But it’s not only the State … County and City take their pound of flesh too. 10.25% here in LALA Land (both City & County greed), and 7.75% next county over.

@DickL @robson Misery is 4% by statute. The other 6% are county taxes. City taxes are insignificant in relation (15 mils or so, I think). So 10% overall.

The county taxes are a laundry list of special interests to basic services to the population - ranging from retirement funds for workers at state-run homes for the deaf, to funding basic services like libraries and fire, police, and rescue services.

That’s why tax giveaways in TIFFs do double harm to the communities that predatory economic extraction businesses demand before pretending to “invest” in them. I’m looking at you, Walmart, who routinely testilies that their new store would fail “but for” that TIFF (sales tax giveaway that never pays for itself within our lifetimes - local elections matter - grift exists at all levels of government).

@platojello How… how would it pay for itself? The only thing you can compare it to is letting it lapse at the end of each subscription month. And there’s no way paying continuously is less than paying only when you need it.

Or those are very expensive socks. (They haven’t done a VMP thing in a while other than a few mehrathon exclusives, right?)

Though now with this whole “save a dollar if you keep it continuously” blows up my calculation. I think if you can not buy for about 8-9 weeks between all of your months of non-consecutive subscriptions it’s still better to sign up/let lapse/sign up again.

@platojello @stinks They’ve never done a goddamn thing for me as a VMP. In fact, they have taken things away: the VMP hour on mehrathons. I have never, ever, received a perk or random gift. 5 fucking years. The fact I buy wine is the only reason I keep it, despite any random being able to pay (oooooh, not $1 more) for free shipping.

Morningsave is meh leftovers with a price that negates the discount. I swear my pastadrop was specifically a FU (seriously, random new signees got entire warehouses worth, I got the minimum)

@retired44 They are raising the fee from 5 to 6 a month. You don’t have to do anything. If for some reason you quit or your credit card changes and they cannot bill the 5, you will pay the 6 the next time they bill you.

If you want to keep saving 12¢ per year, you have to keep your 3rd-tier mehmbership (1st is K, 2 is VMP, 3 is mehmbership) from here on, just like VMPs.

So you can’t stop and start with impunity like you can now. If you do, you’ll be paying $11.88 more per year than VMPs and $12/yr more than the “ye olde mehmbership” crowd.

@caramelarrow Your state is probably taxing online purchases. Probably because the billing is from Meh.com and the category code is online merchant and Meh doesn’t have a separate merchant code setup just for memberships/services (which are not taxed).

@caramelarrow @mike808 My understanding is that Mediocre was officially notified by several state taxing authorities that the nature of their “membership” did not meet the requirements for a non-taxable transaction, and Mediocre has had to change the status to Taxable as the notices come in from the relevant states. Only members in the states that have notified Mediocre are impacted.

@caramelarrow @mike808 @werehatrack I also got charged tax this month but it was WAY MORE than my local tax rate!! I live in the Columbus, OH area and my tax rate is 7.5%. However, I was charged 72-cents tax when it should have only been 37-cents!! What gives??

@IndifferentDude @werehatrack Hmm they can’t add in my case. Looking at IRKS I am charged $5.35 so one would hope that is correct and I am not going to get back charged a ton for sales tax on those $5 items (well back when they were $5) and I was charged 80 cents so they still owe me a dime. LOL

@IndifferentDude @werehatrack And actually in my case that 7.75% (so 40 cents a month) is state and local. Looking at my past $5 irks I was only taxed the state rate of 7% so $5.35 for those. Something stinks in Denmark Mississippi.

Here it turns out it is 8% sales tax. State income tax starts at 3% for $2000-4999 (after deductible of $2300 - if single), 4% for $5000-$9999 it’s 4%, and %5 for $10K+. So you are paying state income taxes (if single) once you reach $4300 gross/year or $338/mo. The poverty line is $13,590 gross for someone who is single. That is $129 in state income tax when you are living at 30.9% of the the poverty line. That makes sense.

Being that poor gets you $234/mo in snap (full amount is $250). To get full snap you can’t earn more than $275/mo ($3300/year). If you earn $1000/mo you only get $63/mo in snap.

Yup this state wants to kill the people living below the poverty line while making them pay state income tax.

Yes, I know the state said tax here is “supplemented” by localities like Culver City and Santa Monica. Most of LA county is 9.5%.
