Reminder to all the other NYers on here: the state runs the subways, which is why they suck.
i don’t commute, but when i did and it was by public transport, there wasn’t room to do any of this stuff most of the time, esp on a sox night. you just hoped you could stand somewhere where you could hang onto something and tried not to look at anyone. the best was if you could get on early enough and get to the back where you could sit on the stairs facing away from everyone and kind of had a built in bubble. (this would be an entrance/exit when the train traveled back in the other direction.)
that was the T though and also before i even had a smartphone. the commuter rail sometimes wasn’t as bad and i would do the crossword in the free paper. nowadays i’d probably play a word game on my phone or read a graphic novel.
I sometimes take a train into LA from Long Beach to avoid having to find a place to park. Usually to go to the Hollywood Bowl. And we end up dealing with the commuter crowd on weekdays. I just look at the people, endlessly interesting. And yes, that train goes through Watts and Compton.
The people watching just got interesting. Waiting for the train to fill up and some girl just ran off to puke in a trash can. At least it wasn’t on the train, forcing us to smell it for the next 30 minutes.
Talk to millennials. It’s hilarious! They have no idea what’s happening.

@daveinwarsh I did once in Mexico. We thought it would be cheaper to take the bus from the resort area to an attraction downtown. That was weird.
Find someone else with piercings and alt hair and sit next to them saying nothing but telling myself I will.

Read ads on the train/bus/subway. Casper mattress ones are my favorite.

Living near DC and using the metro regularly I tend to people watch often. Many times it’s better than the people of Walmart.
