R.I.P. Five Dollar Footlongs, Most Other Forms of Joy
Once you could get a mediocre hoagie that wasn’t quite a foot long for five bucks.
We used to be a proper country, is what we’re saying.
It was a time when a crisp $5 bill could get you a mildly inadvisable amount of food from basically anywhere with a drive-through.
Oh no you didn’t just balk at that, did you? It’s almost like you’ve never ordered a dollar menu medium Coke with no ice along with a free large cup of ice, then gotten a couple of BOGO hamburgers to put alongside three small fries (which include more fries than one large fries for less money) plus a crispy chicken with lettuce and mayo that’s inexplicably $0.99. Damn, man, we used to really EAT for less money than ya’ll spend on a DoorDash tip that still gets your food dropkicked up onto the porch, eh?
cough
Anyway, five bucks used to get you some stuff, is what we’re saying. Sure, you maybe had to be a little creative to really wring all the potential out of your Abe Lincoln fiver, but even if you just waked aimlessly into a restaurant or store, you could still get something for that amount of money.
But unless you’re shopping at a dollar store where everything is now $3 or are in the market for several uncomfortably chonky cans of Arizona ice tea, you’re kind of out of luck at this price.
The point here is that today’s choice between two bags for just five bucks is unprecedented, borderline unbelievable, and definitely a flailing attempt to restore some good in the retail world before it’s too late.
Your five dollars will not be better spent today. They just won’t.
In any case, do come join us on the forum right now, where we’re having an important and nuanced discussion about the modern value of a five dollar bill.
This is important. Don’t skip the forum assignment. We want to hear from you.
Also, buy some bags, will you??
