@medz I still use my orange one all the time - it’s a light, durable, and extraordinarily stylish way to carry the family’s water bottles, ponchos and other such needful things at theme parks and other vacation destinations.
I have a 20 year old jansport backpack. It’s pink and has some stars drawn on it in red sharpie. Outside of backpacking, I’ve never need anything else.
@SluggerOtoole I’m Still using a Black Jansport I got for Christmas my Freshman year of High School. - I graduated 20 years ago this coming May
and the only part any worse for the wear is a hole i accidentally put in it that first year, cutting some mesh webbing off…
Not me I have a Northface Jester I picked up in Spain (because I needed a last minute backpack) and it’s been the best backpack so far. I did have a Jack Bauer-esque Rothco messenger bag I used for a while. Eventually the material holding the strap started to tear (too many school books) but for years it was a solid bag.
My wife bought me a Timbuk2 for Christmas. It was the best present ever, not only because I was starting a new job where I’d had to commute on a bus for 3 years, but also because I didn’t have to think about it anymore. (And yet, I still debated swapping it out- I actually went to the Timbuk2 store in NYC to confirm I had the perfect bag.)
My old backpack has almost finished shedding its inner rubbery lining in places, and the size of the hole in the outer layer of nylon seems to have stabilized. I should be set for a while now.
I saw that comic and thought of the same thing. Then I noticed Randal would consider a mesanger bag and was surprised he of all people has not realized that the backpack is the superior form of bag!
Saw one of these in the wild the other day.

@medz The main zipper blew out on mine last year, I keep meaning to mend it but haven’t yet. Great little backpack.

@earlyre Yes - class of '98!
My high school backpack was not remotely prepared for hauling college textbooks.

I have the special Alienware M18X laptop backpack because it’s the only backpack on the planet I can fit my laptop in.

@wishlish That’s a long commute.

Blame time zones.
