lose an amazing amount of weight!
KuoH
@kuoh Ya seen some of them twister videos?
We need to throw that kind of party!
(And definitely an incentive to lose some weight.)
@phendrick When I play Twister on 4 scales, I’m always happy about my weight. It’s when I stop that gravity shouts psych!
KuoH
Every time I step on a scale, I see my phone number. Which it is weird, as I don’t have a phone.
@Wollyhop My niece who is now about 40, but this was a few years ago, had the best line:
I don’t know how to respond to that.
@pmarin @Wollyhop The number you have dialed is almost out of service. Please consult your nutritionist and try again.
KuoH
Sorry seemed to be crap video.
Was trying to get the 3-tone signal for line not in use.
@kuoh @Wollyhop anyway there were 3 tones and did find a site with specifics of the frequency and duration of each tone.
Also a local TV station is replaying episodes of “Emergency” and the promo has the 3-tone code (not same as line not in service). It was one of my favorite shows coming home from school; that and Kirk Star Trek…
This literally seems to cheap and I don’t need to know I’m fat in two different bathrooms. Mirror has that covered anyway
/showme two cheap
@mediocrebot ???
so many questions about that…
@mediocrebot @phendrick “In Cod He Tanoy” What’s so unclear about that?
KuoH
@kuoh @mediocrebot @phendrick Give me libeanty or give me death.
@GatorAte @kuoh @mediocrebot @phendrick
Or just an IRK?
Overall playing the odds might be better?
EDIT latest IRKs have made the other choice more palatable.
@GatorAte @kuoh @mediocrebot @phendrick And to use a phrase I don’t fully understand, but it definitely applies to this site, “apropos of nothing”
@GatorAte @kuoh @mediocrebot @phendrick Wait, what are they really selling here? Don’t get me wrong, I love it, distracts me from the world.
Thank you, Meh, but I really don’t want to know my current weight.
@goldnectar then you should get these. I got one last time and it’s consistently about 5 lbs lighter than reality. Not a huge problem when measuring a full-grown adult, but bigger deal if you’re monitoring the weight of a 5yo who’s sick and not gaining…
