@Tin_Foil yup. I hate to sound like a geezer on this one, but I survived nearly 30 years of adulthood without a phone. The notion that going without one for a few hours is some sort of emergency is laughable.
Depending on the situation and who I am out with, I might have even purposefully left it at home.
@rtjhnstn Yup, and this is why a high-quality (Anker, etc) super-fast-charger-for-your-particular-phone is the best for having in the car. These aren’t the cheapest (cost $20ish on sale) but the regular (much less the cheapie) ones just take too long for emergency charging. My current phone can be charged at up to 18w through USB-PD3, so I got a car charger that delivers that max (not even the included wall charger goes that high!). This takes it from 10% to 70% in under 20 minutes. I don’t like charging this fast all of the time because it’s not the best for battery life, so for regular use, there’s a setting in the phone where you can set it to slow charge even if the charger is a quick charger.
I get all of my income through my phone, so, as much as I’d love to be without it… gotta pay the bills! I don’t do social media though, so oddly enough, I still use it a small fraction of what seems to be the norm.
@jester747@rtjhnstn Me too. Upgrading my car charger to a QC 3.0 enabled one definitely improved my quality of life. I too make my living via my phone, but in truth it’s playing Harry Potter Wizards Unite that drains my battery like crazy. But I’m having fun with it for now, so I’ve learned to deal.
@tweezak Your phone is old enough to where replacing the battery is still fairly doable (before Apple really started packing iPhone components in like sardines). Check out https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+Replace+Your+iPhone+6+Battery/29363 for instructions, as well as a new battery and all the tools you’ll need together in a kit for just $30.
@lljk Thanks for the info. The problem is really that Apple designed this phone with a really lousy battery. I’ve had it replaced once with a brand new one and saw no improvement in battery life. I’m lucky to make it 12 hours before it shuts down with little-no use. Apple tried to cover up the issue by throttling the phones to a nearly unusable state but eventually had to come clean and admit they screwed the pooch. That was when they started offering the $29 battery replacement.
Save the power it has left for an emergency and enjoy the rest of your outing without it. Come on, we have become too addicted to these things, it’s irrational. It’s like life ceases to exist if we don’t text or look at dumb pictures others post on their social media, people we don’t even care about.
Where’s the relief option? A dead phone gives you a legitimate excuse when everyone starts calling Hospitals and your emergency contact numbers because you didn’t pick up for once. Anyone old enough to miss the 80s and 90s when one missed phone call simply meant Timmy can’t play today?
not so much a story but just here to say that if my phone runs low while i’m out i’ll use the charging cable in the car. i have an iphone SE and unless i have snapchat open or google maps running navigation the battery will last me the better part of two days. i think maybe once i ended up staying over a friend’s house after a party and she had to use her phone to call me an uber the next afternoon but…that’s about it. don’t generally leave the house for very long so not a big issue for me.
Oh well. Guess I won’t have a phone for a while?

@DrWorm @Tin_Foil Thank you! I go without a phone on occasion.
There’s a simple solution. I just
Sorry for the delay. My phone died and I just found a charger.
Charge it in my car while I’m driving to my destination.

Just go to low power mode at ~20%, should be fine.
What is “Out”?
And the problem is what?
I just wish my phone was an inch thick of mostly battery that could keep it running for a week straight.
Phone’s dead, problem has been solved!
I have an iPhone 6 so this is a feature.
@tweezak
I have an SE so it is doubly a feature, especially if it is warm or cool outside.

@DianneLK It IS irrational! But I still get upset when my phone is dying even if I’m home.
I think, therefore I am, has been replaced with, iPhone, therefore I matter.
Sounded funnier in my head, than reading it. Thank you, day job!
@JnKL No, it’s I Tweet, therefore I matter.

@f00l
Woah.
Patrick Stewart doing Shakespeare does not give me a headache.
Turn it off, charge when I get home. Go about life normally.
I’d be much more concerned if I’m dying and my phone’s out.
Dammit ump… I thought I was safe…

Not good. This is a problem
theme song for today…
Never fear! I have a tablet with 4G!
But I would probably just shut them both off…
The computer is where my mind is, but the phone is the ancillary mind. Plus navigation and any planning of calendars and so forth.
My phone never runs out of battery. I see to it.

Oh, well!
Still the best excuse for ignoring everyone without seeming anti-social.
No option for “So what?”
