Your bastard TV needs love, too.

Oh, the sad plight of the unwanted TV. Off it sits in some guest room or basement, unconnected to your cable hookup or your high-tech home streaming setup. Rarely watched and never loved, its quaint first-generation HD alluring no one. Do you have any idea how it feels, night after long lonely night, to hear your family’s distant laughter mingling with the soundtrack from whatever you’re all watching together? Your bastard TV knows it’s never going to replace the bigger, smarter screens in more high-traffic rooms. It just wants to be useful somehow.

As Lifehacker suggests, this Mohu Channels doohickey might help with de-bastardization. It’s a cheap, easy TV streaming doodad that you plug into the TV’s HDMI port and connect to your WiFi or Ethernet. It runs on Android and uses Android apps. So right there you can put your Netflix, your Hulu, your Amazon Instant Video, your etc. in that guest room or basement. But there are all kinds of whatchamathingies that can do that these days. What makes this one different from Fire Stick or Chromecast aside from our ludicrously low price?

It’s got an input for an over-the-air (OTA) TV antenna (not included). Sure, your bastard TV does, too. But Mohu Channels brings OTA TV and streaming services together into a cable-style channel guide experience. You can use the Plex app to watch video files stored on your home network. And while it isn’t a DVR, you can do some rudimentary pausing and rewinding if you plug a flash drive (not included) into the USB port.

There’s only so much any device can do for that old, unwanted TV. Mohu Channels won’t quadruple its screen size or increase its resolution. But it just might make enough of a difference to bring that bastard TV back into the family. Let the healing begin. Let’s watch some TV.
