Hammacher Schlemmer Rechargeable Mini Circular Saw or Chainsaw

Our Take

  • A wee little circular saw
  • An adorable little chainsaw
  • Choose one or the other (or place two orders to get both)
  • Can they make a margarita: No, but maybe they could (very messily) cut a lime

Not Heavy Duty

The first time we sold these, I thought, Ha! Hammacher Schlemmer? How did we get our hands on THEIR silly products?!

Well, the answer turned out to be pretty simple: we were in the process of getting our hands of Hammacher Schlemmer itself.

Funny how that works, huh?

Anyway, I wasn’t the only one amused at the time. @kodiak55 wrote:

I remember the Hammacher Schlemmer catalogs from the 80’s and 90’s. IIRC, they had a Rodeo Drive return address and were full of lots of overpriced “luxury” items, seemingly for people who don’t know what to do with all their money.

I include this comment because it’s a great plug for Gnomenclature, the newsletter from our very own Jason Toon documenting some of the highlights (or maybe lowlights) from the Hammacher catalogs throughout the ages. If you haven’t read it, take a look and subscribe.

Anyway, onto the product itself.

From that same sale, we got the following two comments.

From @TomDavidson:

I’ve got another brand’s version of the mini chainsaw and I have to say that I use it a LOT for quick pruning. It’s considerably faster than a pruning saw (and less physically onerous) and capable of deeper cuts than large clippers.

And from @user73930182:

I got the saw/grinder and it was what I was expecting. Not a heavy-duty tool, light and easy to work with, and worth the price if I can get around six jobs done with it.

The gist? These aren’t super intense. If you’ve got a major tree trimming job, you might need something bigger. Or better yet, you should hire a professional. It can be expensive, but so can the hospital bills and/or property damage leveled when you misjudge an angle and drop a huge branch where no one’s expecting it.

But it seems like these would be just fine for some pruning and…

uhh…

other small jobs like… uhh…

Look, I’m just not a very handy person, okay? So why don’t you tell me how you’d use these in the comments? That way, ~I can use your comments to assemble a write-up next time we sell these~ others can make an informed purchasing decision!
