Sit Better
Champaign, Illinois! You are the winner!
Of what, you ask?
Of MarketWatch’s cities with the shortest average commute times in the country. 13 minutes. That’s the average car commute for the residents of beautiful Champaign, which narrowly beats out the 14-minute average for second place.
Yeah, you heard that right! Eat shit, Cheyanne, Wyoming!
But let’s tease these numbers out a little bit. Let’s say you’re lucky enough to live in Champaign and your commute is that perfectly average 13 minutes. And let’s assume, just to be generous, that said 13 minutes is the total commute time. So, like, both ways. This feels unlikely, but without any statement to the contrary, we’re just going to go with it.
How does it all add up?
- Over the course of a 5-day work week, you’d be in the car: 1 hour, 5 minutes.
- Over the course of a year, commuting 5 days per week: 56 hours, 20 minutes in the car.
- Over a decade, commuting 5 days per week: about 23 and a half days behind the wheel.
This is only for commuting, mind you. It doesn’t take into consideration errands, road trips, any of that. And, again, this is using Champaign’s 13-minute average commute time, the lowest in the country, and assuming this is cumulative. Which, let’s be honest, it almost definitely is not. It’s probably 13 minutes each way. So these numbers should likely be doubled.
Our point is: that’s a lot of time sitting in an uncomfortable car seat. And we won’t even bring up your miserable desk chair.
Our point is, $25 is a nice price to pay for a little extra cushion during those long hours commuting and/or working.
So get one.
