I recently got a new one and need to case it. That said I traveled with it and transported it around multiple cities in it's box and plastic out of sheer paranoia of breaking it.
Apparently I'm crazy for never seeing the need to case my devices. Then again a friend said that might change if/when I have kids, which is a long ways off anyway.
I thought Apple devices were all about aesthetics and beauty and grace. I'm not going to buy a car and then buy a case for it. Oh... wait... the iPad belongs to work and they gave me a case. I wonder what I did with that case.

Nokias don't need cases.
I dropped an old nokia on my floor yesterday. The contractor said it will cost about 5 grand for repairs.
My Nokia was run over by a car and still worked fine. My brothers blackberry went for a swim in the ocean, and still works!
A friend dropped a Nokia 5120 (yes, I'm old. Stuff it) while riding a motorbike on a highway. Replaced cover panel ($5), good as new.
Once you drop an iPad and it breaks, you learn to case it.
Once you drop an iPad, you learn that you're the sort of person who needs a case.
Mine was in a case. My kid left it on the floor and I stepped on it in the middle of the night. :(

if you're going to step on your kid, probably get it a helmet or something. your kid can't fit in that case.
Just buy a bunch of cases and tape them to the kid.
Once you intentionally purchase an Apple product, you're beyond the help of a simple case.
There is a direct corollary between lack of iPad case and increase in insurance fraud.
